This reminds me of Lana Wachowski’s story about being in third grade, not knowing which line to line up in.

I’m not trying to disobey. I’m just trying to fit in.

Sigur Ros, Kveikur (live on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon)

Basically however you say this is freaking awesome in Icelandic is my take on the performance.  Also is Fallon’s pronunciation of “Kveikur” (basically qu-ak-er) how you really say it?  If so I just learned something because I was not pronouncing it correctly at all.

HOLY FUCK

I was checking out setlists from the European leg of the tour last night; the most-recent one at setlist.fm is from March 9 in London:

  1. Yfirborð
  2. Ný Batterí
  3. Vaka
  4. Sæglópur
  5. Fljótavík
  6. E-bow
  7. Varúð
  8. Hoppípolla
  9. Með Blóðnasir
  10. Olsen Olsen
  11. Kveikur
  12. Festival
  13. Brennisteinn

Encore:

  1. Glósóli
  2. Popplagið

I gather the band has been taking a few weeks off, but now they’re in New York (where they played on Jimmy Fallon last night), and the US leg of the tour starts Monday.

So I don’t usually review books but this one was too good to resist.

Eleanor & Park, by Rainbow Rowell. I, like many, heard about it through John Green’s review. And I had such high expectations for this book, and it didn’t disappoint in the least.

I don’t think I’ve ever loved a book the way I…

A Mesmerizing Slow-Motion Drive Down the Streets of NYC

ombining the capabilities of a high-speed camera with the basic idea that “there are enough [magical moments] happening every moment of any given day,” New York artist James Nares is currently captivating audiences at the Metropolitan Museum of Art with his mesmerizing video “Street.”

Shot in September of 2011, “Street” consists entirely of slow-motion panning shots of the streets of New York, as seen from a moving car. Using a high-speed camera, Nares captured 16 hours of footage, which he then edited down to 3 (regular speed) minutes — translating into just over an hour of slow-mo magic.

In his own words:

My intention was to give the dreamlike impression of floating through a city full of people frozen in time, caught Pompeii-like, at a particular moment of thought, expression, or activity… a film to be viewed 100 years from now.

You can catch a couple of minutes of “Street” by checking out the preview at the top. Or, if you’re lucky enough to be living in NYC at the moment, head over to the Met where the video will make up the centerpiece of the “Street” exhibit from now until May 27th.

Interesting update to what Godfrey Reggio did with the slo-mo people in Koyaanisqatsi.

See? Now the camera moves.

Saturday, March 23rd, 2013

oceanportal:

Gobies make up the largest family (Gobiidae) of fishes in the world, with over 2,000 species. In this large family you can also find the smallest fish. The gobies in this photo are about one inch long (2.5 cm), and most in the family are less than four inches. Because of their small size gobies must work to evade their many predators, often through burrowing or special mutualistic relationships with other animals.

“It’s quite normal for this type of goby to sit still on hard coral like this. I spotted the first of these very small fish and set up my camera for the shot. Just as I was about to take a picture, a second goby came out of nowhere and sat on the first one. I quickly corrected the frame and took two or three shots before both of them disappeared. It was an incredible moment.”— Nature’s Best Photographer, Tobias Friedrich

neither-saint-nor-sinner:

Caroline, unrequited.

requested by someone who hates me anonymous (umm this is way bigger and more maudlin that what you asked for; see the Read More)

I wish we could have seen more interaction between Caroline and the characters who drive her actions. I mean, I had to use cast pictures for this because the source material gives me so little to work with, but whatever. I could whine about not enough Caroline for a really long time, and no one wants to see that. This isn’t her story anyway.

Caroline Lee spinoff series.

Freed from Austen, freed from carrying the “pretty little wilderness” scene, freed from the conventionality of a jealous-of-Darcy motivation, she could actually live as a character.

I can’t stop wondering about Caroline x Lizzie. It was there beneath the surface in every scene they did together. Every time Lizzie looked away and Caroline looked at her, it was there. And as Ren discussed here, there was an honesty when Caroline talked about her family. Something other than her usual misdirection was going on in those moments.

There was a lot more to her character than we ever saw on-screen. And in a way it’s kind of a gift that so few of her details were filled in, because now we can fill them in right. Not via fanfic, but via an actual spinoff YouTube series of her own.

There is a version of the future in which the quantum superpositions resolve in favor of this becoming an actual thing. I hope I get to live in that future. Because it’s going to be an awesome one.

edwardspoonhands: So we launched a Kickstarter a couple hours…

Friday, March 22nd, 2013

edwardspoonhands:

So we launched a Kickstarter a couple hours ago and…yeah, we’re half way there….uhhhh…woah.

I suppose I should also tell you about the Kickstarter which includes:

  1. A “Lizzie Bennet Edition” of Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen with an introduciton by me (yes, we’re printing up copies of P&P because THERE AREN’T ENOUGH IN THE WORLD! The book is being designed by Karen Kavett, and she’s doing an amazing job
  2. A 8-9 disc DVD set (we’re not sure yet) which will include all of the content that was part of the project as well as out-takes, episode commentaries, interviews with cast members, writers, and creators, and little featurettes.

And with this we are raising money to:

  1. Produce a new series based on Austen’s unfinished novel “Sanditon.” Gigi Darcy will be the heroine in this short tale, which will bridge the gap before we launch our next big series in July (which we don’t need to kickstart because it has already been funded thanks to Deca.)
  2. Produce all of the bonus content for the DVDs and actually manufacture them (because unlike a 1-disc CD, they’re actually quite expensive to manufacture.)
  3. Help to pay all of the people that we barely paid to produce this series. The nature of online video (as we’ve discussed) is that it’s very difficult to make enough money to pay more than one person a living wage. The magnificent success of LBD would indicate that we should have been able to pay our actors, writers, producers, and crew well…but we were not. So excess money from this kickstarter will be distributed to that team to reward them for all of their hard work.

And you wanna know something nuts…in the time it took me to write this…we’re up to $40k.

JEEZLE!

will I ever grow out of tumblr or will I still be here blogging in my thirties

oh my god i never thought about that

“grandma will you make me some cookies?”

“shut up, grandma’s got a blog to run”

you’re planning on being a grandma when you’re in your thirties

Well this doesn’t make me feel old at all… (I’m 32) Where are my grandkids?

Hahahahahahaha! That’s just precious, honestly. How young and adorably clueless do you have to be to think that way about being in your thirties? (I’m 30 on the nose.)

I can remember when I was in first grade, at a school that went up through sixth grade, when I basically thought that the sixth graders were practically adults (because c’mon; from a first-grader’s perspective they kind of are). I recall literally (by which I mean, literally) thinking that after sixth grade one basically settled down, got married, and started a family.

It’s funny to me how that same dynamic basically carries through at all ages. I remember as a teenager computing how old I’d be in the year 2000 (38), and thinking, “Man; I’m going to be old.” And so on.
