That is a GORGEOUS photo.

You are super kind.

Here’s another patch of flowers (Black Mustard, I think, in this case) that I saw during my hike in the burn area. They made me think of you. See if you can guess why! 😜

One wet Butterbutt (Yellow-rumped Warbler) – Photo by Dave Govoni

It’s raining in Carp tonight, and our local Butterbutts (mostly Audubon’s, but a few Myrtle’s like this one, too) are probably looking like this. We’ve evacuated (again; fourth time now). The heaviest rains aren’t due until Thursday. Fingers crossed that our house comes through okay. Pretty sure many people’s houses won’t.

I’m more worried about all the people who I know are rolling the dice by ignoring the evacuation order. My neighbor across the street is staying; I talked to him as we were leaving, and he waved off my comment that this storm was going to be bigger than last time. “That’s what they said last time,” he said.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Good luck. I hope you’ll see something… Also, that’s a gorgeous photo.

Thank you! And thank you! That’s a tree that I’m pretty sure isn’t there anymore. I took that photo on the scouting trip that produced the eBird list below, two weeks before the fire. Supposedly the riparian corridor in the base of Romero Canyon only has “moderate” damage, with the understory burned but a lot of the trees only slightly scorched and hopefully surviving. But the hillside above, where this fire road runs… Well. I haven’t been back there yet. But like I said; pretty sure this tree is gone.

Quick note: Last night as the Thomas Fire moved into Carpinteria we evacuated. We’re all fine. Follow me on Twitter (@jbc99) for more details if you’re interested.

Hope to be back on here soonish, but you’ll probably mostly be getting queue from me (at least until that runs out) for the next little bit until things settle down.

Thanks!

In which I go on (and on) about the botched-and-then-corrected evacuation orders issued in Carpinteria last night. If, you know, that’s the kind of thing you’re into.

Today has been a day of fire and ash. We’re still here, watching the wind and waiting to see if we’ll need to evacuate.

There are two arms of the Thomas Fire pushing toward Carpinteria. One arm is coming up the coast from where it tried to burn La Conchita in the wee hours this morning. It’s about 3 miles away, but the fire crews have kept it at bay all day. The other arm is coming through the backcountry north and west of Ojai. It has farther to go to reach us, but fewer firefighters and roads in its way.

You can follow me on Twitter (where I’m @jbc99) if you want to be spammed with the latest updates.

Nearest flames are 15 miles or so away. I feel bad for the people who lost their homes in Ventura last night; anxious for what the next few nights of Santa Anas might mean for us here in Carp. But were packed and ready to scoot if we need to.
