Does anyone know what kind of bird this is? It was strutting by the drive through like it owned the place. Is it a blackbird? Raven? Crow? Rook?? The deep blue looked so striking against the black feathers.

lies, I’m sure you know.

It would help to know where the OP took the photo, but seeing a reference to “tornado country” in a previous post, I’m going to assume we’re talking middle America/Great Plains/Texas and parts north of there.

Pretty sure that’s a male grackle, either a Common Grackle (which would be about 12.5 inches in overall length) or a Great-tailed Grackle (about 18 inches). The color looks a little better for Great-tailed to me, but if the OP knows even roughly how big it was that’s probably the best way to distinguish between them.

What does it sound like lies?

Kind of hard to describe. Common grackle makes this harsh-sounding crackly/squeaky song. Great-tailed is more varied and musical-sounding, at least relatively speaking, but still pretty weird-sounding compared to what most people probably expect a bird to sound like, with pops and whistles and chattering all mixed together. The great-tailed, especially, is fairly loud, too. If one is around and vocalizing, you’ll definitely hear it.

You can probably find some recordings online if you google for it.

The Manby apparatus was a lifesaving device consisting of a rope fired from a mortar. Captain George Manby invented it after a shipwreck in 1807 at Great Yarmouth, Norfolk. He became a Fellow of the Royal Society in the year that this work was exhibited.

marykatewiles:

I’ve really been struggling with discouragement lately.

I know that everybody understands that making a living as an actor is hard, and I knew that, too, going into it; but it amazes me still, over five years since I shot my first feature film, how hard it really is.

It’s especially hard when you’re supporting yourself independently and struggling to make ends meet and the only lens you can see through is Money. It’s hard when everyone around you seems to be doing incredibly well and you put pressure on yourself to do the same in a business that is very largely arbitrary and out of your control.

And everyone has dry spells, and we all know this, and these things have their seasons, but it can be very difficult to not lose your mind when you try very hard to do everything right and indeed, have gotten very close to some big jobs, only to find yourself helpless and at the mercy of a system that makes little sense and is very hard to crack.

And I’m not asking for sympathy, or encouragement, and when I think back on all the things that I DO have I feel pretty ridiculous for having these feelings in the first place, but I guess I just, I want to be honest. This career isn’t easy, and the fear of trying to do everything right and still not getting anywhere is very, very real.

“Entangled” – Genesis, A Trick of the Tail (1976)

I was def. going too obscure in my previous guess. It’s obvious in light of today’s clue that this will be the song Sinead sings in the Kissing in the Rain musical parody on Monday.

I mean, c’mon. At least make it a challenge.

P.S. I hope we get a bonus, and Sinead sings “Squonk” right after. Because that segue rocks.

Oh, man. I’ve been overthinking this. The real answer was there in front of me the whole time.

Posting it in a second.

Umm you old creep who prob rapes kids get of tumblr

Thursday, April 24th, 2014

So I actually want to thank you for the ask, anon. Not for the hateful accusation (obviously, because srsly, wtf) but for the reminder of something I’ve been thinking about lately, which is how Tumblr gives me a chance to experience being a member of a disadvantaged minority, if only briefly and in a limited context.

I’m aware, on an intellectual level (mostly because of Tumblr itself) that I enjoy lots of privilege. I’m white, male, heterosexual, cisgendered… In almost every way it’s possible to have an undeserved, societally-enforced advantage, I have it.

I try to be aware of my privilege, and of the unfair discrimination that is its flipside. But that’s not the same as actually experiencing a tiny taste of discrimination myself.

Being subjected to slurs and negative stereotypes not because of anything I’ve done, but merely because you hold an irrational animus, sucks. And I can know that intellectually, but actually experiencing it firsthand is way more effective at helping me understand how unjust it is.

So thanks for the lesson. But no, I don’t plan to go away anytime soon. You should just block me. We’ll both be happier.

Colección de Mentiras Ilustradas or Illustrated Lies Collection by Aitana Carrasco Inglés.

Some of the lies contained in this book:

  • If you don’t eat your veggies you’ll stay little forever.
  • If you don’t finish everything on your plate we will have to use a funnel.
  • Come on, this spoonfull is the last one.
  • If you eat the seeds a tree will grow inside you.

For lies because this book reminded me of him :)

Thank you!

It’s kind of awesome (delusional, but awesome) for me to imagine there is a small but doughty host of tumblr users roaming the world, seeking out cool and lovely falsehood-related content and bringing it back to my tumblr dash.

It is, in fact, a matter of awesome.

Okay; I definitely think I’ve got it this time: This is what Sinead is going to sing for the musical interlude episode of Kissing in the Rain. Such a cool song!

The heart of the Rosette Nebula and its details

In the heart of the Rosette Nebula lies a bright open cluster of stars that lights up the nebula. The stars of NGC 2244 formed from the surrounding gas only a few million years ago. The above image taken in January using multiple exposures and very specific colors of Sulfur (shaded red), Hydrogen (green), and Oxygen (blue), captures the central region in tremendous detail. A hot wind of particles streams away from the cluster stars and contributes to an already complex menagerie of gas and dust filaments while slowly evacuating the cluster center. The Rosette Nebula’s center measures about 50 light-years across, lies about 4,500 light-years away, and is visible with binoculars towards the constellation of the Unicorn (Monoceros). [via APOD]
