A note on stories

Tuesday, March 26th, 2013

theashleyclements:

I get so many wonderful messages telling me what The Lizzie Bennet Diaries has meant to people. They often include telling me that they’ve been going through a hard thing – a big change in their lives, a loved one’s illness, depression – and that The LBD has been a source of comfort and happiness; that these characters have become their friends. These notes often include something like “I know that sounds silly…”

I just want to say that does not sound sillyThat is why storytelling and art have been a part of human tradition for as long as we have records of humans. I absolutely have shows, movies, plays, and books in my life that are my friends, that got me through terrible times, that taught me about myself and my relationships to the people and world around me.

We need stories. Stories are important. There is nothing silly or dumb about relating to them and feeling attached to them. They help us see ourselves and others in new ways. They help us feel our feelings. They make us laugh when we feel low. They help us realize dreams and conquer fears. They give us a fuller understanding of the world.

We should never diminish the power of fictional stories. Do not apologize for being moved by movies, TV shows, theater, art, books, or even a webseries that puts out 5 minute episodes twice a week. Jump into them whole-heartedly and let them transform you. Let them be your friends. Why not? They want to be yours.

I am honored, more than I can ever express, to have been a part of something that has affected people’s lives, because I understand what that means. I am deeply, deeply touched that our show has become what it is, and that it’s made people feel things that have impacted them. It hasn’t been perfect, but nothing is, and the journey we’ve all taken together has been one I’ll never forget.

I’ve written about it before (like here, last October) so I won’t repeat what I wrote then. But Ashley was the reason LBD succeeded. Obviously there were many other elements that contributed. It was a team effort, and the team was more than the sum of its parts. But Ashley’s ability to carry the show was the single most important factor.

Watching the seahorse Q&A with her and Daniel, it was remarkable to me how she rattled of references to episodes by number. She wasn’t showing off; she was just giving a window into how she thinks. And the slightly scary fact is that she has a complete catalog of all 100 episodes of the main show (and probably a working knowledge of the spinoffs) in her head at all times.

Think about that. Think about her ability to memorize 50 pages of script in a couple of days, such that she arrived on set each month ready to shoot eight or ten episodes flawlessly. Think about how, when she does interviews, she speaks off the cuff in well-formed thoughts and complete sentences.

Or read this post I’m reblogging here.

What Ashley has is special. Actors aren’t known for their intelligence, though the stereotype of “dumb actors” is unfair. But Ashley’s obviously a genius. And I don’t mean that in the gushing Tumblr sense; I mean it literally. (Gah! Literally literally, not Tumblr literally.) And she isn’t just intelligent. She has drive and perseverance. She sets high goals, then puts in the work required to reach them. It’s a rare combination.

Ashley could have succeeded at anything she chose to do. That she chose to create stories and share them with an audience is an awesome gift, one that every LBD fan should be grateful for. I know I am.

Correction: You discovered a mystic portal to another world. What are they teaching you in that school, anyway? Clearly you should bail and see how deep the rabbit hole goes.

Hi, John! Would you ever give away your url? I could gain you 250+ followers, give you a custom theme and give you a pretty good url. Are you interested? Thanks, and I’m sorry for annoying you but I really love your url.

Monday, March 25th, 2013

It’s not annoying; thank you for asking so nicely.

At the moment I’m not interested in giving up this URL, no. Though I can imagine it happening. On a long enough time scale, we’re all giving up everything eventually. I have no doubt that the ‘lies’ Tumblr URL will be no exception.

But I’m not planning to give it up today.

chococonut:

A lot of people have been asking me to do a drawing for Charlotte to complete the Lizzie Bennet Diaries’s set. I actually had done one a while ago but I had decide against posting it for a few reasons.

I couldn’t get the colours right, couldn’t get a sketch of Julia Cho that looked enough like her and I didn’t know what to write in the background.

To this day, I’m still not 100% satisfied about the colour and the sketch but I decide to post it anyway… :D

Congrats to the lizzie bennet team for coming to the end of this wonderful (very successful) journey this week. (wow)

I need to remember to get the dvd set from kickstarter….

They’re all wonderful, and it’s nice to have the set complete. Thanks!

It has recently become possible to view high school photos of me on the Internet. You can also read a letter I wrote to my 16-year-old self.

I’m not sure what I’d have to say to my 16-year-old self. But it’s an interesting thing to think about. Rainbow Rowell does a nice job in her letter.

[x]

FYI, I’ve added this and the previous semi-official hangouts-on-air done by the Seahorsey types to my LBD episode spreadsheet. So if you’re looking for them, you can find them there.

Of course, if that’s all you’re looking for, you can find them a lot more easily on the LBDSeahorses page on YouTube.

It’s hard for me not to see this as an intentional evocation of Life of Pi. Except, of course, it’s not. But maybe it is?

I’m going to stop wondering and just look at it.

Hey. So it’s nearly 7AM and I haven’t slept because I decided at 3AM to glance at the first page of Eleanor and Park and now my heart is breaking and I blame you. (And John Green and Rainbow Rowell.) It was beautiful and awful and I need to cry but I can’t because my mind gets weird once it realizes I’m pulling an all nighter. So, thanks for that. Jerk. Your tumble name is a lie, you weren’t lying at all about how wonderful Eleanor and Park is.

Sunday, March 24th, 2013

Getting sucked in and staying up too late to read more of E&P apparently is a thing. It happened to me (I didn’t have your zeal, and ended up spreading it out over two nights, but putting it down and going to sleep that first night was really hard). I’ve seen at least two other fans of the book talk about doing the same thing you did.

I was up kind of late last night finishing my latest re-reading. I think I’ve actually been a little sleep-deprived lately from all the late-night reading and re-reading of the book I’ve been doing. I think it’s cool that there’s a passage in the book that deals with the same thing, when Eleanor is really tired because she’s been staying up late reading Park’s comics.

Anyway, my apologies for contributing to your own lack of sleep. But yeah, John Green and (especially) Rainbow Rowell are the ones who really deserve the blame. I’m happy people are reading the book. It’s so good! Maybe if YA isn’t your thing it won’t come off like great literature; it’s gritty and real, not always soaring and beautiful, prose-wise. But it’s SO real, and the beautiful character moments are so powerful, that I think even someone inclined to dismiss it as “oh, another book about teenagers” could fall in love if they’d only give it a chance.

I’m glad you did. Now get some rest, so you can read it again! :-)

Tyree Callahan has recycled (or upcycled, perhaps) a classic 1937 Underwood typewriter by replacing letters with sponges soaked across the spectrum with bright yellows, reds, blues and combinations thereof.

Photographer Ventures to Volcanos and Lava Flows in Hawaii

Hawaii-based photographer Sean King captures beautiful photographs of lava flows in Hawaii, venturing into locations where lava reaches temperatures of 2000°F.

King first moved to Hawaii 8 years ago after years of working in construction in New York City. One day he decided that he wanted to show some of Hawaii’s beauty with his friends back in New York, so he grabbed a digital camera and went to the Kilauea volcano.

Soon, he was hooked on photographing volcanos and their lava flows, carefully mixing in views of moonbows and the starry night sky.

King acknowledges that his photos often look ‘shopped and slightly fake. The photographer is colorblind, which affects how he perceives the images he post-processes, and the intensity of the colors they end up with once he’s done.

demurely1:

Youtube thought I’d like this – they were right!

Just for Mark Latimer  ;-)

It’s kind of sad that BMG has made a point of getting the video of Bonnie Raitt’s live performance (with Bruce Hornsby on piano) at the 1992 Grammy awards removed from YouTube, at least for people in the US (and apparently elsewhere, since my attempts to view it using a proxy have also failed). Because I can still remember the shock I felt when I watched that performance when it originally aired.

Maybe it’s fitting, though, since for me the memory comes from a time when the instant gratification of being able to watch whatever I want whenever I want it wasn’t a thing yet.

I don’t remember where I was, though from the calendar I probably was at home in Mammoth with Linda. Nine-month-old Julia was probably asleep in the next room. I wasn’t a Bonnie Raitt fan, or a Bruce Hornsby fan, so my expectations weren’t high. And then the song started, just the piano and her voice, and everything in my world stopped.

From the Wikipedia page for the song:

For Raitt, the song was notoriously difficult to sing, due to its required vocal range, difficult phrasing and breathing, and the emotional content involved. At the televised Grammy Awards of 1992 Raitt performed it in an even more austere setting than on record, with just her and Hornsby highlighted. As she negotiated the final vocal line, she let out a big audible and visible sigh of relief that she had successfully gotten through it.

I don’t remember the sigh of relief. I just remember being mesmerized by the performance.

In an interview with NPR in 2002, Raitt said:

I mean, ‘I Can’t Make You Love Me’ is no picnic. I love that song, so does the audience. So it’s almost a sacred moment when you share that, that depth of pain with your audience. Because they get really quiet, and I have to summon … some other place in order to honor that space.

Through the years (largely through the influence of my music-industry wife) I’ve come to appreciate that the Grammys tend to have really good performances. It’s not just that these are some of the top acts in the business. It’s that they’re performing live, for just a few minutes, in front of an audience that includes the musical greats they themselves grew up idolizing. So there’s a lot on the line, and they tend to bring it.

Not every time, and not every artist. But on February 25, 1992, Bonnie Raitt brought it. I hope I get a chance to see that performance again someday. Because in my memory of that night 21 years ago, it was pretty much the most beautiful thing I’d ever heard.

Saw this from Hank’s tweet. It really is ridiculously awesome. I’m tempted to add it to the spreadsheet, but I don’t know; that’s 100 additional rows.

But I’m tempted. It’s awfully cool.
