Eleanor and her walkman, from Eleanor and Park by Rainbow Rowell. I love this book. So much. As we say in Tumblr Land, all the feels. All the feels.

I may perhaps be reading it for the third time in two weeks. And listening to The Smiths incessantly.

If you think I don’t get all teary and weird EVERY SINGLE TIME someone posts Eleanor & Park fan art … you are wrong.

JESUS CHRIST, PEOPLE, HOW DID YOU GET SO TALENTED?

AND WHY ARE SO BEAUTIFUL INSIDE?

ARE YOU TRYING TO BREAK MY HEART?

NES systems had built in televisions. “We felt it was one of the most important aspects of the console,” said system creator and company founder David Rosen, “But nobody ever tried opening them and despite numerous diagrams in Nintendo Power, word just never got out”.

A++++

I wonder how many people actually believe this.

A lot of them by looking at the notes. I mean: a) tvs were fucking huge back then, and b) the OP’s url is facts i just made up. Really, people.

That would be an interesting use of the ‘lies’ URL. I could just start posting outrageously untrue things, and see who notices.

Review: The Lizzie Bennet Diaries

Thursday, March 28th, 2013

I’ve loved Jane Austen ever since watching the 1995 BBC miniseries of Pride and Prejudice with my mother when I was 14. I studied her in school, read her for pleasure, even joined the local chapter of the Jane Austen Society for a while. So when I heard about “The Lizzie Bennet Diaries,” I knew I’d end up watching the show and having a bunch of nitpicky opinions about it.

Falling in deep daydreamy love and then getting into big arguments and losing sleep over the show – that was unexpected.

Short version: It was worth the effort and I had a lot of fun.

Ridiculously long version, aka The Good, The Bad and the Awesome:

The Good

  • Building the story around careers, the economic crisis and the housing bubble was extremely clever. It got right to the heart of Jane Austen’s commentary on marriage and entailment of property – particularly Charlotte taking a job with Mr Collins instead of marrying him.
  • The initial concepts for the modernised characters were great. They either translated smoothly from the original (sweet Jane, old-fashioned Darcy, party girl Lydia) or contrasted in a way that was interesting or funny (snarky Lizzie, career-minded Charlotte, emo chick Mary, Kitty the cat).

You know that annoying thing when the little kid asks “why?” and the grownup gives an answer and the little kid just asks “why?” again?

I’m the little kid. You’re the grownup.

Why do you want the URL?

Persuasion: The Next LBD?

Thursday, March 28th, 2013

icecreamramblings:

Having just recently gotten into Austen (I’ve only read P&P, Persuasion, half of Emma, and Sandition), I don’t have a huge amount of knowledge about many of Austen’s works. Still, I do think that Persuasion would be an ideal candidate for a vlog-style adaptation in the spirit of the Lizzie Bennet Diaries.

This got obscenely long, so it’s under the cut.

This mostly makes sense to me. I don’t necessarily agree with the people I’ve seen saying that Clueless precludes Pemberley Digital adapting Emma; Clueless came out 18 years ago, which at least in my mind is plenty long enough for another adaptation to be done. There were only 10 years between the BBC miniseries and the Joe Wright adaptation of Pride and Prejudice, after all, and those were necessarily a lot closer together as straight period adaptations than 200-years-later updates of Emma would be.

But I love Persuasion, and really like the way this post outlines how it could be updated. A reality series rather than a vlog sounds more expensive to produce, but not necessarily too expensive; a reality show would still be cheaper than conventional TV, and would solve a whole list of problems that Bernie Su & Co. spent the last year wrestling with. (Just how many times can someone pop by unexpectedly and sit down next to Lizzie just as she’s recording her vlog?)

I read this scene to my friend, just those two lines—and this is how she interpreted it.

im so sorry i love this story so much really

This should NOT have made me laugh.

And yet it DID.

(P.S. These aren’t the three words.)

Haha.

Okay. Things I know now:

  • Rainbow Rowell knows the three words.
  • Rainbow Rowell is willing, at least under certain circumstances, to reveal what the three words aren’t.

If only she were an unmonitored daemon, I could write a script to brute-force its way through a dictionary attack that in a decade or two would allow me to figure this out. Yay!

But she’s not an unmonitored daemon, so I guess I’m back to thinking about the book and the characters to infer what the three words probably were, while waiting for the much-to-be-desired sequel that presumably will help resolve that mystery, while no doubt introducing new ones.

That works too. :-)

Julia is going to watch the genderswap episode with me soon. I’m looking forward to it.

Also, for the record: She owns Fiona’s hat, and was wearing it non-ironically (well, as far as I could tell) the last time I saw her.

That makes me proud.

Hey, okay. I seriously want your URL so badly. Could i possibly have it? if not thats alright. I would be willing to promo you many of times if you gave it to me, that way you could gain more followers:)

Wednesday, March 27th, 2013

I’m unlikely to give it up anytime soon, but I’m open to discussing the idea. Are you one of the people I’ve previously corresponded with about it? Or are you someone I haven’t spoken with before?

I’m curious why you want this URL so badly. How will your situation change if you have it?

Regardless of how this turns out, I want to say it’s a real pleasure being asked in such a polite manner. Thanks.

‘You’re- you’re teasing right? Right?’

‘We have to go!’

Thank you, person who pointed out that since this was shot after 100, the literal final words of the series are: “We have to go.”

I was curious about which episode was actually shot last, and meant to ask but never got around to it. Cool.

is my own post allowed to make me cry?

Definitely. (If you’re Erin, it’s actually required by the terms of your narcissism contract.)

Side note: I sent an ask to Ashley, and she was nice enough to write back to me that actually, the last thing they shot was the last take for episode 99 (which was the take they used).

So this bit from Q&A 10 must actually have been filmed earlier (though I still like that, conceptually, it’s kind of the bookend to the series). And I guess whatever we’re going to get tomorrow in episode 100 must also have been taped before episode 99.

My guess is that since episode 100 features Lydia they taped that sometime relatively early on the final-shoot day, along with the Caroline episode (95), so those actors could be freed up. Then they probably did the Charlotte+Darcy episode (97), then maybe Q&A 10, then the rest of the Lizzie+Darcy episodes (96, 98 and 99).

But that’s just guessing. All I really know (from Ashley’s response to my ask) is that 99 was done last.

(this is 99)

Oh, shoot. Then yeah; you’re absolutely right. Awesome!

I think I got somewhat addled by all the tie-porn gifs over the last few days.
