where did all the new adventures of peter and wendy episodes go?

They’ve been taken down for the moment. Kyle has responded to a few people who’ve asked about it to say they’ll be back, that a cool announcement is coming, and that he’s prevented by some sort of special/magic/legal/contractual reasons from giving more details at this time.

There was a mention in a recent video on strawburry17‘s YouTube channel that seemed to imply that NPAW episodes would be airing there regularly on “Saturday and Sunday”, though it didn’t say whether those would be Season 1 or Season 2 videos (the announcement featured Season 1 screenshots).

And the Season 1 videos are back; yay! Along with a Season 2 air date announcement: June 12.

Okay but is it just me or have all the New Peter and Wendy videos been taken off YouTube?

They do appear to have been removed or made private or something. Possibly it has to do with the “Big Announcement” Kyle talked about in the video from yesterday? Maybe they have some kind of new video distribution partnership, or something, such that they wanted to move the videos to another account?

Seems like a weird thing to do, though, in the sense that it invalidates all the posts and links pointing at the old locations for the videos. So maybe it was a mistake?

Hopefully we’ll find out soon. newpeterwendy: any news?

I made two gifs for a set and then found out I couldn’t download any more videos to finish it! I won’t be able to gif their shows unless the videos come back!

It’s quite bizarre. I’ve tried every means I can think of to ask Kyle and the other creators why the season one videos have all been made private, and it’s just been complete radio silence from them. The show won a couple of IAWTV awards tonight (for orangepenguino’s production design; yay Katie! as well as for transmedia), and there have been lots of congratulatory tweets flying around, so it’s not like they’re offline. I think they must be intentionally choosing not to say anything about it.

Anyway, hopefully it will all make sense eventually, and the videos will be made available again (maybe on strawburry17’s YouTube channel, since she made a mention in a preview video recently that New Peter and Wendy videos were going to be airing there in a weekend slot, or something like that). So, maybe they entered into some kind of agreement to release the videos there, and it’s all hush hush until some Big Announcement is made, and a condition of the agreement is that the videos be taken down at EpicRobotTV in the meantime?

That’s the best guess I can come up with.

There’s a part of me that wishes they would have used all the funniest outtakes for the actual show. Something about Wendy dropping F-bombs works for me.

Probably best that that part of me is not in charge. Neverland is surreal enough as it is.

Also:

You know the part when Tink is dying, and you have to declare your belief in fairies in order for her to live? This is that part.

This show is so good.

It reminds me of rachelkiley‘s episodes in the early days of LBD. They were so smart, so fun, with so many layers of meaning and humor and observation. It really brought home to me that when you are engaging with a fictional world you are inhabiting the writer’s imagination, and some writers’ imaginations are more exciting, interesting places to inhabit.

It’s not just about craft. It’s about how they see the world.

I liked this episode a lot.

One small thing I liked about it was the prominent use of @orangepenguino’s puppy-sized elephant, which I’m pretty sure is the same one that Bing gave Jane during the Netherfield arc.

Side note: I wish neither-saint-nor-sinner would tell me what she thinks Caroline was thinking in this moment. Because I bet it would be cool.

Peter and Wendy: Millennials in Neverland

Peter and Wendy: Millennials in Neverland:

amethystmarietm:

Peter and Wendy made me laugh. A lot. This is exactly how you’d picture Peter Pan and the Darlings if they were fifteen years older and living in modern America and literally nothing else was changed about them. Peter is goofy, cheeky, and goes back and forth between charming and infuriating. John takes everything too seriously, but is really no less childish than Peter or Michael. He’s essentially Dwight K. Schrute, right down to being Assistant [To The] Editor-in-Chief of his father’s newspaper. He’s contrasted and complemented by Michael, who is Michael Scott as played by Michael Cera. In the fourth episode, Michael and Peter skip work to play video games and share a “magic” brownie. (Yeah, it’s that kind of show.) Wendy, mature to a fault and surrogate mom to her brothers, could’ve easily be written as the resident shrewish buzzkill. She isn’t. She’s quirky, sweet, and fun, and when she tells the boys (and us) that everyone has to grow up sometime, we sympathize with her and want to see Peter and her brothers reach this epiphany, too. So far she’s my favorite character.

This is a really good article. A+ would recommend.

I had the same reaction to the moment when Wendy chooses to go off and have fun with the boys. It would have been easy/obvious/trite to have Wendy be the too-grown-up killjoy. Just as it would have been easy/obvious/trite to have Tink be the “imaginary friend” that only Peter sees and talks to. There were moments as I watched the first four episodes when I found myself assuming that both those things were the case, then was surprised to learn that they weren’t. Wendy chucks her responsibilities to go out the window and have fun with the boys. All four of them see and talk to Tink.

In hindsight it makes perfect sense, and ties the adaptation back to the source in a fun, creative way. But that moment of surprise and discovery was wonderful.

It all starts with the writing. Actors can be cute and charming and hilarious and heartbreaking and scary and awesome, and all the web series that have become important to me over the past few years have had that. But you can’t fake the intelligence, thoughtfulness, and care of good writing. It’s there or it’s not.

In this show it’s here.

Growing up

Saturday, May 10th, 2014

I’ve spent a good chunk of the last day thinking about those first four episodes of The New Adventures of Peter and Wendy. I wasn’t aware of the show as it was working its way through the Kickstarter campaign, so I didn’t really have any expectations.

I’m surprised by how much I like it. One thing I’ve enjoyed is the way it explicitly adopts the conventions of the Lizzie Bennet Diaries, but extends them in interesting ways. The dual points of view, with the “Tink cam”, is a really cool way of letting the camera move, giving the characters someone to talk to, and doing away with a lot of the logical concerns that felt cumbersome at times in LBD (why is the camera on? and why is this person okay with it?)

Even in the more straightforward vlog-style episodes, the series builds on the conventions of LBD in ways that are subtle, but at least for me really noticeable. When Wendy goes into costume theater as her mother in the first part of her first video, it was impossible not to see that as a Mrs. Bennet reference. But it was:

  • really funny, in a way that LBD sometimes struggled to pull off, and
  • edgy and adult, in its depiction of a drunk parent.

The whole thing about the content being more “adult” has been really noticeable. I’m not sure it would stand out so much for someone who didn’t spend a year living within the vaguely moralistic constraints of LBD, but when a character in this show asks another if those are “magic brownies”, and the other character widens his eyes and says, “not yet!”, followed by a scene of the two of them acting high (albeit with an in-story explanation of it being Tink’s fairy dust, not THC, that has made them that way), it’s both exciting and, within the context of an LBD-inspired webseries, kind of awesome.

I’m with the Mean Fandom in the disappointment I feel about what PD has been doing lately. At least for me, LBD was at its best when it was taking itself, and its story, seriously, holding itself to a high standard of being respectful of its source material while striving to be about something in how that material was updated.

The New Adventures of Peter and Wendy is doing that, and doing it in a way that feels like a step forward. It feels like a more mature version of a literary-adaptation webseries, one that is actually trying to say something. The choices feel creative and interesting, rather than cartoonish and tired. I want to see what happens next. I care about what happens next.
