My dash doing this made me happy. (The one by me was queued, so I’m counting that as serendipity even though it was my own reblog.)

clavisa: I have done the research!  How (I imagine) Hillary…

clavisa:

I have done the research!

How (I imagine) Hillary Clinton became a fan of the Lizzie Bennet Diaries

May 2012

Hillary Rodham Clinton knew that she was sometimes compared to fictional female nerds. Hermione Granger (the books were a bit too young for Chelsea, but she’d read them anyway), Leslie Knope (her staffers had shown her a few episodes of that show), Tracy Flick (she’d met Reese Witherspoon shortly after it came out).

In fact, she was rather tickled by it.

But the young woman in the animated gif that her intern (Laura, 23, liked Jane Austen novels) had attached to the email wasn’t Emma Watson or Amy Poehler. In fact, she looked far more ordinary – a redhead sitting in a bedroom, looking into the camera, waving a stack of papers and apparently saying “I have done the research”.

Hillary chuckled appreciatively, “If there’s one thing you can say about me, I have indeed done the research.” But perhaps this was a real person, and maybe her research should be turned into policy.

She angled her screen towards her chief assistant (Melanie, 36, grew up in Kansas, just had a baby). “Do you know who’s in this picture?“

Melanie wasn’t sure.

“Make a note to find out what her research is about.”

“Yep,” Melanie scribbled on a notepad, like she’d done 19 times already that day.

Hillary returned to her inbox, and that was that. For now.

whynotshesaid-deactivated201311:

“My favorite story out of this is Malia, when she was 4, she had a little dance thing. Well, Michelle was gone that weekend so I’m taking her to ballet. And I get her in her little leotard and her little stuff. I did her hair, put it in a little bun.

We get to the dance studio and one of the mothers there right away comes up to Malia – she thinks she’s out of earshot of me and she says, ‘Sweetie, do you want me to redo your hair?’ And Malia who she’s 4 says, ‘Yes please, this is a disaster’. You know, she didn’t want to hurt daddy’s feelings.”

lies:

Heh. Pretty, but wrong. If I were there I’d have to redo it.

I’m sorry. I just can’t leave it like that.

First off, you need to have the right geometry. Spring lines keep the boat from surging fore and aft. Breast lines (which are the ones going at a mostly right angle from boat to dock) keep the boat from moving in and out:

image

That labeling is a little wacky, but whatevs. Onward.

There’s no reason to have a tangled mass of spaghetti at the cleat. Yes, extra hitches add a certain feeling of security, but you don’t need them if you know what you’re doing.

Unlike this person:

image

No.

image

No!

image

Nee! Nooit!

Sigh. Look. You want to start with a straight turn around the back of the cleat, then wrap up around the opposite horn so you have a way to pull up to take the strain while easing out, or to tighten up after you’ve pulled in some slack on the standing part of the line. After that straight turn, you cross over the center of the cleat, around the opposite horn, then twist a loop into the line for the hitch to lock it. But unlike the image above, the exiting free end of the locking hitch should lie parallel to the previous crossover, not across it.

image

Ooh; so close. The only problem here is that the standing part coming in from the boat should have gone around the far horn first, not the near horn. That gives better control when doing that easing-out-and-taking-in maneuver I described above, and makes it harder for the line to slip off the cleat or jam the turns applied later.

Like this:

Yes.

Ooh, yesss.

Nice.

That’s what I’m talking about.

Mm hmm.

Thank you for your time.

Dude I Married is sitting in the dark in the nursery, baby GreyFox snoozing in his arms, white noise going, rocking, checking his tumblr. And now he has his highball.

We are, like, the best worst parents ever.
