so curiosity won out…. does your 2359 tag have a meaning you’re willing to share?

Monday, September 21st, 2015

It’s the time when those posts are scheduled to appear: 11:59 p.m. (in my local time zone, currently -0700 compared to UTC).

At some point I got the idea of posting a single sillier/darker/more narcissistically self-referential post at midnight (or a minute before, rather) as a way of capping off my day’s blogging activity. After a while I started tagging them. I don’t always do it, though lately I’ve been doing it more.

It doesn’t really mean anything, except maybe that I’m obsessing more than I should be about my blog.

“Instead, we make what we love and dress how we like and dance in our kitchens and breathe in the good moments because we know nothing lasts that long. We will never have everything we ever wanted. The world will not turn shiny and spotless and perfect one day. We aren’t rushing to some imaginary finish line. We are inching along slowly, smelling the flowers, playing with our dogs and cats, giving generously to those who need our help when we can.”

Ask Polly: Should I Just Give Up on My Writing? – The Cut (via siminib)

“Somehow, you have to commit to your work and commit to getting it exposed, but you also have to detach yourself from any given outcome. You have to work hard to get in editors’ and readers’ faces, but you also have to feel completely fine with being a nobody forever and ever. Personally, I find it much easier to invest in my work when I’m at peace with it never amounting to shit. I can focus on making it as good as it can be without getting distracted by things that don’t matter.”

I’m curious about this statement: “They would have needed control of a light source like fire.” Why is that? By that I mean, why would it have been impossible for H. naledi to have navigated to the excavation chamber (or at least to the top of the chute leading to it) without an artificial light source? Granted it seems unlikely, but is it more unlikely than a much earlier use of fire than previously believed? Has that question been discussed much so far? Thanks!

Sunday, September 20th, 2015

They would have needed control of a light source because the
chamber and the route to it is pitch dark. Without a light, there is no way to
navigate in that environment, let alone to the extent that H. naledi must have done to reach the chamber that they did. Once
you move past the entrance of the system about 5m, there is no light and the
terrain is treacherous. Remember, it looks as though the path into the chamber
has changed very little geologically/topographically over the intervening
period of time (no skylights). I think the idea that they would have navigated the path into
the system without a light source
like fire much more difficult to believe than the scenario in which they were
using it. Plus, we have no dates for H.
naledi
yet. We don’t know how early or late they are! There is evidence to
suggest that the lineage might be fairly old but this isn’t to say that the
fossil are as old as the lineage. They could be younger or they could be as old
as their brain size and parts of their postcranial anatomy suggest. If H. naledi does obliquely provide
evidence for an early use of fire, then that’s pretty cool I think! I mean, the
evidence already suggests that they were participating in some pretty complex
behaviours. What’s fire use after that?

jamberlies:

I was tagged by lies in the “pictures on my phone” tag, so here we go!

Two of my categories are the same as lies: “oh that’s cool looking” versus “I need to record this” (at least half of my pictures are lab recipes I was too lazy to actually write down). The third category is selfies.

Also, one of these may or may not be from when I didn’t leave my house for a whole weekend so I could binge-play Myst.

I’ll give you 200 for this url

Sunday, September 20th, 2015

Wow. Awesome. I’m pretty sure you’re the first person to make a more or less specific offer. (I assume you mean US$200.)

Thinking carefully…

Sorry, no. My irrational attachment to the URL is too strong. But thank you so much for the generous offer!

sixpenceee:

These are noctilucent clouds. They are Earth’s highest clouds, forming on tiny crystals of water ice and dust particles high in the mesosphere near the edge of space. They are generally only visible on rare occasions in the late spring to summer months in the hours after sunset and at high latitudes, 50° to 70° north and south of the equator. (Source)

What says America’s Cup to you?

The 12s. They were the Cup when I was growing up.

Or the other, bigger, plank-on-edge Cup boats: 70-footers, 90-footers, Js. Other boats are cool, too. Non-AC sleds that can do 30 knots off the wind, foiling cats that can do 40; they’re all great. But narrow and heavy with a big upwind sailplan is the boat I’ll always sail on if I can, or watch longingly from shore.

I don’t know whose photo this is (please tell me if you know where this came from!) but I’m a meme. Omg that’s me in a meme. A feminist meme. My life is made. This is on the same level as my caving gear in a museum.

Why are you having a tupperware party with a bat? What does a bat need tupperware for?

We were excavating an archaeological site within a cave system. The tupperware was used for transporting fossils out of the cave without damaging them! We placed the fossils in sealed bags with their ID tags, wrapped them in bubble wrap, and placed them in the containers so we could be sure they wouldn’t break on their way back to the surface. It was a bit hairy travelling in and out of the system, as you can see. :)
