The days yulinkuang shares stuff on Twitter that she doesn’t have time to share on Tumblr are the days I most regret not spending more time on Twitter.

I hope it’s okay that I repost this here. I guess there’s a part of me that won’t believe it’s real until it exists on Tumblr. And I very much want it to be real. Can’t wait!

“I’ll love you, dear, I’ll love you. Till China and Africa meet”

Something I loved, even from the first time watching As I Walked Out One Evening, was how the spinny kiss came so early. It’s supposed to be the climax, like it was in Ode. But here it comes almost at the beginning, echoing the poem’s opening celebration of love that outlasts continents.

It creates a sense of expectation, even apprehension. The story has to go somewhere. If the speaker is already spinny-kissing and waxing rhapsodic about timeless love, where is there left to go?

And then it goes there. Auden, and Yulin and Mary Kate and Zack, go there. And Sean goes there, especially in the voiceover, which is my favorite favorite thing.

I loved this so much. I’m sure Yulin will be posting it “officially” soon, and I’ll reblog it then. But something about the layers of self-revelation and honesty, the direct addressing of the difficult gray area that people like Yulin and Mary Kate occupy as creators, even while not being direct at all, because obv., it’s about a cat, worked really well.

A metaphor can be truthful in a way that direct representation sometimes struggles to be. It’s a collaborative performance, with the listener an active participant. It feels intimate, like a shared secret.

I don’t know. I also loved it because it reminded me of this:

Favorite characters: Cecilia

“For one shot in the film, we were looking at photos of MK to use as Charlie’s cell phone photo ID for Zoe. We have a metric crapton of photos of MK, but I was finding it almost impossible to find a photo where she looked like Zoe. She was either clearly Lily, clearly Zelda, or clearly another character/herself.

“Something that impresses me about working with such great actors like Sean Persaud and Mary Kate Wiles is that they manage to give each character they play a totally different presence and energy, to the point that even finding an old photo that captures a new character can be kind of difficult. Yay actors!”

Yeah, yeah I’m behind the times, so pardon me while I flail because I love love LOVE this video. yulinkuang why do you keep doing this to us??!!!

I was trying to deconstruct my love of it for lies, and I pretty much decided I love everything about it. There’s something touching about the idea of sending a best friend request into the ether, but it’s also poignant because Cecilia’s last best friend was imaginary, and she was the one that did the leaving. And yet Cecilia is so earnest and hopeful! (And lovely.) And then there’s the style: the 50s & 60s vibe that evokes nostalgia, but doesn’t feel dated. I think it’s partly because the colors are so saturated and sharp. (The white background definitely helps them pop!) This story is happening in its own space – namely, Cecilia’s mind – and it’s bright and youthful and sweet. And it’s not just the clothing and props that pop and create this atmosphere; details down to nail polish and lipstick are just as bright, retaining these hopeful/nostalgic/etc. feelings even during closeups. Basically it’s 1 minute and 41 seconds of nonstop delight. (Cecilia, I will be your best friend!)

I am 100% down with this analysis. And really, how cool is it that it isn’t just a fashion video. It’s thoughtful. It has layers. It has characters. It has story.

It has so much!

Also, it’s infinitely gif-able. I thought I Ship It was rich with gif possibilities, but I think Cecilia is my current favorite-thing-ever for maximum gif density. :-)

It freaks me out a little bit when they do this.

Holds Rainbow and Yulin dolls in either hand, smushes them together. “Now collaborate!”

I’m sorry if that was true of your day today. Maybe if you watch the Ode video it will help?
lies Thank you :) And YEAH!! The ODE video was definitely an AWESOME, WONDERFUL, YES GOOD, PRETTY RAD THING in my day!
Can I use this reply to talk a bit…

There’s a wonderful generosity of spirit in Yulin’s work. It’s there in her enthusiasm for her little fandom. It’s there in the mood on-set in that behind-the-scenes video. And it’s there in the finished work, in the stories she chooses to tell and the manner in which she tells them.

I was thinking about this because of an item that Katie Moest (@orangepenguino, the LBD production designer) reblogged the other day about how unhappy George Clooney was with David O. Russell’s behavior on the set of Three Kings. And I’m a fan of David O. Russell’s movies, and maybe Clooney’s experience on that movie isn’t representative of who Russell is as a person, or even of how he typically behaves on set. And there’s a level on which it doesn’t matter, because the creation stands apart from the process that led to its creation. Big-budget Hollywood movies are a different sort of animal than micro-budget web videos, so it’s like comparing apples and oranges (or multinational apple-growing conglomerates and orange seeds, more like).

Edit: Oops. I posted this accidentally before I finished. Heh. Even the Tumblr app finds me long-winded and wants to help me hurry up and tl;dr already. :-)

I just wanted to say how lucky I feel to be able to enjoy the result of Yulin’s generous spirit. I can’t wait to see what she and her creative collaborators dream up next.

While waiting for the “I Didn’t Write This” upload to finish, I finally got around to watching this behind-the-scenes video of the shooting of “The Perils of Growing Up Flat-Chested.” If you’re a Shipwrecked Comedy fan, or a Yulin Kuang fan, or a web video fan, you might enjoy it. I did.

P.S. I found another thing Twitter is good for:
