On the northwest Belgian coast, there is a little known tradition: shrimp fishing on horseback.

The activity consists of what its name describes: fishing shrimp on a horse.

In the 15th century, shrimp fishing on horseback was still practised on the North Sea coasts in France, the Netherlands and even the South of England. This activity represented an extra revenue needed for the household. Nowadays there is only one place in which it is still ongoing: Oostduinkerke, a sub-municipality of the municipality of Koksijde.

I forgot to mention the birds I saw on my little walk! There were definitely some house finches, but they were accompanied by some birds of the same size with yellow bellies and, maybe, black caps. They were flitting around and hanging out on a wire above me so I didn’t get a good look at the whole bird. Goldfinches of some sort? (@lies?)

I think goldfinches are an excellent guess. Check out Lesser Goldfinch and American Gokdfinch; both are possibilities.

Also, as a side note: I love the idea of vacuuming as an heroic act.

Calicium tigillare

Do you ever get that eerie feeling that you’re being watched? Maybe it’s not eyes that are in you, but the eerily eye-like apothecia of C. tigillare. This crustose lichen forms a variable crust of yellowish-green verrucae (wart-like protuberances). Black apotehcia are immersed in the verrucae, and pycnidia can be scattered or aggregated. C. tigillare prefers to grow on hard, dry, weathered wood, and often colonizes fence posts. It is found in boreal-montane habitats world-wide. The color of this lichen comes from rhizocarpic acid, a secondary metabolite pigment which serves as protection from UV radiation. A nice, safe friend who is maybe watching you!

This has been a thing I’ve noticed with the online birdwatching classes we’ve started doing. It’s not just talking about birds. It’s talking about birds with other people who share that interest and being able to SEE EACH OTHER ENJOYING IT while we’re doing it.

Thursday at 4 Pacific we’re doing tanagers and orioles. It’s gonna be colorful.
