Thursday, May 28th, 2015

“I can’t speak to whether or not the film is truly feminist — that’s for smarter and more impacted people than I am to decide. But you have a world where the men are either all-brutal or half-useless, and are made more “human” by their contact with women. Women in this are generative creatures, the keepers of the future, the civilizing force. They’re the ones who get shit done and who will change the world. The men can either get in line, or they can get fucked.”

tomthefanboy:

“One of the “Five Wives” named “Capable” is portrayed by Riley Keough, the daughter of Lisa Marie Presley and musician Danny Keough, as well as the eldest granddaughter of Elvis and Priscilla Presley. She made her film debut via 2010’s “The Runaways”, a biographical drama based on the 1970s all-girl rock band of the same name. She also portrayed a stripper in the original “Magic Mike” movie. She then began dating her “Magic Mike” co-star Alex Pettyfer and became briefly engaged to him.

On 14th August 2014, the actress took to Facebook to announce her engagement to Ben Smith-Petersen, a stuntman who portrays Coma the Doof Warrior aka the blind guitarist (played by Sean Hape) as seen in Miller’s movie. The 2 met on set of “Mad Max: Fury Road”, which began filming in 2012.

yulinisworking:

thinking out loud | Week 7 | my second kiss

I appear to have fallen out of practice with these! I’ve been reading my old diaries, I used to write in them daily from 2000-2008 (about absolutely NOTHING, half of the entries are just transcripts of the world’s most inane conversations) and I decided to get in touch with an old friend I’d fallen out of contact with after we both went to college.

Apologies for cropping myself out so much towards the end here, I didn’t realize I was slipping out of frame!

THINKING OUT LOUD is a series project attempting to capture weekly* visual snippets of what’s on my mind for a full year.

*But I am not so great at that weekly part as it turns out. I will try and be better. I have not yet given up on this series, but I have reconciled myself with the fact that I’m just not great at regular schedules.

Much love,

I was trying to explain this page to Linda, and said wait; I’ll show you. So I pulled it up and was reading the reviews out loud to her, and this one I failed to get through three times because I kept losing it at “FOR CERTAIN”.

Thursday, May 28th, 2015

“Who knows whether, when a comet shall approach this globe to destroy it, as it often has been and will be destroyed, men will not tear rocks from their foundations by means of steam, and hurl mountains, as the giants are said to have done, against the falling mass? – and then we shall have traditions of Titans again, and of wars with Heaven.”

Wednesday, May 27th, 2015

The Volvo trans-Atlantic Leg 7 finish was at sunrise this morning Lisbon time/late last night California time. All six boats finished within 4 hours of each other, with the order being: Brunel, MAPFRE, Alvimedica, Dongfeng, ADOR, SCA. Winds got super light in the last few miles, which made things interesting, especially in the battle for third place.

Dongfeng was solidly in third as they approached the land, but Alvimedica got better wind close to shore and managed to pass them. Then in the final beat to the finish under the boats’ masthead Code 0 headsails, Dongfeng initiated a tacking duel. Alvimedica had a poor tack that allowed Dongfeng to escape into better wind, and for a moment it looked like Dongfeng had retaken third place.

It was significant for the overall race standings, because Dongfeng is the closest to overall leader ADOR, so every boat they could put between themselves and ADOR would help them close the gap.

With one final tack to make for the finish line, though, Dongfeng had a disastrous tack that left them in irons, allowing Alvimedica to regain their lead and finish in third place a few minutes later. The live coverage missed the crucial moment when the problem occurred on Dongfeng, but they were getting live audio from my man-crush Yann Riou at the time, and it was heart-breaking to hear him describe what was happening. (Also hard to listen to was skipper Charles Caudrelier screaming in frustration.)

You can use this link to go straight to the climax:

Overall standings (low-point scoring) with two (short) legs remaining:

  1. ADOR: 16 pts
  2. Dongfeng: 21
  3. Brunel: 22
  4. MAPFRE: 26
  5. Alvimedica: 27
  6. SCA: 41
  7. Vestas: 52

The Vuvalini | A Working Library

Wednesday, May 27th, 2015

The Vuvalini | A Working Library:

There’s been some discussion of whether or not Fury Road is a feminist film, whether its unabashed celebration of violence and death preclude that label, or whether its admittedly extreme presentation of misogyny and literal smash-the-patriarchy plot device make it too facile to perform feminism. I’ll confess I’m not moved by either argument: feminism, like any political viewpoint, can be just as capably communicated via hyperbole as more subtle forms. And while feminism and non-violence have a long history, feminism is hardly a subset of pacifism—one does not need to be a pacifist in order to be a feminist. Not to mention that any work of art sufficiently good enough to warrant criticism is likely to be complicated enough that a straight up declaration of “yes, this is feminist” or “no, it isn’t” won’t be trivial.

The more interesting question is not whether or not the film is feminist but whether it furthers feminism: whether, via plot or character or camera it furthers the ideas of feminism.

To that I answer a resounding yes.

I need to point this out because nobody else is.

Look at Furiosa’s top.

image

Look how it looks like wrapping. How it’s layered like strips. Compare that to Max’s shirts, the clothes of the Wretched, single pieced.

image

Look at the fabric.

image

By gosh, I wonder where she’d get fabric like that.

Hmmm…
