National Geographic’s Photo of the Day for September 13, 2012. Reblogging this (again) with the caption because I remember how long I spent the first time it came through my dash trying to decide if it was a photo or a painting.

I love these flowers, does anyone know the species?

I’m not a plant expert, but these look a lot like mariposa lily or sego lily, Calochortus nuttallii, the state flower of Utah. I see them in the eastern Sierra sometimes, and always have to stop and admire them, because seriously; just look at those things. They’re ridiculous.

15 Myths About Anti-Vaxxers, Debunked — Part 1 – Forbes

lies:

Good stuff if you want to be concerned about the actual problem, rather than manipulated by misinformation into outrage that does more harm than good.

YES
Maybe people will actually read this and stop stereotyping those of us who think that vaccinating against mostly harmless stuff like the chickenpox is a dumb idea.

I’m encouraged by your positive response to part 1 of Ms. Haelle’s article. Part 2 is now online, and since you clearly think for yourself and want to make good choices about your children’s health, I think you would find it interesting.

On the specific point about chickenpox, the main argument for vaccination is not that the vaccinated child benefits greatly, since as you point out contracting chickenpox as a school-aged child is usually not a big deal. For people like me who grew up before chickenpox vaccination began, we almost all had chickenpox. It was itchy and not fun, but we got over it in a few days.

An important benefit of the vaccine, though, is to reduce the presence of the highly contagious virus in the population, thereby protecting people for whom it poses greater risk: babies, adolescents, adults, pregnant women, and people with weakened immune systems. Before vaccination, between 10,500 and 13,000 people were hospitalized each year, and 100 to 150 died, because of chickenpox. Widespread vaccination has reduced those numbers.

I don’t think you’re evil not to vaccinate your children for chickenpox, and I think it would be counterproductive to try to force you to do so. But I encourage you to think carefully about the issue, and to consider information like that on this page at the Centers for Disease Control before you make up your mind.

Francis Davis Millet painted The Widow sometime before 1891.

As the title implies, it depicts a widow—still in black—at dinner with her daughter.

She sits well back from the table, the other end (where her husband would presumably have sat) not even visible beyond the edge of the painting. Her clasped hands and distance from her plate suggest that she’s lost her appetite, although the table bears a lovely silver bowl of fruit.

Yay! The pink boat has friends again! (And the orange boat is pissed.)

Here’s the last day and a half in the tracker. The boats are working their way toward the equator, and though they haven’t reached the doldrums proper they’ve started encountering big convection clouds that suck up the wind, handing out gains and losses on a more or less random basis.

Brunel, having cashed in their northerly gauge to get in front of the fleet, still leads, with ADOR and Alvimedica doing their best to catch them.

Toward the back the three trailing boats have taken a more northerly line. So far it hasn’t done them much good, but who knows?

The big news for me is that SCA is back in contact with some other boats. They’re right on the edge of AIS range with Mapfre ahead of them and Dongfeng behind. It’s a great opportunity for them to get continuous feedback and raise their boatspeed game. Go SCA!

But aboard Dongfeng, being in last place for the first time in the race does not sit well. In the latest video from the boat we see the latest in a string of gear problems (the mainsail track is pulling away from the mast, like what happened to them on leg 2 but higher up). Add that to the big cloud that stomped on them early in the gif animation above, and things really haven’t gone their way. Sam got a shot of Charles banging his hand on the binnacle and cursing that I don’t think was staged; and in his (Sam’s) latest blog post he writes:

Today feels like we’re strapped in the back seat of the family wagon on a road trip to … the bottom of the world.

It’s been a long trip because dad took a wrong turn. Then we got a flat. The radiator overheated and now we’re praying mom will do something miraculous.

Like calm down dad.

Hey guys, I’m looking for book recommendations. I read to my husband a lot and we don’t have anything to read at the moment.

Previous books include: Anne of Green Gables, Pride and Prejudice and Carpe Jugulum. So, I’m looking for something funny and probably about kickass women and easy to read aloud. (And it’s gotta be something I can get from my local library.)

Suggestions?

Yo, not enough people responded to this. Please help. You all like books. I know you do.

Hm. I don’t recall if I actually made this recommendation the first time around, or just thought of making it, but you could read Fangirl to him. It’s funny and there’s a kickass woman or two and the “girl reading aloud to boy” part would be so meta that it makes me happy just thinking about it.

Watching Sherlock reminds me that Rupert Graves sang this adorable nonsense song in A Room with a View – one of my all-time favourite films.

‘However, we’re in E flat.’ ;)

It’s from Gilbert & Sullivan’s The Story of Prince Agib. The way the song is used in this particular scene I reckon serves to goad Lucy and anticipate Upcoming Events, LoL. ‘Let the piano’s martial blast / Rouse the echoes of the past’ – which is totally about to happen once Freddy invites George Emerson over to Slashy Corner for tennis…

Ooh, that’s one of my favorite parts of the movie, and I had no idea the song was from G&S. Also reblogging for Freddy’s floppy hair, of course.

Small correction: The Story of Prince Agib is one of W.S. Gilbert’s Bab Ballads. Arthur Sullivan was not involved.

(I assumed Lies would be on top of this.)

Alas, I was remiss. But if failing to catch the spurious Sullivan attribution is what it takes to pull you out of bloggy lurkdom, I’m glad for the error. :-)

New Jersey judge rules homosexuality isn’t a disease, so conversion therapy is fraud

Tuesday, February 17th, 2015

New Jersey judge rules homosexuality isn’t a disease, so conversion therapy is fraud:

gaywrites:

A New Jersey Superior Court judge ruled this week that homosexuality is not a disorder, disease or mental illness, and as a result, therapists who claim to offer conversion therapy are committing acts of consumer fraud.

This is the first time a U.S. court has ever affirmed that homosexuality is not a disease. It’s part of a consumer fraud lawsuit filed by the Southern Poverty Law Center against Jews Offering New Alternatives for Healing (JONAH), a group that claims to offer anti-gay conversion therapy services.

“This ruling is monumental and devastating to the conversion therapy industry,” said David Dinielli, SPLC deputy legal director. “For the first time, a court has ruled that it is fraudulent as a matter of law for conversion therapists to tell clients that they have a mental disorder that can be cured. This is the principal lie the conversion therapy industry uses throughout the country to peddle its quackery to vulnerable clients. Gay people don’t need to be cured, and we are thrilled that the court has recognized this.”
The judge also ruled that JONAH is in violation of the Consumer Fraud Act if it offers specific success statistics for its services when “client outcomes are not tracked and no records of client outcomes are maintained” because “there is no factual basis for calculating such statistics.” Evidence at the upcoming trial this summer will show that JONAH has misrepresented that their conversion therapy works based on bogus statistics.
“The judge’s determination today that it is a misrepresentation to tell consumers that homosexuality is a disorder is an important step forward in this case and also a victory for showing that conversion therapy proponents lack any valid basis to continue to promote their abusive practices,” said SPLC co-counsel James L. Bromley, a partner at Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton LLP. “The harmful myth that gay people are sick or damaged belongs in the dustbin of history.”

That last sentence, though.
