@lies we were literally sitting still for 3 hours, ended up being an 11 hour race
I’m super pumped for the racing, its going to be epic being able to actually see it up close and personal! I’m glad someone else thinks its awesome we get to host it again!

It’s beyond awesome. I grew up loving the Cup, the whole idea of it, but it was always overlaid with the knowledge of the bogus shenanigans the NYYC engaged in to hang onto it for so many years. When it went to Perth it was great, and made for super-exciting racing, but honestly one of the best things about it was being able to enjoy it without feeling guilty about the legacy of less-than-fair competition. And in all the moving around since then there have been better and worse incarnations of it, but for my money no one has ever put on a better Cup competition than New Zealand. And since the path to victory for some time now has basically been to hire the best Kiwi sailors, it really feels appropriate that the race is going back there.

Becalmed behind Waiheke ⛵

Heh. In my home waters (southern California) that’s what we’d call a good stiff breeze! 😀

Seriously, though; it is going to be so awesome to have the Cup held in Auckland again. You Kiwis are the world’s best sailors for a reason. Can’t wait to watch.

Cruising

They’ve been consistently resident at Lake Cachuma for decades, according to Paul Lehman’s Birds of Santa Barbara County, but elsewhere in the county, including Carpinteria, their numbers have gone up and down. Lately there’s been an upswing, such that I’ve been consistently seeing them over most of the past year.

It’s always a thrill.

derangedhyena-delphinidae:

the fish are gone and our children are cursed.

They must perceive that something is wrong… I wonder how they rationalize it.

September 2017 Nemesis Bird

They’ve been seen all over town. I’ve been going to those places and birding nonstop for the past two weeks and haven’t seen one yet (heard them one time in the police station tams, though).

*shakes fist* Chickadeeeeeeeeees!!! 😀😜👍

thegamblingbird:

When I lived in #Bucaramanga #Colombia this wonderful Merlin would visit the tree across from my balcony to eat it’s breakfast right at the same time I would eat mine. I was going thru a rough patch at that moment and for some reason watching that bird would make me feel more connected to the world. I guess you know you are a bird nerd when you find a sense of connectivity and wonder sitting by yourself watching one bird eat another. #birding #audubon

Last Saturday I was part of an outing for beginning birdwatchers that I’d help set up, and at the end of the outing we were down by the mouth of Carpinteria Creek. I was looking through my binoculars at a group of about 30 Brewer’s Blackbirds across the creek from me when I suddenly realized that in my field of view a falcon was coming straight toward them (and straight toward me).

It was a Merlin. There was an explosion of blackbirds and the Merlin chased them around and through the bushes and at one point there was a very loud squawking, but I don’t think it caught anything because after a few seconds it flew out and banked over the creek and continued on its way.

It was quite a show! :-)
