Wednesday, July 30th, 2014

Queen stealing the show at Live Aid was one of those events that, even though I was on the other side of the world watching on TV, I remember like I was there.

My list of “I’m watching something big and important that I’ll always remember and that I’ll share with millions of other people who were similarly affected” events is actually pretty short. I’ve got:

Neil Armstrong stepping onto the moon
The Iranian hostages coming home on Reagan’s Inauguration Day
The Challenger explosion
Queen at Live Aid
Bernard Shaw broadcasting from the Al-Rashid hotel at the start of the Gulf War
9/11
Curiosity landing on Mars

So that’s 7 events in ~49 years (not dividing by my actual age of 52, since I wasn’t aware for the first few years or I’d probably be listing the assassination of JFK). If epochal events continue to happen at the same rate and nothing takes me out early, I can expect to experience another 3 or so; maybe 4 or 5 with a little luck.

I wonder what they’ll be.

Three years today since my dad died. Shame he never knew me as an adult (I was 19) because I’m a bloody great one. He died of a sudden, out-of-nowhere stroke while I was at VidCon and he was at home in London. He was out of it straight after but still kind of there and then he died a couple of days later. 1 in 5 strokes are fatal & annually, worldwide, approx 15 million people have a stroke. To help work towards making these statistics less depressing, read up on The Stroke Association here: http://ift.tt/10VqmBL

Rosianna is a bloody good adult.

Rosianna was one of the first readers of Looking for Alaska, has been a nerdfighter since the very first vlogbrothers video was uploaded, and now works as my assistant (although that job title rather underplays her importance to me and to the nerdfighter community).

Three years ago today, she became the first teenager ever to read The Fault in Our Stars. Her dad had just died, and she was stuck at Vidcon. I never imagined then that she would become such a bloody good adult, or that she’d become such a close friend and collaborator.

But I have always known Rosianna to be a person of excellent judgement, blistering intelligence, and great competence. And while I know that her dad would have so much to be proud of today, he had much to be proud of then as well.

Since you, and other similar blogs, get so irritated with deleting the text, I’ve decided to stop. I don’t want anyone to hate my blog. But I think you shouldn’t be so quick to judge blogs that value “aesthetic”. Not everyone goes to art museums to read the descriptions and become educated. Some people like to go to just be immersed in a beautiful experience. To feel something. I don’t think tumblr is any different.

Forgive me, but I really don’t buy that excuse. If someone has typed something up to go with an image, no matter how short or long it is, the person reblogging it should leave it there. If you don’t like it, don’t reblog it. If all you want is a pretty blog with no words, then by all means, go do that. But people shouldn’t be taking posts made by others and deleting what they’ve written.

I’ve had this problem not only on this blog (as well as text stealing, copying/pasting, etc…) but my main blog, where I post MY photos that I have taken, and people have deleted the credit, my comments, or bits research that I’ve added. So I’m sorry, but I’m not going to sit by and be okay with someone deleting what I’ve written and reblogging it. I can’t stand it when I see it on my blogs, and I hate when I see it happen to others too.

what about horror movie ads is a felony?

Tuesday, July 29th, 2014

That Tumblr shows horror movie ads with creepy animated gifs inline in my dashboard drives me up a wall. It hasn’t happened to me in a while, and they did switch to using tags in the posts (like #gif #horror #movies), which helps some. And the ones I’ve seen lately have seemed a little tamer than the batch that was bothering me last year.

You can read the posts I’ve made in the #sponsored posts tag for more details about how much this bugs me, if you’re so inclined.

This just popped up on my dashboard with all of my text removed. Can’t be sure who did it, but somewhere along the way I guess someone reblogging it thought that was okay. But guys, please don’t. Really. Not to my posts, or to anyone you reblog from. It’s lame, it’s not cool, and no one likes it.

I was wondering… You catch these bugs by just picking them up with your hands?? Or…? Because if that is true then HOLY CRAP YOU ARE SO BRAVE! D: I love your blog btw <3

Monday, July 28th, 2014

Ha.  Thank you.  But it’s not really bravery.  Most insects and spiders are completely harmless. BUT there are definitely a handful I would not pick up with my bare hands.  So, unless you know what you’re handling, using caution with any unknown animal is important.  Most animals will not waste precious energy (ie venom, biting etc..) unless provoked.  Most of people’s fears about insects/spiders is based on a learned fear.

Everyday Astronaut by Tim Dodd

Dodd on his project:

In November of 2013, I found myself the lone bidder of a Russian high altitude space suit on an auction website called RRauction. Since then, I’d been scheming how to best use the suit. I have been revisiting my childhood love for space and my obsession was growing stronger and stronger. It was only natural to use this suit to project the inner child in me, still dreaming about space. With that, I present to you: “A day in the life of Everyday Astronaut”

I sometimes set up a tent in my living room for fort parties.

Through most of Pacific Rim, I just kept thinking of jaegers. These sure are classy-looking, graceful birds, even if they are kleptoparasites.

We all do what we have to do to live. We still can be classy-looking while we do it.
