Hello, hello! It is I, your Poe Party Secret Santa! How was your day? It has finally started to snow where I live. I’m not much of a winter person, but I can appreciate the winter aesthetic if I’m indoors and warm. I would like to know more about you! What are some things or fandoms you enjoy? Also how did you get into watching Poe Party?

Monday, November 21st, 2016

This blog is probably the most up-to-date source on things I’m into. But since no one has time to scroll through the whole thing, I’ll do my best to summarize.

I enjoy nature, and learning about new things. I enjoy period drama and science fiction. I enjoy long walks that (lately) involve playing Pokemon Go. I enjoy sailing, including (sometimes) competitive sailing, though that’s something I do less these days than previously. I like working with others to make the communities we share the kinds of places people want to spend time in.

I got into watching Poe Party through @clavisa. I’d come to know her through the Lizzie Bennet Diaries, a webseries we were both fans of. One evening (specifically, the evening of October 24, 2013, it turns out), she posted the following:

You guys, there are only nine (9) posts in the entire A Tell Tale Vlog tag, and three of them are by me.

I need people to fangirl with.

Please watch it here (the eps are less than 2 minutes each) and then come geek out with me over the literary references and juxtaposition of historical/formal and modern/vernacular speech and also genderific can you tell me what time period her dress belongs to?

So because clavisa very much knows What Is What, I checked it out. I’ve never regretted it.

Note for Tumblr historians/archaeologists: It looks like clavisa’s earliest post tagged A Tell Tale Vlog was made 20 minutes earlier that same evening. In that post she linked to this video:

…and wrote:

So I just discovered A Tell Tale Vlog because it was recommended in the same Hypable article that recommended AoJE and I’ve only watched one episode so far but I think it’s is going to be hilarious. (Please go check it out so I have people to meta with? thanks)

So. Here we are. Thank you for asking, Santa. Stay warm and cozy in your snowy environs!

clavisa:

I have done the research!

How (I imagine) Hillary Clinton became a fan of the Lizzie Bennet Diaries

May 2012

Hillary Rodham Clinton knew that she was sometimes compared to fictional female nerds. Hermione Granger (the books were a bit too young for Chelsea, but she’d read them anyway), Leslie Knope (her staffers had shown her a few episodes of that show), Tracy Flick (she’d met Reese Witherspoon shortly after it came out).

In fact, she was rather tickled by it.

But the young woman in the animated gif that her intern (Laura, 23, liked Jane Austen novels) had attached to the email wasn’t Emma Watson or Amy Poehler. In fact, she looked far more ordinary – a redhead sitting in a bedroom, looking into the camera, waving a stack of papers and apparently saying “I have done the research”.

Hillary chuckled appreciatively, “If there’s one thing you can say about me, I have indeed done the research.” But perhaps this was a real person, and maybe her research should be turned into policy.

She angled her screen towards her chief assistant (Melanie, 36, grew up in Kansas, just had a baby). “Do you know who’s in this picture?“

Melanie wasn’t sure.

“Make a note to find out what her research is about.”

“Yep,” Melanie scribbled on a notepad, like she’d done 19 times already that day.

Hillary returned to her inbox, and that was that. For now.

Ulalume – Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The identity of Ulalume in the poem is uncertain. Poe scholar and distant relative Harry Lee Poe says it is autobiographical and shows Poe’s grief over the recent death of his wife Virginia.[8] Scholar Scott Peeples notes that “Ulalume” serves as a sequel to “The Raven”.[9] Poetically, the name Ulalume emphasizes the letter L, a frequent device in Poe’s female characters such as “Annabel Lee”, “Eulalie”, and “Lenore”.[10] If it really stands for a deceased love, Poe’s choosing to refer to Ulalume as “the thing” and “the secret” do not seem endearing terms.[11] In one possible view, Ulalume may be representative of death itself.[11]

Ask me how excited I am about more Poe in my future.

I’d ask, but I already know the answer – “Not as excited as Rae is”

Haha. I defer to your superior excitement. Fortunately it’s not a contest.

Looking forward to the next development. They said something about possible crowdfunding in the announcement video. If I could direct a small something their way and thereby hasten the Return of Poe, my small something would be headed their way faster than a raven could fly.

I re-watched the invitation video today, and I love it so much. More Poe, more Lenore! :-)

This is awesome. Poe wins by a landslide.

The best part of this is the tweets from Shipwrecked!Poe.

Thanks to thelbdcarecenter for voting Socially Awkward Poe the Best Socially Awkward Guy! We passed the news on to Edgar and he muttered, “Oh, well that seems… appropriate.” Then he shut the doors and drew the blinds, we assume because he was so overcome with emotion.

Hope everyone’s excited for the start of Kissing in the Rain and our Tumblr transmedia experiment on March 10th! In the meantime, give A Tell Tale Vlog a rewatch!

Much love,

Shipwrecked

ATTV really does hold up well to rewatching. And it’s so short that you can get the whole thing in in a single sitting. I love seeing my favorite moments roll around. Like pretty much all of episode 6.

It’s not you. It’s just that I hate being near you, and everything about you, and the things that you do.

I am haunted by many women. Many women…

So good.

shipwreckedcomedy:

Missing your weekly fix of shipwreckedcomedy and A Tell Tale Vlog? Never fear, we’re still around! There’s a team intro/update video coming your way tomorrow! In the mean time, here’s a behind the scenes pic of Sean as Poe.

[Edited to add: Yes, that is his Poestache in his hands.]

There’s an AU DC Comics version of Socially Awkward Poe in which Poe is a superhero who can travel through time, talk to ghosts, etc., but between sessions of world-saving he removes the Poestache, and suddenly no one recognizes mild-mannered Sean as the same guy.

This leads to awesome scenes like when he’s working at the coffeehouse and a group of his co-worker baristas are going on about how dreamy Poe is, speculating about what his secret identity could be, and one of them says, “Yeah, he could be anybody. Like, Sean could be Poe,” and they all burst out laughing at his expense. And he just sighs and turns back to the espresso machine, saying quietly to himself, “Nameless here for evermore.”

Worth the wait. Also, I liked getting the canonical explanation for why the girl scout looked so much like Lenore: She was possessing her.

Update: Ooh, and I didn’t notice before, but we’re getting a “team intro/update video” next Monday! Yay!

Yes, it looks like the delay may have been further delayed.

I’m cutting her some slack, myself, given the fact that she’s, you know, dead. I figure if she can go to all the trouble of communicating from the afterlife, the least I can do is try to be a little patient.

shipwreckedcomedy:

Here’s a teaser pic from Lenore’s Draw My Life episode for all you lovely patient shipsters! Sorry for our tech delays, the latest episode of A Tell Tale Vlog will be out by 7pm PT tonight. In the meantime, feel free to rewatch Edgar’s attempt at a Draw My Life.

There’s the imagining and wanting the thing. And there’s the thing. And there’s the having had the thing, and reflecting on it and posting overlong meta about it and reading the overlong meta and shared squee from your internet friends, people you never expected would be part of your life but somehow became that.

Of those three (the imagining beforehand, the actual experience, and the postmortem), I’m not sure which is the best. It seems to vary from thing to thing. Like, there are movies where the trailer is so awesome I can’t imagine how wonderful the film will be, and I spend weeks looking forward to it, only to be disappointed. Or there are things I don’t even know are coming, and maybe don’t even appreciate when I see them, but over time, after reading others’ analysis and maybe going back to re-watch, I come to really cherish.

One of the cool things for me about ATTV has been how good it has been in each phase. The anticipation (like now, waiting for Lenore’s Draw My Life at 7 p.m.) has been great (well, to the extent I’ve had that experience, seeing as I only found out about the show near the end). And then the initial viewing has been great. And then the post-viewing meta and re-watching has been great.

It’s undifferentiated goodness from end to end.

Hi Alysson! Question- In Jane’s world, we know that she’s aware of Lizzie and her videos. However, I’m wondering; in this universe, is she a fan of the adaptation, or is Lizzie just a regular person who had a vlog? In other words, does Pride and Prejudice exist in the AOJE-verse? This is probably a silly question, I’m just curious.

Thursday, November 7th, 2013

Great question! We’ve always tried to align ourselves with the information Bernie Su’s about his in/out world theories. To paraphrase wildly, he answered this question by speculating that P&P doesn’t necessarily exist in Lizzie’s world (but adaptations of P&P do) ex: Lizzie says that Bridget Jones Diary is one of her favourite films.

We’ve tried to keep to that idea, and have avoided ‘Jane Eyre’ existing in Jane’s world (I imagine it would be fairly traumatic to stumble into a book store and find a book with her name on it, and then upon reading it discover that she was living in some kind of ‘Truman Show’ parallel of a 19th century novel), but Jane watches ‘Sound of Music’ and I imagine the film ‘Rebecca’ still would exist for her.

Since we’ve put Jane in Lizzie’s world more or less, P&P does not exist for Jane either.

Furthermore, in Jane’s world Lizzie was a regular YouTuber. A person who vlogged, and doesn’t vlog anymore. We felt Jane would be attracted to the family aspect of LBD, as well as the equality and respect in Lizzie/Darcy’s relationship. A lot of people have asked if Jane is watching Emma (and while some of our team definitely are (including myself)) Jane cannot for two reasons.
A) All videos Emma posts are out of world [X]
B) Even if Emma did post her videos – Jane would see Emma as a completely separate you-tuber, and probably wouldn’t watch them, because:
1) Jane would see a person similar to Blanche
2) Jane would be frustrated by the ‘approval’ aspect of Emma. It would seem very Johanna-like to her that everything/everyone should be approved by one self-selected individual.
3) Jane is disinterested with the commercial aspect of weddings.

From an objective point of view, I think Jane would admire Emma’s loyalty (as well as Knightley’s) but Jane is quick to distrust people (as might we all be in her shoes), though she has a penchant for changing her mind about people.

The thing I like most about this one is that it matches the subtlety of the show perfectly. Just that hint of eye-narrowing at the end. So good.

It was a little sad, but poignant, to have become so enamored of this series only near the end, such that my first day of anticipating a new episode and then excitedly watching it only resulted in… bittersweet goodbyes from Edgar and Lenore. There was less comedy than I’d hoped for. But then, it’s hardly the show’s fault that I was tuning in so near the end. It was a fitting conclusion.

It had such a gentle spirit. It was minimal, understated, the episodes brief and the comedy subtle, but it all worked. It wove a spell, created its own world, a world whose appeal I can’t really explain. But it grew stronger the more I watched. I guess it _was_ a kind of madness, the sort that grows on you without your being aware of its progression.

I love the way Edgar and Lenore appeared separately at first, and drew apart by the end, frustrating my little shipper heart, only appearing on-camera together those few times, building up to that one moment of actual contact, but then immediately and dismissively breaking it off. I think I need to watch the whole thing again, start to finish, to track the structure of that approach and separation. It’s a metaphor for all relationships, right? A microcosm of their beginning, middle, and end.

And God is it funny. Not at first, maybe, and not for everyone. I showed the first episode to someone, and she watched it all without expression. “Not my thing,” she said. I nodded, and didn’t push it.

That’s okay. It doesn’t have to be her thing. It’s mine.
