Why it’s actually not funny that you edited Wikipedia to say some droll thing and screenshot it before it was reverted

Monday, February 29th, 2016

Because Wikipedia is a useful tool created by volunteers as an act of generosity, and by vandalizing it (which is what you did), you made them spend their energy not on making it better, but on merely restoring it to what it was before.

That’s a dick move.

Hi. It’s been a while.

It’s my birthday. My real birthday. It comes only every 4 years and when I was little it meant so much more to me – but today, in the best way, has been ordinary.

I woke up to sun through my window. It’s been pouring on and off for weeks and then the past week and a half – nothing but sun.

I thought she looked very much what a good costume designer should look like–interesting and able to walk comfortably, thankyouverymuch.

It seemed so fitting to me, she went as a dressed up version of herself. And she’s someone who has been responsible for designing some the frockiest frock movies in history. But she looks at the conventional “you just need to find the right dress and you will be stunning sweetheart!” and knows that it’s bullshit because it’s her actual profession.

May your self assuredness inspire others Jenny Beavan!

If you doubt that this is exactly what a costume designer should express through her clothes, than please take a look at Ms. Edith Head, the most decorated costume designer in Academy Awards history.  (And yes, by the standards of her era, Ms. Head’s clothing is remarkably utilitarian, and she wore her trademark hair and glasses exactly the same while accepting her Oscars.)

Zero fucks given.

Bless them both and all none of their fucks!

They rule the clothes. The clothes do not rule them

She never looked back, darlings. It would have distracted from the now.

Mad Max: Fury Road’s film editor, Margaret Sixel, is director George Miller’s wife. When she asked her husband why he thought she should do it as she had never edited an action film before, Miller replied, “Because if a guy did it, it would look like every other action movie” (x).

CONGRATULATIONS MARGARET SIXEL!

Western Gull
Avalon, Santa Catalina Island, CA
June 14, 2013
Taken with a Canon PowerShot SX50 HS

Interesting how the lighting makes the mantle (the dark grey feathers on the back and the top of the wings) look lighter than you’d expect for a Western. But the rest of the characteristics are there: droopy “skirt”, heavy beak with pronounced gonydeal swelling, pink legs…

Gulls are hard, but fun.

We went to the Bisti Badlands on Thanksgiving, and saw this amazing hawk’s nest… but no hawks.

You can read about the nests here (p. 11), and about the Bisti/De-Na-Zin Wilderness here.  Thanks to inlandwest for the picture of me taking a picture of the nest.

Sunday, February 28th, 2016

*White privilege among liberals* is when white, especially male, democrats are ok with Trump being the Republican nominee (or even the next president) so that democrats can benefit in the long term and use that to regain seats in congress/legislatures. Here’s a reality check for ya: every extra day that Trump stays in the race, racial minorities, women, immigrants, and all other groups he’s attacked, have to be more scared for their *physical* & *psychological* safety. You don’t understand how mentally exhausting it is for us to turn the tv on *every day* and be confronted with his hateful, racist rhetoric and wonder if our family is going to be the next victim of the hate crimes he’s inspiring among extremist white nationalist in this country.*

If you’re gonna call yourself a democrat/progressive, then you better act like one and not choose long term electoral advantage over the livelihood of minorities.

Sunday, February 28th, 2016

“Predictably, several men rushed in to inform me that it was “just a joke.” Yes. I am aware. It’s the kind of “joke” told by people who think rape is funny, who think rape is a punchline for them to wield for sport, who think the threat of sexual violence is a fitting punishment for mouthy women. It’s not a joke that skewers the atrocity of rape. It’s not a joke that somehow exists in a contextless vacuum, unrelated to the climate of dull, throbbing fear that circumscribes women’s lives. In fact, this “joke” is entirely dependent on the weight of the word “rape” and the sick flutter it stirs up in women’s chests. It says, “Quiet, sex thing.” It says, “Your humanity is illusory, it is conditional, it is ours to mete out as we please, and we can take it away if you don’t behave.” It’s the kind of joke told by rapists.”

Twitter doesn’t think these rape and death threats are harassment

bananasliketoparty: The very last movie review for this award…

Sunday, February 28th, 2016

bananasliketoparty:

The very last movie review for this award season! Which also means that I have seen all the best picture nominees! How exciting.

(via https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6bF4boKL3LM)

I liked your review a lot! I also watched Room by myself for exactly the reason you cite, and it had exactly the same result. :-)

You mention feeling like you knew of Brie Larson from somewhere, but sounded unsure of where you’d seen her, or at least like you hadn’t seen her previous movies. And obv. you’re aware at this point, but just for the benefit of anyone else who might be interested, here are my favorite things of hers that I’ve seen:

She’s Envy Adams in Scott Pilgrim (which I didn’t realize for a long time, despite having seen Scott Pilgrim more than once, because I didn’t know who she was yet when I saw it, and her character is kind of deliciously awful such that I’d never bothered to learn more about who played her).

The first time I really noticed her was her portrayal of Jon’s sister Monica Martello in Don Jon. Despite her appearance in the movie being so brief, and being defined so much by one low-key attribute, she creates an amazing character. This gifset pretty much shows the entire performance.

Because a couple of people I follow on Tumblr recommended it I watched her in Short Term 12, and she was great in it. Lenny Abrahamson has said it was seeing her performance in that film that convinced him she’d be right for Room. Since you liked Room so much I think it’s a safe bet you’ll like it too.
