Ulalume – Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The identity of Ulalume in the poem is uncertain. Poe scholar and distant relative Harry Lee Poe says it is autobiographical and shows Poe’s grief over the recent death of his wife Virginia.^[8] Scholar Scott Peeples notes that “Ulalume” serves as a sequel to “The Raven”.^[9] Poetically, the name Ulalume emphasizes the letter L, a frequent device in Poe’s female characters such as “Annabel Lee”, “Eulalie”, and “Lenore”.^[10] If it really stands for a deceased love, Poe’s choosing to refer to Ulalume as “the thing” and “the secret” do not seem endearing terms.^[11] In one possible view, Ulalume may be representative of death itself.^[11]

It’s a Rock Wren! I posted a cool photo of one in my initial attempt at a reply, but Tumblr’s spectacularly inept adult-content algorithm decided that its plumage is too similar to naked-human skintones? Or something? And put it in quarantine.

Sometimes when I’m birdwatching

The Painted Ladies are migrating; according to news articles something like a billion butterflies are currently flying north through coastal southern California. At work in Playa Vista yesterday I went to the Starbucks on Jefferson and while waiting for my order I looked out the window and counted butterflies. I estimated twice, and got roughly 200 per minute flying through the intersection. They seemed to come in waves that corresponded to the traffic signals; I think the butterflies are smart enough not to cross against LA traffic. Or maybe it’s an effect of the wind the cars and trucks make, and the butterflies are just being carried along?

Back in Carp today I hiked the Franklin Trail at lunch and watched the same migration. This Painted Lady paused to refuel from the Blue Dicks blossoms in the Thomas Fire burn scar.
