pastel-and-proud:

This rant is brought to you by Poe Party and who is honestly surprised by that.

Listen, I fucking love this web series and here is why.

As an amateur writer, I get discouraged like all the time, literally every second because either I’m not writing often enough, my ideas are crap, I’ll never be a good writer, etc. etc. and whatever else my anxiety can concoct.

But when I remember how weird all the classic authors are? Like, when I remember how Emily Dickinson literally almost never left her house, how Ernest Hemingway was probably a sex addict and was definitely an alcoholic and how Edgar Allen Poe suffered from a crazy severe depression and how George Eliot was always running from herself, I feel better about what I can accomplish. Because hey, these flawed people made it– why not me? And seeing them portrayed on a medium like YouTube so well and with such light humor takes away that worry that I’ll never amount to anything and fade into oblivion after I die.

Now, when my anxiety is like hey you suck, my brain is like yeah they said that about Oscar Wilde too and look where he is, he’s being played by an incredible actor on an amazing web series that I hold very dear to my heart so HA to you anxiety, also leave me alone please and thank you.

Also, it combines my two very favorite things which are literature and history so that’s a plus.

Also it’s a pretty great community that I can feel like I belong to, so that’s also nice.

Moral of the story, thank you Poe Party for helping me combat my anxiety and fear of oblivion, I really appreciate it.

shipwreckedcomedy:

Announcing Edgar Allan Poe’s Murder Mystery Fanart Contest!

Hungry dinner party attendees! We are hereby hosting a fanart contest as a part of our Poe Party campaign. Draw your favorite author that’s been revealed, what you think might be going down at the party, your own version of the logo–whatever your creative brain desires!

The Shipwrecked team will be judging the entries based on how well they capture the essence of the Poe Party, not on artistic merit, so artists of all skill levels may apply!

Be sure and include the kickstarter link in your post and tag it #poeparty to be eligible for consideration. Entries are due Friday, February 19th at midnight PST, and a winner will be chosen by the following Monday. The winner will receive a signed character poster of their choice from the campaign!

Happy drawing, and be sure to bring your appetite…for murder!

Miss Giddy and all that follows after

Can we talk about Miss Giddy for a minute? Yeah, Miss Giddy. The elderly woman who takes care of Angharad and Cheedo and Capable and Toast and the Dag. Can we talk about Miss Giddy telling them about what life was like in the Old Days? Can we talk about Miss Giddy with tiny script tattoos all over her body? Can we talk about Miss Giddy taking care of Angharad and Cheedo and Capable and Toast and the Dag and knowing what’s happening to them, what’s being done to them? Can we talk about Miss Giddy being aware of the wretchedness of the hypermasculine world they’re trapped in? Can we talk about Miss Giddy being complict in the escape plan–or, really, straight-up being an accomplice in the escape plan? Can we talk about how all that went down with her involved–gladly involved? Can we talk about fucking badass Miss Giddy standing there in that elegant prison with a double-barrel shotgun loaded and ready and totally knowing that eventually Joe’s gonna put it  all together and burst in there in a rage? Can we talk about Miss Giddy knowing that she would have to face him down in that moment? Can we talk about Miss Giddy knowing that she would be the first to confront him after the escape? Can we talk about Miss Giddy being fully fucking ready to blow his head off with said shotgun because she’s got her own share of rage? Can we talk about her confronting him head on? Can we talk about Miss Giddy telling him to his face (relatively speaking) that “They are not your property!” Can we talk about how she put herself in danger so they could escape and stood up to the Big Bad with her shotgun and her sheer nerve and nearly got him? Can we talk about Miss Giddy? Can wE TALK ABOUT MISS GIDDY???
