“So basically, Ronald Reagan set up hospital emergency rooms as socialized healthcare, and…”

Saturday, October 26th, 2013

So basically, Ronald Reagan set up hospital emergency rooms as socialized healthcare, and then…

…didn’t fund them.

It’s an unfunded mandate.

So it’s illegal to let patients die on your doorstep. A step forward in society (Reagan at the time said it allied with American’s Christian principles and his own). But the Republicans of the time never paid for it. They kicked that particular can down the road.

As a result, hospitals saw emergency room visits drastically increase. Insurance companies, because many of the uninsured used emergency rooms as care (to which they’re legally allowed, it’s how to collect the payment later that’s in issue), try to refuse to pay for the increase. Hospitals got clever at burying costs into healthy patient’s procedures, or anywhere else.

The system gets distorted.

So we already have socialized healthcare, it’s just that the hospitals, the government, and the insurance companies are all putting their fingers on their noses and saying ‘not it!’ due to that single fact: the 1986 bill was an unfunded mandate.

Tobias Buckell, American healthcare was already socialized by Reagan, we’re just fighting about how to pay for it.

qwarky:

omg now i wanna make a really dope tumblr for edgar allan poe. Nothing to do with a tell tale vlog just i could do such a good job of that and i oh man that’d be great

Hm. The universes would have to merge somehow.

Jane follows Lizzie on Twitter, so she’s in-world with LBD/WtS/EA. Poe certainly looks period, but then there’s the camera, and Lenore’s modern speech, so I suppose we could posit obsessive never-leaves-his-study historical cosplay on his part to make him modern, too. So then he could be in-world with Jane, and she could just happen to run into him. Hm. Maybe at some future point in the story she could be looking for another nanny situation, and come across a Craigslist ad for Poe’s Lenore-replacement.

Or, going another way, since we’ve already got supernatural stuff explicitly in-world in ATTV, Jane could be sucked back in time Lost-in-Austen-style, or Poe propelled forward a la Sleepy Hollow, and there you are.

I’m not suggesting any of this should happen canonically. But I’d definitely read and enjoy the fic.

‘The Lizzie Bennet Diaries’ fans will love these 4 literary web series:

shipwreckedcomedy:

YES. This just made our day.

You know how Tumblr ships the creators of Elementary and Sleepy Hollow, collectively, and gets super excited when they interact with each other? That’s how I feel about AoJE and ATTV.

To repeat something I’ve said before: There was a point in the latter half of LBD when some of the negative fan response was getting really ugly, and I had to back away from some people whose commentary I’d previously really looked forward to. I kept thinking: guys, I get that with the benefit of hindsight the show has fallen short of what it could have been. The people who made it weren’t you. They had different goals. They worked under constraints that are hard to appreciate from outside.

But one of the great things about LBD is that it demonstrates how you as a critic aren’t limited to telling us what they did wrong and how much better you could do. You can show us — by making your own show. It’s that cheap.

At first when I said that it was hurt fefes. Oh yeah? You think you could do better? Why don’t you prove it? But then I realized, srsly, why don’t you? Everyone should make a web series. Let a thousand flowers bloom.

Many of the resulting shows will be silly and amateurish, because for all their failings the people behind LBD are freakishly good at what they do, and make it look easy when in fact it’s hard. And some shows will die on the vine, because no one is getting paid, and the effort to make something even halfway good is insane.

But when the thousand flowers have bloomed a few of them will be beautiful.

I feel so grateful for shows like AoJE and ATTV. Not just for the enjoyment I get from watching them, or the sense of community I get from sharing them with other fans. I feel grateful because their creators restore my faith in humanity.

People who are publicly snarky and mean just because someone tried to create something and ended up falling short make me sad. They make me angry. They make me embarrassed to be a member of the same species.

Alysson, Nessa, Sean, Sinead, Yulin, and your dozens of collaborators: You’re the opposite of that. Your talent and perseverance in making these shows, your courage and generosity in sending them out into the world, make me proud to be a human being. You’re inspiring.

Also: Perfect.

Thanks.

theorlandojones:

There are seriously no words.

We’re a mere 5 episodes into Sleepy Hollow and the level of discourse with this fandom is unlike anything I’ve ever experienced.

In all the recent press we’ve done I have been quick to point out that the creative team behind this show (both in front of and behind the camera) are what make it, without question, the BEST professional experience I have ever had.

But you people; I mean…

I’ve read a good number of the comments from my earlier post linking to the article about Teen Wolf. I found the feedback to be thoughtful, didactic, challenging and honest.

Although I’m not a writer for Sleepy Hollow I understand and am sensitive to the importance of our role as stewards of these characters that we are fortunate enough to inhabit. Television enters our homes as an invited guest that can connect, promote and inspire just as easily as it can perpetuate tropes, idioms and stereotypes that marginalize those voices that deserve to be heard. I am so blessed to be a part of a creative enterprise that showcases representations of POCs, women and minorities in ways that defy the norm. We’re far from perfect (as many of you have pointed out) but I’m glad we’re doing our part to elevate the game.

I’m loving this dialogue, even as I find irony in those who continue to lament my participation in the fandom because the foundational boundaries between audience and artist have been dismantled (4th Wall We Hardly Knew Ya). I think people sometimes misunderstand my intention and attention —

I would still be a rabid fan of Sleepy Hollow (and an active although more anonymous part of the fandom) even if I didn’t have the ridiculous good fortune to be on the show.

I endeavor to continue being an active listener with all of you, to maintain my unapologetic silliness in terms of what I post on the Tumblrs and the Twitters and most importantly to be an on-going and passionate part of the creation and evolution of one of the most bat-shit crazy and absolutely awesome shows on television.

Thanks for teaching me, for sharing your creativity with me and my colleagues and for caring enough to keep coming back.

I can promise you that the upcoming episodes of the show will make what you’ve seen so far look like child’s play.

That is all.

Help! Orlando Jones is invading my fannish space!

And it’s awesome.

The contrast between the thoughtful, groundbreaking, drolly insightful things the makers of Sleepy Hollow are doing both in and out of the show and the over-the-top ridiculous occultish/religious horror of the show itself is almost enough to make me enjoy the latter as intentional camp.

Almost.

Spartan.
This boat looked like a wreck (okay, she didn’t look this good) for years and just sat across the museum on a lawn.
And then one day she disappeared. And then a few years later she sailed up to the Rendezvous and everyone was like “Holy Balls wow.”
It was really incredible and kinda beautiful and a little like seeing a friend after a long time and its really nice to know they’re doing really well.

For those of you who are looking for more vlog/classic lit based webseries.

Here’s “A Tell Tale Vlog.” Yes that means Edgar Allen Poe.

I’m a big fan of Poe so I’m happy to see this.

And no, I have nothing to do with this.

We are CRAZY SUPER flattered that berniesucreative genius behind The Lizzie Bennet Diaries, posted about A Tell Tale Vlog! We can be honest now, this whole series was just a ploy to get his attention. Thanks for the kind words, berniesu!

@brentmbailey Here is another #tbt to 2010 with #gigidarcy and #alexknightley #lizziebennetdiaries #emmaapproved @allisonpaigen

My brain just exploded. It’s OK I wasn’t using it.

So this was a flirtation that never amounted to anything because by the time Knightley got up the courage to ask GiGi out? Wickham was back in the picture. And Knightley had to watch that go down. And he bought GiGi ice cream and DVDs of You’ve Got Mail and A Room With a View at 2 AM when she couldn’t sleep. She needed a friend. So he was that friend. Just a friend.

And because I am truly horrible person and should be pelted with rotting gourds… I’m going to say that eventually GiGi put on red lipstick and went over to his place with intentions. But when she arrived she found Knightley’s old friend Emma had arrived unexpectedly on his doorstep because she needed a place to crash. And even though they were like brother and sister—GiGi got a weird vibe about the whole thing and decided it was all for the best. Because little sisters are not quite so handsy.

Approved. And very much enjoyed.

HALP.

Linda really wants to get another dog. For me the memory of taking Toby on his last visit to the vet is still too fresh. But she’s been wearing me down.

If she followed my Tumblr I wouldn’t dare reblog this, because I know exactly what effect it would produce.

Yay! It’s probably funnier if you’ve read any Poe, just as an fyis. Especially The Raven, Tell-Tale Heart, and/or Cask of Amontillado. I assume these can probably be found online though.

Just burned through them all. Liked them a lot. Thanks for the recommendation!

“Well, what’s wrong with that?”

“How’s anyone supposed to know they are special?”

Just a small sketch I did after having finished Fangirl. Went out to get a Starbucks this morning as I had been craving one pretty much since I started the book. Sadly no pumpkin for me. Absolutely loved the book. Made me want to go back to University so badly.

“As for Charlotte herself, I had never paid much attention to spiders until a few years ago. Once you begin watching spiders, you haven’t time for much else—-the world is really loaded with them. I do not find them repulsive or revolting, any more than I find anything in nature repulsive or revolting, and I think it is too bad that children are often corrupted by their elders in this hate campaign. Spiders are skilful, amusing and useful. and only in rare instances has anybody ever come to grief because of a spider.”

I’m a fangirl of Fangirl

Wednesday, October 23rd, 2013

emily-librarian:

(NB: I’m pretending I have not taken an ages long hiatus here. Just keeping calm and trying to tumbl on.)

YOU GUYS: I stayed up way too late last night, Cath-style, to binge read Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell. And it. was. amazing. Like, I loved Eleanor and Park. But my feelings about Fangirl are in a different category. Maybe it’s because I fit perfectly into the category of new adult, and also am a young adult librarian. Maybe it’s because I’m so not any of the characters in the book, and yet I have seen what they have seen in my real life. I laughed, I cried, I stayed up late. Luckily my dog can sleep through everything and does not mind if I have to take a quick cry break and wipe my tears on his paws, or if I keep the light on well past bedtime.

Sigh. And this, just days after finishing Rose Under Fire. And a week after The Girl Who Soared Over Fairyland and Cut the Moon in Two. September and October have thus far been filled with publishing magic, as far as I’m concerned.

Also, Fangirl inspired me to write. While it consumed my Tuesday evening – thus reinforcing my opinion that I don’t have time for extracurricular writing – it left me wanting to recapture some of the magic of my halcyon college days which were chock-full of writing of all kinds. I wrote essays, long and short, I wrote stories, poems, newspaper articles, and editorials. I lived and breathed words like Cath thinks she does and seems to or wants to and then eventually really does (no spoiler). I write at work, sure, but I never linger over coffee while letting my fingers and brain have a special time together. I never indulge in frenzied I-am-a-genius-hear-me-roar writing sessions. I’m old and have a job, says the girl with an excuse for everything.

I’m going to fangirl Fangirl in my own special way by allowing what has been unlocked in my brain/heart/soul to come out a little bit maybe. We’ll see.
