YES. This just made our day.

You know how Tumblr ships the creators of Elementary and Sleepy Hollow, collectively, and gets super excited when they interact with each other? That’s how I feel about AoJE and ATTV.

To repeat something I’ve said before: There was a point in the latter half of LBD when some of the negative fan response was getting really ugly, and I had to back away from some people whose commentary I’d previously really looked forward to. I kept thinking: guys, I get that with the benefit of hindsight the show has fallen short of what it could have been. The people who made it weren’t you. They had different goals. They worked under constraints that are hard to appreciate from outside.

But one of the great things about LBD is that it demonstrates how you as a critic aren’t limited to telling us what they did wrong and how much better you could do. You can show us — by making your own show. It’s that cheap.

At first when I said that it was hurt fefes. Oh yeah? You think you could do better? Why don’t you prove it? But then I realized, srsly, why don’t you? Everyone should make a web series. Let a thousand flowers bloom.

Many of the resulting shows will be silly and amateurish, because for all their failings the people behind LBD are freakishly good at what they do, and make it look easy when in fact it’s hard. And some shows will die on the vine, because no one is getting paid, and the effort to make something even halfway good is insane.

But when the thousand flowers have bloomed a few of them will be beautiful.

I feel so grateful for shows like AoJE and ATTV. Not just for the enjoyment I get from watching them, or the sense of community I get from sharing them with other fans. I feel grateful because their creators restore my faith in humanity.

People who are publicly snarky and mean just because someone tried to create something and ended up falling short make me sad. They make me angry. They make me embarrassed to be a member of the same species.

Alysson, Nessa, Sean, Sinead, Yulin, and your dozens of collaborators: You’re the opposite of that. Your talent and perseverance in making these shows, your courage and generosity in sending them out into the world, make me proud to be a human being. You’re inspiring.

Also: Perfect.

Thanks.
