With Senate’s approval, S.D. could be first to pass transgender bathroom bill

With Senate’s approval, S.D. could be first to pass transgender bathroom bill:

ehmeegee:

This is so embarrassing. Why does my home state only ever make the news when it’s doing something discriminatory and shameful? Growing up with a liberal mindset in a place as conservative as South Dakota was exceedingly challenging – in school, I felt surrounded by hatred and hostility for the unfamiliar and unknown. I can’t fathom the sort of fear my classmates who struggled with gender identity or sexual orientation must have harbored. This is a sad perpetuation, a wrongful confirmation to fearful people that their perverse interest in what’s going on under someone’s clothes is any business at all of theirs.

South Dakota is a beautiful state with a rich and complicated history, but it’s difficult to speak kindly of it as a whole when it regurgitates such a lack of compassion under the guise of protection.

“THE BUZZARDS: Production designer Colin Gibson describes more of the theory behind the Buzzard…”

Monday, July 6th, 2015

THE BUZZARDS:

Production designer Colin Gibson describes more of the theory behind the Buzzard tribe. “The Buzzards are basically vultures. They’re a pack of hyenas. If you build a world full of carrion, the hyena and the vulture will circle. And the difference with them is, they have much baser needs, because they were after just material, the crude mechanics, the very stuff of things. They didn’t see a Cadillac, [the Buzzards] saw metal; not man, but meat. George had the theory that they were Russian and I think maybe they were White Russian and way too white – their bodies were ravaged by impetigo and infection. They were suppurating flesh and peeling skin, held in place with Saran Wrap and bandage. It was just a little too moist in this dry and dirty place, so they hid inside the spiky vehicles. They were spiky as much to keep people away from them as for attack. The anthropomorphic treatment worked both on the front and the back, there was a sense of trying to find vehicles that had eyes, that we could add a grinning grille of mouth to, that the radiator could look like braces on an inbred mouth.

THE ROCK RIDERS:

Gibson relates, “If the Buzzards are the hunters of carrion, then the Rock Riders are the hunters just pre-mortem. They have a path through which you must go, which brings you in single file, basically turns you into easy pickings. Their system of attack is obviously, if I live high, then I need to be able to move up and down. So we decided they were two-wheeled parkour artists. Certain motorbikes are built for this.

Kids on the internet are so darned smart. Can’t slip anything past them.

In related news, my son has informed me that Emilia Clark laughing and pointing at her laptop screen is a meme. The original:

image

What’s a meme??

Per Wikipedia:

A meme (/ˈmiːm/ meem)[1] is “an idea, behavior, or style that spreads from person to person within a culture”.[2] A meme acts as a unit for carrying cultural ideas, symbols, or practices that can be transmitted from one mind to another through writing, speech, gestures, rituals, or other imitable phenomena with a mimicked theme. Supporters of the concept regard memes as cultural analogues to genes in that they self-replicate, mutate, and respond to selective pressures.[3]

Or more specifically in the current case, Internet meme:

An Internet meme (/ˈmiːm/ meem) is an activity, concept, catchphrase or piece of media which spreads, often as mimicry, from person to person via the Internet.[1] Some notable examples include posting a photo of people lying down in public places (called “planking”) and uploading a short video of people dancing to the Harlem Shake.

Or even still yet more specifically: The image of Emilia Clarke laughing at poor Jon Snow, which I did not immediately recognize as photoshoppery, but which my son did, proving that being older doesn’t make one wiser, at least not in my particular patrilineal line:

You’d think I’d have learned enough to stop being taken in by droll knavery on the Internet, but not so far. I can only say,

cumaeansibyl:

we, uh, went to see Fury Road again

that’s six times for me (I had errands last week that took me by a movie theater so I stopped in and saw it alone)

we discussed various awards the movie could be up for on the way back and who their competition would be, and I literally forgot the new Star Wars was coming out this year because I’ve basically forgotten any movie exists except Fury Road

okay, and Jurassic World, but Fury Road doesn’t have dinosaurs which is possibly its only flaw and now I REALLY wanna see George Miller’s Jurassic Park

anyway we think there’s an outside chance of it picking up a Best Picture nomination – it was a smash hit at Cannes and universally beloved by critics – and of course it should win all the technical awards

also if Sigourney Weaver could get a nomination for Aliens then it’s not impossible for Charlize Theron to get one for this

but, of course, the Oscars are SUPER MEGA BULLSHIT so who knows, tech’ll probably get swept by fucking Tomorrowland or some bullshit

Loving the ‘platypus’

Yup, not a platypus and that African pygmy falcon is fully grown. Cute pics tho.

If you’ve ever wondered when Jupiter will next be aligned with Mars, Van Cleef & Arpels has a watch that will tell you. Its new Midnight Planetarium Poetic Complication watch has six rotating disks, each bearing a tiny sphere representing one of the six planets visible with the naked eye.

The disks rotate at different speeds so that each sphere makes one revolution around the dial in the time it takes the actual planet it represents – Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter or Saturn – to orbit the sun.  Mercury in 88 days, Venus in 224, Earth in a year, Mars in 687 days, Jupiter in 12 years and Saturn in 29. It’s a very complex watch and a true display of supreme watchmaking. Time is indicated by a shooting-star symbol rotating around the dial’s circumference. Leveraging the brand’s specialty in jewelry, each of the planets are represented by precious and semi-precious stones, ranging from red jasper to serpentine and turquoise. An even more extravagant edition is available with baguette-cut diamonds set into the bezel.

The planet module was designed by Christian van der Klaauw, renowned for his movements featuring astronomical indications. The movement is self-winding and contains 396 components.  The case is 44 mm in diameter and made of rose gold. The dial is made of aventurine and the planets of semiprecious stones.  Price: about $245,000; a diamond-set version will be about $330,000. repost from moonfall-requiem

This is excellent and important.

And I might mention that in our Orwellian nation, where refugees are called “queue jumpers” and “illegals”, I have a specific problem with the term “detention centre”. One can detain someone for days, or for health quarantine reasons plausibly for some weeks; but beyond that, it is imprisonment, plain and simple.
