Craftversations is back, and this month my guest is the lovely Jessica Jade Andres! Watch as we decorate stationary with pencils and stamp pads and talk everything from The Lizzie Bennet Diaries to Poe Party to hypnotism to sororities. And stay tuned for part two coming on Friday!

This was a good episode. Part 2 tomorrow; yay! :-)

Quick housekeeping note: I’ve started using an ifttt.com recipe to reblog posts made here (that is, on the ‘lies’ tumblr) with the tag “carp without cars” to my pre-existing WordPress blog at carpwithoutcars.org, the way I’d already been reblogging everything posted here to my lies.com blog. It’s intended to help me keep stuff organized and searchable, since I apparently lack the discipline to do that using only the tools on Tumblr. I also want to preserve my Tumblr spew in case @staff ever decides I’m persona non grata and just deletes the whole thing (which apparently is a thing they do).

The ifttt.com recipe doesn’t work retroactively, so I’m going to reblog a number of my old “carp without cars” posts here so they get reposted over there. I’ll schedule that to happen a few at a time in the wee hours over the next few days, so it hopefully won’t be too annoying on anyone’s dash. Thanks.

A few more photos from walks over the last few days: new inflorescences on a Western sycamore (Platanus racemosa) at the Bluffs from when I was checking out the ravens, and another shot of my birthday moon rising, this one from the corner of Ash and 5th Street.

macaroon22:

Dolley Madison was so awesome!

She was a Quaker and had two sons. Her husband and son died from a yellow fever epidemic and she was left a widow. Her neighbor Aaron Burr introduced Dolley to James Madison and the two of them became engaged but since Madison wasn’t a Quaker, she was expelled for marrying outside her faith.

In 1814 the British invaded and burned down the White House.  Dolley Madison risked her own safety and refused to leave the estate until she had the painting of George Washington with her.

“This is the second and final appearance of the eleven-foot model Enterprise, which orbits from…”

Wednesday, March 23rd, 2016

“This is the second and final appearance of the eleven-foot model Enterprise, which orbits from right-to-left in the teaser. When the transposition to the parallel universe occurs, the ISS version is orbiting in the opposite direction. Although the episode was produced in 1967, the footage of the ship was filmed for “Where No Man Has Gone Before” in 1965, indicated by the heightened bridge dome, the oversized deflector dish, and the unlit Bussard collectors (complete with spires). However, in “Where No Man Has Gone Before”, there were no rounded “nodes” at the rear of the nacelles, which appear in this episode. The first time the ship orbited in this direction, (TOS: “Shore Leave”), scenes of the revamped production model were simply reversed as can be seen by the backward registration. In this episode, though, the model was shot with reversed nomenclature as the port side was unfinished. It is unknown why so little of this footage was used during the series. Despite the effort expended to highlight the opposite nature of the mirror universe, the Enterprise is seen orbiting from left-to-right in all of the scenes after the main title.”

Tuesday, March 22nd, 2016

The best part of my birthday walk to the marsh was this song I heard coming from a myoporum bush next to Santa Monica Creek where it runs under Carp Avenue.

I was pretty sure it was a warbler, but I didn’t recognize the song. The singer turned out to be a Townsend’s warbler, and he let me stand right under him and record him (and the passing cars) with the Voice Memo app on my phone.

Tuesday, March 22nd, 2016

“Canada, the most affluent of countries, operates on a depletion economy which leaves destruction in its wake. Your people are driven by a terrible sense of deficiency. When the last tree is cut, the last fish is caught, and the last river is polluted; when to breathe the air is sickening, you will realize, too late, that wealth is not in bank accounts and that you can’t eat money.”
