OKAY SO when I watched Fury Road (the first time) I thought it was strange how eloquently the Wives talked, but then when I watched it the second (and third) time I noticed that their prison room was filled with books – they’re the only educated, well read people in the world of Mad Max. So then I…had some feelings and made a little comic!

wow this is amazing and so much better than the Vertigo prequel comic. PERFECTION.

This is EXACTLY the kind of prequel content I most dearly desire!

YES PLEASE MORE OF THIS

Something I found rather cool about that is how historically accurate it is.

Shout out to the War Boy in skinny pants who saved Morsov.

So, I interpreted this as Morsov saving the lancer on the bike. That is, that Morsov is the one swinging out on the swing-y thing to pluck that guy up just before the Buzzard vehicle plows through them.

I’ve been assuming that Morsov’s post is the turret atop the fuel pod, such that every time the person in that position does something it’s Morsov. So for example, it was Morsov who was the first to notice and call the crew’s attention to the flares being fired from the war party leaving the Citadel.

But maybe I’ve been wrong all this time, and Morsov actually was on the back of the motorcycle until this other guy swung out and rescued him.

Clearly an excuse for another re-watch. :-)

Lifted up

No, no, but look. The War Pups are clearly accustomed to being picked up. You don’t just hold your arms out like that all casually unless you KNOW you’re going to get picked up. They’re USED to it by now, used to just holding out their arms and being held by the nearest War Boy.

So clearly the War Boys are capable of the kind of gentleness and emotional warmth that makes them totally cool with picking up small children, and these War Pups are raised with some semblance of emotional tenderness, and then Joe just FUCKS IT ALL UP WITH HIS BRAINWASHING (sobs)

THE MARTIAN – Ares 3: Farewell
– introducing the crew

I’m getting cautiously optimistic. I re-read the book after seeing the trailer, and I know a trailer can be cut to craft any impression you want, but the trailer sure sticks close to the book. And this “viral” trailer, which I hadn’t seen until now, again seems consistent.

The most exciting thing about The Martian for me was how it embraced the values of the “hard” sf Andy Weir (and I) grew up with. I know there are problematic things about that genre. But its rules are baked into my story-processing apparatus at a pretty deep level. If you’re going to show me something packaged as science fiction I’m going to measure it against those rules. Too often, movie sf falls short.

Anyone who’s seen movies made from beloved stories knows how badly it can go. But sometimes it can go right. I hope this is one of those times.

flamethrowing-hurdy-gurdy:

There’s a lot of moments in Fury Road where the characters make little sounds that convey a looot more than dialogue could, but they’re the sort of sounds that people in real life are expected and taught to keep contained. They’re emotional sounds: fear, excitement, anger, stuff that a normal well-adjusted human being is supposed to keep under control unless they want someone to look at them the way you’d look at an animal.

I need to go through the film and compile a list with screenshots. Sounds like that are really important to me, because I’m so not okay with suppressing them.

One that I love is the startled “eep” that one of the wives makes right after the three shots are fired at the end of the Max/Furiosa brawl. It’s such a cool grace note after all that furious action, but also furthers characterization.

MMFR novelty T-shirts, part 2! (Part 1)

Had SO MUCH FUN with this (even though I spent 1000 years on every wife and 10 minutes on everybody else.) Got some help and suggestions: sickmonkey1027 suggested Foxy Grandpa for Ace and gatsbygal suggested Joe in a Female Body Inspector shirt (which might be the sleaziest thing I’ve ever drawn, I feel the need to wash my tablet with soap) Also I think someone mentioned a “if lost, return to Slit” in the old post so I totally stole that idea for Cheedo.

Personal favorites are the two last one. For Max I couldn’t find ANYTHING and for Furiosa I found TOO MUCH (seriously, do you know how many horrendous trucker/asskicking novelty shirts there are out there? It’s kinda overwhelming) Then I googled “dog novelty t-shirt” AND GUESS WHAT POPPED UP ON THE FIRST PAGE. Same with Haul It Like You Stole It, when I laid my eyes on that beauty I just knew it was the one.

redcandle17:

Nux vs. the Wives

1. Did Cheedo not only not try to help Furiosa (who was saving their asses!) but actually tried to hold back the Dag from helping?  :(

2. Knowing that he’s going to be her pet puppy by the end of that day, it’s kinda adorable that Capable couldn’t manage to get the magazine (commonly but incorrectly called a clip) out of Nux’s hand.

It’s cool being able to study it like this. So yeah, Cheedo is definitely holding the Dag back in the first two gifs, which explains neither of them being present in the scrum (though the Dag does arrive to try to pull Max off Furiosa via the chain in the fifth gif). If you watch the whole fight you can see Cheedo grabbing onto the Dag just prior to this, when the initial struggle over the handgun was happening. That’s after the Dag, who previously helped out by tossing the boltcutters to Furiosa, had drifted back toward her (Cheedo’s) location.

The fight has 15 distinct elements:

  • Max
  • Furiosa
  • Nux
  • the 5 wives
  • the sawed-off shotgun
  • the chain
  • the door
  • the boltcutters
  • the water hose and nozzle
  • the handgun
  • the magazine

It’s like an engine, with all those parts interacting violently and chaotically, but all working to propel the scene toward its conclusion. And despite the chaos it all reads comprehensibly.

New Milky Way Galaxy Map Is The Most Accurate Ever Created

“What’s it like to draw a map of the vast galaxy in which our solar system is embedded? NASA has likened the task to drawing a map of your house without ever having ventured from your living room.”

Now, scientists have created what they say is the most accurate map of the Milky Way Galaxy. Wow. (via huffingtonpost)
