personalspaceshow:

Support a project that’s been in the works for nearly two years!

It’s not like I’m saying it’s LBD in space. But it’s totally LBD in space.

Kickstarter’s currently at $12,606 (out of the goal of $45K, with 26 days to go).

The Epic Adventures of Lydia Bennet – Chapter Five – Page 1 – Wattpad:

noblerorick:

Did rachelkiley and I post the next chapter of THE EPIC ADVENTURES OF LYDIA BENNET on Wattpad just now?

Yes.  Yes we did.

Getting this a chapter at a time makes me feel nostalgic for the days of waiting all week for five minutes of video.

The Lizzie Bennet Diaries: Characters + Number of episodes they appear in.

Heh. Who would ever bother to amass so much data?

I’ve made the point before, but this is why I think Ashley doesn’t get enough credit.

All of it. All of the credit.

Okay. Not all. But a lot. And more than she gets.

what 4 episodes was she not in?

also I’d love to see these including the other 60 videos!

According to a spreadsheet made by some obsessive fan, the four episodes in the main LizzieBennet channel that did not feature Ashley were:

  • Lizzie Bennet is in Denial (ep. 15, 2012-05-28), with Charlotte and Jane, including Laura Spencer’s Jane!Darcy saying, “It’s super important.”
  •  Enjoy the Adorbs (ep. 20, 2012-06-14), with Lydia and Jane, including these Lydia lines: “My name is Lydia Bennet and this is my HAUL!”, “Talk about your truth universally acknowledged! Am I right?”, and “drunken hookup marriage eff tee DUBS!” I wonder what that Mary Kate Wiles is doing these days. She had real talent.
  • Your Pitch Needs Work (ep. 41, 2012-08-27), in which Maxwell Glick’s Ricky Collins makes a job offer to Julia Cho’s Charlotte. She’d never take it, of course. I mean, he’s ridiculous!
  • Summer Friends (ep. 69, 2012-12-03), with Lydia and Jane, including Jane!Lydia costume theater. Fun fact: This was the only time anyone not-Lydia played Lydia during costume theater. (The Lydia!Lydia happened in the above-mentioned “Enjoy the Adorbs”.)

I liked this episode a lot.

One small thing I liked about it was the prominent use of @orangepenguino’s puppy-sized elephant, which I’m pretty sure is the same one that Bing gave Jane during the Netherfield arc.

Side note: I wish neither-saint-nor-sinner would tell me what she thinks Caroline was thinking in this moment. Because I bet it would be cool.

Wednesday, April 30th, 2014

So, someone who is really special bought me this shirt for a present. And I wear it, but only rarely out of the house, because someone else who is really special and helpfully monitors my clothing has told me that it’s scary, and I might not want to wear a scary shirt (depending on the situation), because people will notice it, and I typically opt for a low-key public demeanor.

But today I  was behind on laundry, and needed a shirt to go to the gym, and this one actually was just about the last clean one in the dresser, so I threw it on.

As a result I learned three things:

1. My fashion advisor is correct. People noticed the shirt. Two people, one of whom I’ve never spoken to before, approached me to ask about it.

2. It is harder than I would have expected to explain what this shirt means. I managed to explain that a) it was the Darcy character from a modern-day adaptation of Pride and Prejudice, b) he appeared in a show on YouTube, and c) the show was called the Lizzie Bennet Diaries. I didn’t get to explain anything about costume theater, or do my impression of Ashley doing Lizzie doing Daniel doing Darcy being a robot, or provide any explanation of how the word “malfunction” figures into this. Nor did I get to say anything about the John Green “pizza” shirt, and how this shirt is referencing that shirt. Really, I haven’t felt like such a failure in a long time. My advice: If you’re going to wear this shirt in public, spend some time beforehand thinking through how to explain it.

3. Selfies are harder to take than I would have thought. I tried to take a selfie in the mirrored wall at the gym to document my actual wearing of the shirt, but the photo came out blurry and lame. Still, I know echojardini, at least, has commented on the rarity of me-selfies, so despite the crappiness of the actual photo, here you go:

I can’t be the only one in the fandom who still wonders where the heck everything is set in LBD and EA. Aside from locations such as Los Angeles and San Francisco, and the general area of Southern California, we don’t really know where everything is….

I also imagined the Bennets living in SLO or the surrounding wine country. It just seemed a more likely spot for a wealthy family to buy a little getaway house than Fresno. (Sorry, Fresno, no offense.)

Having lived in Goleta for a few years, I don’t think it has suburbs. It’s like: beach, university, bar, noisy apartment building, Habit Burger, lemon trees. That’s literally it. (Sorry Goleta, no offense.)

I spent some time obsessing over this back when the episodes were airing, and eventually came to the same conclusion: San Luis Obispo is the best match for Longbourn’s location. PD has said it’s supposed to be California between LA and SF, there’s a university for Lizzie to attend, nearby suburbia to match the neighborhood of cousin Mary seen in The Lydia Bennet episodes, and an opportunity for the Bennet parents to be away for the night in episode 44, having gone to “dinner on the coast, at that hotel.” There’s also some upscale vineyard/horsey country to lure the Lee and Darcy types.

There are some problems with SLO, and some of those problems can be solved by placing the story closer to Santa Barbara, but that raises other issues. When you get down to it, I think the show’s creators made a conscious decision to keep it ambiguous, since making it more specific would have been more work in terms of writing, production design, or both. I kind of wish they’d gone the extra mile and created a more-believable specific setting for the show, but that wasn’t the kind of show they chose to make.

In which I’m hiding my face in embarrassment. But that’s the view at ground level if you’re standing under the windows of at least one version of Pemberley Digital.

Reblogging myself to give some context: Here’s Lizzie and Gigi in a cap from episode 77 (“Tour Guide”):

It’s a little hard to see the details, but that’s the same building behind Lizzie as you can see behind me in the image above.

Ta da! I am a dork. :-)

I know I’ve said that it was Charlotte that kept me coming back to the show before the obsession had truly taken hold, but in the interest of full disclosure I must admit that Lydia’s crazy double-jointed elbows also played a role. I kept wanting to see her do that again, just to convince myself it was real.

As this set shows, the show did not disappoint.

Meeting/selfieing with the cast & crew of The Lizzie Bennet Diaries at VidCon 2013 (click on the photos for high-res)

i just get a lot of motherly feels when I look at this photoset.

The thing that gets me is Jessica. Not just because of the I’m-the-bird-and-she’s-the-snake thing. Because she’s not doing that. I mean, she’s just this ordinary, friendly-looking (okay; super pretty) person. And I recognize the face as Caroline’s, more or less, but she’s not Caroline. Because I’m not hypnotized, and she’s not this ultimate personification of evil and beauty and comical foiled plots and LOOK AT ME AND DESPAIR!!

I don’t know how she does that. But she does. Because there it is (or isn’t, in this case).

Awesome.

Get outta here! Way to go, you guys.

whaaaat!

It’s been interesting following the reactions of the various honorees to the Emmy. A community of creators sharing their joy, giving virtual high-fives, celebrating what was by all accounts a team effort.

And… this.

Not to take away from Hank’s contribution; it was his money at the outset, his vision, and his periodic check-ins with Bernie that provided key guidance. People willing to take big risks sometimes have big egos, and when those risks pay off it’s understandable if they crow a little.

But some of the stuff that’s happened since the show ended, especially the grumbling about how the Kickstarter overage is being spent and the lack of accounting for that, has left me feeling a little less charitable. And yeah, he lampshaded it with the “I’m going to take that down tomorrow” part, but still, there’s a whiff, at least to me, of his taking more individual credit than is quite seemly, under the circumstances.

But maybe that’s just me being sensitive. The Emmy is really cool, regardless, and everyone who worked on the show deserves to be proud of what they accomplished.

Classic literature vlog adaptations (spreadsheet)

Classic literature vlog adaptations (spreadsheet):

I’ve made some updates to my LBD episodes spreadsheet in the last few days. I broke it out onto separate tabs to make it easier to find things, and added a bunch of video links I’d been accumulating. It now features the following tabs:

  • LBD show (160 videos): All the in-world videos from LBD and spinoffs.
  • LBD event (38 videos): Out-of-world videos, interviews, Q&As, etc. featuring the LBD cast and creators.
  • LBD fanvid (48 videos): Fan edits, parodies, etc.
  • AoJE (9 videos): The Autobiography of Jane Eyre. Kind of my favorite thing these days for combatting post-LBD withdrawal.
  • Sanditon (5 videos): The main in-universe Sanditon episodes.
  • Sanditon Extras (2 videos): Peripheral and out-of-universe Sanditon-related videos. I plan to add the RP videos from Sanditon citizens, but for now it’s just the Q&A that Alexandra, Jay, and Margaret did; along with Sarah’s cool “Tumblr User’s Guide to Reddit”. But I’ll get this fleshed out soon.

I’d like to add additional tabs for other vlog-style adaptations of classic lit; I know there was an Emma, and possibly there are others floating around? Please drop me an ask if you know of one that I could add.

Thanks!
