“And yet, here we are in the spring, and Elementary is not only the only new show of the fall that I’m still following, but it’s fast climbing the chart of my current favorite series. What’s more, and completely unexpectedly, Elementary has found a new, meaningful take on Sherlock Holmes—or, more precisely, on the way that modern pop culture has perceived Sherlock Holmes, to which it offers a much-needed corrective.”

Asking the Wrong Questions: Watson, I Need You: Thoughts on Elementary’s First Season

Yees <3 This is why I love this show.

Okay. Commencing my watching of this show.

Adventure Time Fact: Marceline and Hunson Abadeer are voiced by real-life father and daughter Olivia and Martin Olson.  Olivia and Martin are in a band together, so happily they seem to have a better relationship than do Marceline and her dad.

Photographer Has Girlfriend Capture 360° View from Rooftop, Proposes At the End

When Wellington, New Zealand-based photographer Brady Dyer proposed to his then-girlfriend Emma in Florence, Italy last year, he had her capture her own special moment on camera. Dyer writes,

After having the most amazing day ever, we were on the deck of our penthouse apartment drinking Veuve at which point Emma said “this moment couldn’t get any more perfect”… She was wrong! I told her to do a big 360 degree video of the sunset finishing on me and I would wave and say hello. [#]

The whole thing “couldn’t have gone more perfectly,” the photographer says.

Awww.

Friday, May 31st, 2013

it-hurts-because-it-mattered:

No but this is actually a big part of why I ship them so much. They’ve both had to grow up so fast, become leaders when most people their age aren’t even adults yet, And they both have nobody but their closest friends believing that they can actually do anything, until they literally cemement their power in blood and fire.

They both always have to be *so* strong, and stoic, and unflinching whenever anyone is around. “Kill the boy and let the man be born.” “If I look back I am lost.” The words they constantly tell themselves, in their moments of doubt and fear, could be so easily applied to the other.

And I imagine that when they finally meet, they’ll both be there, playing their parts, staring each other dead in the eye, betraying nothing, until one of them (probably Dany) says something, maybe a subtle threat, that’s just slightly off, that sounds a little bit ridiculous in context, or sounds absurd because of the cultural divide. Then the other one just stands there confused for a minute, and starts to look quizzical for a few seconds, then the tense silence is broken by a muffled chuckle slipping past their lips, then as (let’s say it’s Jon laughing, for ease of pronouns) he starts breaking out in laughter despite himself, Dany realises what she said and joins him in laughter, and they just can’t help it, and they’re laughing at themselves, because they both see what nobody else would dare to. That they’re both children, playing at being queens or lords or whatever their roles are, and they’re doing it better than any of the adults ever could.

And that’s when this picture was taken.

damn

For those who don’t know, Johina is the daughter of Shaker Aamer, a Saudi Arabian citizen who was living in Britain at the time of his arrest. The evidence for the arrest (that he participated in the Battle of Tora Bora) in question is based on evidence received from questionable sources through torture procedures. The Bush administration even admitted later that their evidence was weak. He never was officially charged for any wrongdoing and never had a trial. He was detained in Guantánamo Bay Prison in 2001 and was cleared for release TWICE in 2007 and 2009 BUT STILL REMAINS IN GITMO. His mental and physical health have been declining over the years he has spent at GITMO, and he is currently participating in a hunger strike with many other prisoners to protest their wrongful detention. He has lost 40% of his body weight because of this. Government, if there was a time where you could actually get your shit together and do something right, now would be the time.

Guantanamo really pisses me off.

Epiphany I

(Latvian original by Imants Ziedonis; my English translation)

It is very early. The sun has not yet opened his eyes. Mother has not begun rocking my cradle. Father has not yet gone to tend the horses. The shoes are having a lie-in, beyond the door, over the threshold, on the paths.

the x kit extension dude has to be like the most apologetic person ever. i almost want to cook him dinner and tell him that it’s not his fault, shhh

Seconded. Also, as a web programmer, I appreciate how hard he works at keeping XKit up to date. And its architecture is pretty impressive.

I wonder who Sulu plans to give those flowers to?

Given where she’s sitting, I’m guessing those flowers are for Uhura for her promotion.

Thursday, May 30th, 2013

“The successful gardener has always known you don’t need to master the science of the soil, which is yet another hotbed of microbial fermentation, in order to nourish and nurture it. You just need to know what it likes to eat — basically, organic matter — and how, in a general way, to align your interests with the interests of the microbes and the plants.”

Some of My Best Friends Are Germs,” Michael Pollan, New York Times Magazine

I liked this article a lot. This observation Pollan makes near the end of it is kind of tangential to the main thrust of the article, but I liked it a lot, too.
