falloutnewvegans:

i love how scientists in fiction are always called  “scientists”. thats it. they wear a Labcoat Of +5 Science and +5 Medicine. They do not specialize in a tree of science, like Biology or Astrology.

No.

They are just Science Men ready to do Science.

…or Astrology.

victorianfanguide:

‘Old Father Christmas’ painted in the late 19th century by William Ewart Lockhart. The figure of Father Christmas had been in existence in Britain since the late medieval period. Prior to the Victorian era Christmas had no particular association with children, and had instead been a time for adults to hold parties and feasts. Father Christmas was the personification of this time of making merry and was often depicted leading the revelry and surrounded by large amounts of food and drink. When the American Santa Claus (a figure created from several European traditions such as Sinterklaas and Christkind) arrived in Britain in the second half of the 19th century the two figures merged into one character. Father Christmas began to shed his previous partying image and, by the end of the Victorian period, was magically giving gifts to British children.

USFWS Maintenance Worker Roger Dutch took this photo of a Peregrine Falcon on Forsythe’s Wildlife Drive today and texted it to me with the caption, “World’s fastest bird isn’t happy about the 15 mph signs!!!

– posted by Don Freiday

“Driver’s license and registration, please. So, do you know how fast you were going?”

“I guess I wasn’t paying very close attention. Was it over 15?”

“During your stoop I clocked you at over 240 miles per hour.”

For Aragorn had been singing a part of the The Lay of Lúthien which tells of the meeting of Lúthien and Beren in the forest of Neldoreth. And behold! there Lúthien walked before his eyes in Rivendell, clad in a mantle of silver and blue, fair as the twilight in Elven-home; her dark hair strayed in a sudden wind, and her brows were bound with gems like stars.

The adventures of Selkie and her smudgy owner.

This is so far and above my most popular post, it’s weird. I mean, not really, I should know by now that the internet loves cats.

Did I miss an announcement? From some of the stuff you’ve posted, it sounds like you’re working on the Lydia novel. Are you? That would be awesome!

Crew for Leg 3 – Team SCA in the Volvo Ocean Race

Monday, December 22nd, 2014

Crew for Leg 3 – Team SCA in the Volvo Ocean Race:

As I was speculating, Sophie is off for Leg 3:

The Team SCA squad is about to start a well-earned five-day break and has today confirmed the crew line-up for Leg Three from Abu Dhabi to Sanya, China, due to start on January 3, 2015. As part of the crew ‘rotation’ for most legs, Sophie Ciszek and Liz Wardley will be standing down and Sally Barkow and Sara Hastreiter (reserves for Leg Two) will be rejoining the sailing crew for the leg.

“It is great to have Sally and Sara back onboard,” comments Sam Davies, Team SCA skipper. “Sophie is also suffering from a lumber herniated disc and will probably have a micro-disectomy later this week. This is a fairly common athletic injury and the prognosis is positive so it should be a relatively short time before she is back up to 100%.”

Monday, December 22nd, 2014

As soon as I heard what had happened to Vestas Wind, I was worried about how the experience would affect Wouter Verbraak, the boat’s navigator. Here’s the first detailed public interview he’s done since the incident, with English subtitles.

It’s still not clear if the team is going to be able to rejoin the race at a later stage with a rebuilt boat, and it’s not clear if Wouter will be offered a place on the team if they do. But I hope they do, and he is.

This could have happened to anyone. Scapegoating Wouter for an error that was as much a process failure and a software failure as it was a navigator failure would be wrong.

Blaming people doesn’t solve problems. Acknowledging mistakes and learning from them solves problems.

Off the rocks

Off the rocks:

Pretty cool. Recovering the hull means they can potentially use part of it (the deck, probably) as part of building a new boat and possibly rejoining the race at a later leg.

Rancho Monte Alegre, December 21, 2014

Like I’ve been doing for the last several years, I got permission to enter the private Rancho Monte Alegre parcel north of Carpinteria for the annual Christmas Bird Count this year. The count is next Saturday, December 27, but this afternoon I hiked in to scout the area beforehand.

I didn’t take a lot of photos, but above are a few things I noticed: The sun going down early over the Santa Barbara Channel, some Rhopalomyia californica galls in coyote brush, and tracks in the mud near a rainwater pool: a young skunk (I think? not sure if it was striped or spotted) and an adult mountain lion.

What do you think of horror movies’ new strategy for ads that kinda plays at the concept of being scary without being scary?

Sunday, December 21st, 2014

I didn’t realize that strategy existed, so I guess I hadn’t thought about it at all so far.

I guess I like it? At least I very much prefer it to actually scary ads. But if I have to rely on the horror movie advertiser to know where to draw that line I’m not sure they’re always going to draw it in a place that I’m okay with.

I guess I’ll find out.
