I was very confused by this until I realized you were talking about Pokemon.

Happy to have added some mystery to your day! 😀

Two words I would prefer never to see near each other again. Frege and fandom.

Oh; hm. You may want to avoid this blog this coming Sunday at 8 a.m. PDT, then. Because I may have queued something you will find… bothersome.

I’m glad you’re calling! I haven’t called Elizabeth Warren’s office because we all know where she stands in this mess. But I feel like calling and pushing for impeachment is good. Although people with Rep need to push hard because it won’t happen w/o Rep rebelling.

Good luck with your storm. And good luck to us all with the nor’easter bearing down on the republic.

My real worry re: Trump vs. Pence? Pence will actually get things done. Trump is lazy and inept and just wants to stir shit up. I think your worry is valid and all of that worries me too. But I think there is some chance Trump is actually the lesser of two evils. I don’t think he believes most of what he says. (Not sure he believes in anything but himself) and Pence does. But South Korea could probably easily provoke Trump into doing something idiotic. It’s all bad.

Yeah. Of course, it’s not enough to assess the odds of whether [redacted] might turn out to be a lesser evil; one also has to deal with the relative consequences of the ways in which each might turn out to be evil.

On the theory that his incompetence could mean he’ll just fail, including failing at doing objectively bad things, yeah, that could be a silver lining. On the other hand, I believe the federal government has important things to do that are in the public interest. If an incompetent administration could be relied on only to fuck up the bad things while still achieving the good I’d be a lot happier about their capacity for failure.

A year or so ago, in the midst of Bernie fever, I was talking to husband about the possibility of Trump as president and I estimated the likelihood of him using nukes in a 4 year term as about 20%. Now, with more information, I can’t help but feel that was conservative. So yeah, they should impeach.

Yeah. I don’t mean to over-simplify things; the ways in which stuff could go horribly wrong are a continuum, not an evenly cleaving pair of apocalyptic-vs.-merely-horrible. And I also don’t want to immediately jump to predictions of the worst possible outcome. There will be many much more mundane battles to be fought either way. But at least for me, the way I’m thinking today, I’d take President Pence in return for keeping He Who Can’t Be Named as far away from power as possible.

Not that it’s a choice I’m likely to have any time soon. This is just me working through my personal value system as I try to process what’s happening.

chilling.

In thematically related news, it’s finally getting cold at night after that unseasonal warm spell we were having. I hope you, Poppet, and Widget are keeping warm.

I wasn’t complaining. I kind of like seeing the little colored boats zooming around cutting each other off. I don’t actually follow it, but there’s something pleasant about the graphics. I was just surprised the race was still happening. I didn’t know they were this long.

Tuesday, February 24th, 2015

Ah, whew. Thanks for letting me know.

Yeah, it’s a long race. Pretty much the longest in the history of racing, I guess. Though there also are singlehanded versions like the Vendée Globe, where a solo sailor does it, and does it nonstop, which I suppose is arguably “longer”, for some definitions.

Interestingly (at least for me, given my current obsession with the performance of SCA), women have a history of doing quite well in the Vendée Globe. Ellen MacArthur came in second in the 2000-2001 race (to Michel Desjoyeaux, who sailed in this Volvo on MAPFRE on leg 1 before leaving the team). And then Sam Davies and Dee Caffari, both currently on SCA, came in fourth and sixth respectively (out of 30 entrants) in the 2008-2009 race, which also was won by Desjoyeaux.

The Tao that can be mangled is not the eternal Tao, so I think technically the answer would be no. But yeah; I apologize if that was offensive.

regarding misinformation reblogged on tumblr

Wednesday, August 14th, 2013

imaginarycircus:

Obviously we’ll never be able to post perfectly sound advice or accurate news stories 100% of the time, but it doesn’t hurt to double check your sources. It only takes a moment.

If your article if from The Onion it is satire. No one actually ate those babies/stole plutonium to make a Frankestein type monster/whatever ridiculous thing. (Girl ignorantly complaining about Anne Frank because of Justin Beiber for instance.)

For missing persons posts—Google the person’s name to see if they have already been found. Most times they have. If you can add a status and date to your reblog? That’s helpful. I usually add “Still missing as of today’s date.” Or “Found on date.”

If your story source is a blog post and not a news source—you may want to note that the story may be highly biased, inaccurate, or made up. (Of course that happens with legit news sources too. Grain of salt. Being able to find more than one source for a story helps.) And let’s face it—I get news from Twitter and Tumblr more quickly than the New York Times or the BBC. I think the accuracy ratio is maybe 50% for Twitter though, especially as an event is unfolding. (Avoids discussion on nature of truth.)

Medical or emergency information should be verified. Posting the wrong things to do when someone is having a heart attack or the wrong number to call during an emergency doesn’t help anyone. And I think most of you genuinely want to help other people.

I’ve definitely made the error of trying to post resources for disasters and conflicts and found a problematic source or organization because I didn’t understand the situation or didn’t research carefully enough.

You can verify a lot of anecdotes that advise you how to avoid various terrible things through Snopes.com.

We’ll all make errors and that’s OK. It happens, but it’s worth taking 30 seconds and Googling before you reblog.

Oh, good point. I didn’t notice that. Yeah, I suspect it’s a typo by Jane. Her previous “ask” responses appear to have been tagged “aoje asks”. And now it looks like this one has been fixed, too.
