Vilhelm Hammershøi – Sun over the Sea [c.1902] on Flickr.

The picture leaves much open to interpretation, but both compositionally and in feel it takes on the spiritual connotations of the German Romantic landscapes painted a hundred years earlier. As in the marines and landscapes of Caspar David Friedrich, the sun may denote hope, the cross-shaped masts of the moored ships reaching for the skies a bridge between earth and heaven. Hammershøi often sought inspiration from the past, most notably from Vermeer in his interiors, and the work of the German Romantics and Danish Golden painters had a deep resonance throughout northern Germany and Scandinavia. And yet, with the uncompromisingly cropped ships and its horizontal tonal layers, Sun over the Sea is at the same time extremely modern in its conception, an aesthetic with no narrative, akin to the watery nocturnes of Hammershøi’s contemporary James McNeill Whistler whose work he so admired but to his great regret an artist he never met.

I guess I can understand someone not liking the film adaptation of Into the Woods, especially if they’re going in with an “it must be a contest with the musical” perspective.

I feel bad for people who do that. Because they’re depriving themselves of the great movie I saw today.

We attended the first showing in Santa Barbara with a packed crowd, some of whom clearly knew every line, others who had no idea what was coming.

It was a blast.

I won’t get into what my favorite parts were; I’m glad I kept myself mostly unspoiled in terms of the adaptation choices, and don’t want to take the fun away from anyone who might read this before seeing it.

Which I encourage everyone to do.

Female color perception affects evolution of male plumage in birds

The expression of a gene involved in female birds’ color vision is linked to the evolution of colorful plumage in males, reports a new study from the University of Chicago. The findings, published Nov. 26 in the Proceedings of the Royal Society B, confirm the essential role of female color perception in mate selection and sexual dimorphism.

“This is the first time an aspect of the visual system in birds has been directly associated with plumage evolution,” said Natasha Bloch, PhD, who authored the study while a graduate student in ecology & evolution at the University of Chicago. “It tells us color perception plays an important role in the evolution of the spectacular diversity of colors we see in nature.”

Striking differences in coloration between males and females are found across bird species, but the evolutionary causes of this variation are poorly understood. Female color vision and perception are thought to play a role, but measuring this behavior in the laboratory has proven difficult.

To study the link, Bloch focused on opsins – specialized proteins in the retina that are responsible for detecting light. In birds, four types of opsins contribute to color vision, each with different sensitivity ranges for certain wavelengths of light.

Bloch measured gene expression levels of these opsins in males and females from 16 species of New World warblers, a family of songbirds common across the Americas. She found that opsin expression varied greatly between species. As this is a measure of opsin abundance and density, her results suggest the species vary in their sensitivity to and ability to perceive color.

I visited the marsh this morning when it was a +6.5, which is about as full as it gets. I love it like this. All that low marsh habitat, covered by Salicornia and a dozen other species, completely inundated, transformed for a few hours into aquatic habitat, before the tide goes out and they all go back to being land plants.
