Francis Davis Millet painted The Widow sometime before 1891.

As the title implies, it depicts a widow—still in black—at dinner with her daughter.

She sits well back from the table, the other end (where her husband would presumably have sat) not even visible beyond the edge of the painting. Her clasped hands and distance from her plate suggest that she’s lost her appetite, although the table bears a lovely silver bowl of fruit.
