Tags: birds, so, you know, in which case, there it is, alhu, the original poster tags them rufous hummingbird, but I think these are mostly probably allen's, the difference is kind of academic, and there are allen'ses with green backs, but I think I saw something that indicated, the op is in socal?, prolly allen's by date and location, not just by plumage pattern, none of this matters here, but I'm kind of a must-ID-all-photos-to-species person, in summary: enjoy your lovely Selasphorus sp. birb, who doesn't care at all, what label some especially nerdy categorizers, assign to him. Tags: birds, alhu, though if i were ebirding, i’d enter it, as rufous/allen’s, b/c the females/juveniles, which this one is, are very hard to distinguish in the field, and even though, we only get a lot of rufouses, during spring migration, theyre still _possible_ the rest of the year, and rather thsn have a date-specific rule, i just enter them all as rufous/allen’s, and call it a day. Tags: birds, and in conclusion, alhu, it's an amazing shot, those both appear to be females, hence it's unlikely the pictured behavior is literally a mating dance, though the females do defend a territory, which is part of their child-rearing strategy, so that's at least mating-adjacent behavior, i'm probably taking the caption way too seriously, this is a great photo, and allen's hummingbirds are great birds.
