Solidarity with children is often neglected or even made a joke of, so I wanna take a second and tell y’all what I wish I could go back in time and tell myself:
You’re right. School is bullshit, homework is bullshit, waking up early is bullshit, going to bed early is bullshit. Some adults are just pointlessly cruel, even those in positions of authority over you. Sometimes adults are wrong, and, in fact, sometimes you are right
You were born with an innate sense of justice and fairness and adults have spent your entire life trying to beat it out of you so you’ll shut up and do what you’re told in an unjust and unfair society. Don’t let them. Many of us have to take effort to relearn the wisdom you have right now, the ability to tell when something is bullshit even if you can’t articulate why yet
You deserve happiness, fulfillment, and liberation just as much as any adult. Those first 18 years are just as important as any other time in your life, and it’s time you’ll never get back. Don’t let anyone take them from you just because you’re too young to fight back
Question everything, and never take “that’s just the way it is” as an answer. Sometimes when things don’t make sense to you it’s because they just don’t make any goddamn sense
Pick your battles, and be strategic. Don’t take this post as permission to go starting fights for no reason. But remember that you have worth, and our society tends to not respect that. And you’re right: that is bullshit
some of y’all with printed copies of fanfiction are going to die someday and your books will end up at the secondhand book shop and someone is just going to innocently pick up blorbo/shitto enemies to lovers and when i think of it this way let’s keep printing fanfiction
Speaking of black phoebes nesting under eaves, a pair of them nested at one of the restrooms at the State Beach, and the fledglings are out of the nest. I saw one trying to perch on the dome of a tent and sliding down repeatedly.
Here’s what they look like:
I was at the State Beach because I was checking on the snowy plovers, who are doing great! This year we have not one but two nests (so far), and while I was watching another pair was acting frisky, so maybe a third nest will happen. After 60 years without a nesting on this beach before last year it’s exciting to see the birds coming back. The State Park biologist is going to hold volunteer docent training, and you can bet I’ll be there.
You dont have to be rich to do a bit of this actually
RIP Medical Debt is a charity (and therefore takes donations). They buy the rights to medical debt and then forgive them. So far they’ve forgiven over 1B in medical debt.
So a little ray of hope for someone out there today.
Oliver then proceeded to detail how with $50 and knowledge of the law he was able to successfully apply online to create a debt buying company named “Central Asset Recovery Professionals,” or as Oliver put it, “CARP” named after “a bottom-feeding fish.”
After setting up a rudimentary website for CARP, the satirical, but still real company was offered a $15 million package of medical debt for $60,000.
Oliver explained that the debt was out of statute, which means it is the kind of debt that a collector can only continue to collect, but not sue the debtor for.
Then, instead of chasing down the 9,000 debtors in the debt package as a normal collection agency would, Oliver decided to stage the largest one-time giveaway in television history and work with the nonprofit RIP Medical Debt to forgive the $15 million with no consequences for the debtors.
