‘You’re- you’re teasing right? Right?’

‘We have to go!’

Thank you, person who pointed out that since this was shot after 100, the literal final words of the series are: “We have to go.”

I was curious about which episode was actually shot last, and meant to ask but never got around to it. Cool.

is my own post allowed to make me cry?

Definitely. (And if you’re Erin it’s actually required by the terms of your narcissism contract.)

Side note: I sent an ask to Ashley, and she was nice enough to write back to me that actually, the last thing they shot was the last take for episode 99 (which was the take they used).

So this bit from Q&A 10 must actually have been shot earlier (though I still like that, conceptually, it’s kind of the bookend to the series). And I guess whatever we’re going to get tomorrow in episode 100 must also have been shot before episode 99.

My guess is that since episode 100 features Lydia they shot that sometime relatively early on the final-shoot day, along with the Caroline episode (95), so those actors could be freed up. Then they probably did the Charlotte+Darcy episode (97), then maybe Q&A 10, then the rest of the Lizzie+Darcy episodes (96, 98 and 99).

But that’s just guessing. All I really know (from Ashley’s response to my ask) is that 99 was done last.

The Modern Family by AJ Frena

I wonder if the artist intended both apparent (at least to a birdwatcher) interpretations of “Modern Family”. Not only is the nest constructed from a lot of modern trash, but unless I’m mistaken both adult birds are male.

Even if the second sense was accidental, it’s timely that it comes through the day after four (or, more sadly, five) US Supreme Court justices betrayed a willingness in their questions during oral arguments to perpetuate discriminatory treatment of same-sex couples.

I’m the artist, so I’ll shed some light on this.

The two birds being male was my ignorance. I seriously did not know the difference, it was a blunder.

The piece is actually about my own family and how it has been affected by drugs and alcohol. The title is tongue in cheek.

I’m a member of the lgbt community, so the last thing I intended was for people to interpret my piece as something negative against it.

Oh wow, thanks for clarifying that.

If it came across that I thought the piece was making a negative statement against the lgbt community, that was a mistake on my part. Because I don’t think that at all. I think this is a really lovely and evocative piece (albeit one featuring some obvious ugliness by virtue of the incorporation of urban trash into the nest).

I suspected that having both birds be male might have been an accident, because a non-birdwatcher probably would not be aware that house sparrows (Passer domesticus) are sexually dimorphic, with the males having the dark bibs and relatively bold facial markings seen on these birds, while females are plainer. On the other hand, from an ornithological standpoint the painting is so well-done that I wondered if you maybe were aware. Both in terms of the depiction of the birds themselves and of the nest, these are house sparrows through and through. I’ve spent a lifetime observing birds and enjoying artistic representations of them, and from that perspective this is beautifully done.

House sparrows are a really interesting bird. Native to Europe and Asia, they were introduced into North America in 1852 in New York, and quickly covered much of the continent. Today they’re probably the most widely-distributed bird in the world, a reflection of how well-adapted they are to living around humans. As the human species has come to dominate the modern landscape, house sparrows have spread along with them.

I’ve seen many house sparrow nests that incorporate urban trash in a  manner similar to what you’ve shown here, though your image pushes it farther in making what I assume is an intentional (and effective) statement.

Anyway, thank you again for making this. If there is any more information available about the piece, I’d be really interested in learning more about it.

Wednesday, March 27th, 2013

YouTube suggested this video for me today for some inscrutable reason of its own.

It’s from “Redemption, Part II”, the ST:TNG season 5 premiere, which first aired September 23, 1991. I vaguely remember seeing the episode when it aired, but I didn’t remember the side plot excerpted here, in which Data is given his first command and faces pushback from a first officer who doesn’t think androids should be captains. It seemed like a fitting thing to watch on a day when I’m thinking about discrimination.

Something else I didn’t remember, but which jumped out at me while rewatching the episode today, is that the starship Data commands is the USS Sutherland. The HMS Sutherland was the 74-gun ship Horatio Hornblower commanded in A Ship of the Line, my favorite Hornblower novel.

The fate of the Sutherland in Forester’s novel was very much on my mind as I re-watched this video, and the parallels between Data’s decision-making in the episode and Hornblower’s in Rosas Bay make me think Ronald D. Moore’s script for “Redemption” was intentionally referencing A Ship of the Line.

Reading up on Moore, he attended college on a Navy ROTC scholarship and served for a month aboard the modern antisubmarine frigate USS W. S. Sims. So I don’t think it’s stretching things to imagine that he was aware of the Hornblower connection.

There’s also this, from memory-alpha.org:

According to the Star Trek Encyclopedia, “the Sutherland was named for Horatio Hornblower’s flagship in the classic C.S. Forester novels that served as one of Gene Roddenberry’s original inspirations for Star Trek.”

When I first came across the Tumblr Hornblower fandom, they were discussing the shipping of actual ships. HMS Sutherland, though described by Hornblower as the ugliest ship of the line in the Royal Navy, is the vessel I immediately thought of. I have a lot of feelings for the Sutherland.

Our Moon, forever to be graced by the footprints of twelve brave men.

Besides the twelve men who walked on the moon’s surface, I also like to think about the twelve other men who flew around the moon but never got a chance to land:

  • Apollo 8: Frank Borman, Jim Lovell, and William Anders
  • Apollo 10: Thomas Stafford (along with John Young and Eugene Cernan, but they subsequently landed on the moon as part of Apollos 16 and 17, respectively)
  • Apollo 11: Michael Collins
  • Apollo 12: Richard Gordon
  • Apollo 13: Jim Lovell (again), Jack Swigert, and Fred Haise
  • Apollo 14: Stuart Roosa
  • Apollo 15: Alfred Worden
  • Apollo 16: Ken Mattingly
  • Apollo 17: Ronald Evans

Eleanor & Park

Warning: Very unpopular opinion about a book everyone is in love with for some reason

I found Eleanor’s behavior toward the end of the book to be appropriate to where she was and what she was going through as a character, especially after re-reading the book.

The fact that she doesn’t look like a certain kind of standardized heroine didn’t bother me, and I thought said some important things about how hard it can be to stand out as different at that age, but it sounds like I didn’t have the same issues with that aspect of the story that you did.

Her (in the moment) willingness to have unprotected sex probably reads differently today than it would have in 1986. It was a different time, some ways. And for all that she thought that, her actual actions in the story are important to consider, too.

Nothing is going to work for everyone, and just because an opinion happens to be unpopular doesn’t invalidate it, especially for something as personal as someone’s reaction to a book.

My reaction to this book was (obviously) a lot more positive than yours, but I really appreciate your willingness to share your thoughts.

Truncated transcript from today’s SCOTUS argument

Tuesday, March 26th, 2013

courtneymilan:

For those of you who don’t want to read the transcript of the oral argument in Hollingsworth v. Perry, which is all of 82 pages long, or whose heads exploded when you tried to read it, I’ve written a helpful summary. It’s available below the jump.

This summary is still fairly long, but it’s shorter and I’ve worked to make things as accessible as possible to those without legal training.

As a result, there are some places where I might have oversimplified the legal argument. My summarizing might be partially colored by my personal viewpoints, but this is basically what happened, plus or minus the aliens eating children.

This account was very entertaining to read. Unfortunately, that entertainment value comes at the cost of having a Supreme Court comprised of people who would actually say some of the things being satirized. On the whole, I would have much preferred not to have the entertainment, at least if that would have meant also not having a Supreme Court comprised of people who would make such execrable arguments for discrimination.

But I don’t get that wish, so I guess I’ll do my best to enjoy the entertainment.

But the larger situation still sucks. Or will suck, once the ruling is issued. Not for Californians specifically, assuming Prop. 8 is overturned. But for people living in states with discriminatory marriage laws.

Just a short while after announcing a new album, “Kveikur,” due out on June 17 via XL records, Sigur Rós played Madison Square Garden on Tuesday night.

The Icelandic band played a mix of new and old material at one of their biggest shows on the world tour so far! More after the jump:

THANK YOU.

This does a really nice job of matching the way I see the characters in my head.

scinerds:

A classic.

David Quammen’s book Song of the Dodo, more than anything else I’ve read, changed how I see the world. Quammen is a former Rhodes Scholar and literature student who specialized in Faulkner but ended up as a science writer. He wrote for Outside for many years, then undertook a longer work on island biogeography and extinction, weaving together something that imitates the form of a novel while presenting the history of evolutionary thought from Darwin and Wallace down through Robert MacArthur and E. O. Wilson. It’s a beautiful book, one whose insights are only going to become more relevant as time goes on.

Quammen is a hero of mine because he looks unflinching on the world as it is, but doesn’t give up his humanity in order to do so.

After only doing 13 songs the previous night at the US tour’s debut in Washington DC, they did 16 songs at last night’s show at Madison Square Garden. They did all 15 songs that they did at the London show that ended the European tour, and added “Hrafntinna”, a song I don’t recognize, so maybe it’s going to be on the upcoming Kveikur album?

There’s a YouTube video of them performing “Hrafntinna” (which Google Translate tells me is “obsidian” in Icelandic) at the show in Porto, Portugal on February 13, 2013.
