Afternoon stroll and birdwatching
Monday, February 17th, 2020Today is a national holiday (though Wife still had to work), and it was a beautiful day, so I had resolved to do something outside. I convinced my dad to go for a “nature walk” with me. He didn’t want to go to the foresty regional parks in the hills, though; he pointed out that the birdwatching would be better by the bay. So we went to César Chávez Park, which is built on the site of a former landfill (it was still the dump when I was kid) and took a rather leisurely stroll for about an hour, near the end of which we saw some people flying kites (the kind with strings, not the bird!).

This makes me as happy as if I’d seen the Say’s Phoebe myself.

If you post enough pictures of it, I’ll know what a Say’s phoebe looks like and will recognise it when I see one in real life!
You’re ready. Go forth and behold their true splendor, which photographs cannot convey. 🙂
Oh, it might also help if you listen to a recording. Many times I’m alerted to their presence by hearing their plaintive, downslurred call.

They’re breathtakingly attractive. Also: great news! You’re surrounded by them!
Get a pair of binoculars (any binoculars will do), go to one of those red hotspots where they’ve been reported in the last 30 days, and SEE ONE!
I feel like maybe I should drive up there and provide guide services. It is Very Important That You See This Bird. 🙂
Today’s entry in the World’s Classiest Birb competition:

I’m telling you, @anonsally, can’t walk out your door with a pair of bins without running into one.

People birdwatch for lots of reasons. For me a lot of it is aesthetic: I just think they’re pretty to look at, and it makes me catch my breath when I see them.
The SAPH is one of my favorites. Maybe my favorite favorite. I’m not sure what it is, and this photo doesn’t do it justice. But this bird has it.
