Look at this tree, man.

The Angel Oak Tree is estimated to be in excess of 1500 years old, stands 66.5 ft (20 m) tall, measures 28 ft (8.5 m) in circumference, and produces shade that covers 17,200 square feet (1,600 m2). From tip to tip Its longest branch distance is 187 ft.

re: last one pretty sure totally clear pee isn’t necessarily a good thing

Totally clear pee is probably pure water. You’re drinking a lot of water, more than what the body requires so is basically just pouring it out do it is inability to store it.

Best pee colour? Yellow. Not dark yellow, certainly not brown, but yellow indictions you’ve got a good amount of water in your system but also you’re removing excess ions and ammonia as well.

Also, “what would I do if I wasn’t afraid?” Probably things that would result in injury and/or getting fired. Being afraid can be quite useful. ;)

I’ve got two events in Saint Paul this week. A bunch of excellent librarians made this happen after I was disinvited from Anoka County, Minn., last month because a high school student’s parents objected to Eleanor & Park. Read more about that challenge here and here and here.

He’s the stand-in at the movie set who does the porn scene over and over with the blonde woman, then acts adorably awkward when he actually asks her out, after spending days literally massaging her breasts and standing naked with her in front of a room full of people simulating various kinds of sex.

Panel on censorship, YA lit, and kids’ right to read:

Rainbow Rowell is going to be participating in a panel on censorship at Metropolitan State University in St. Paul this coming Tuesday night. Given the recent history of bullying adults trying to restrict Minnesota teens’ access to her book Eleanor & Park, I wish I could be there in solidarity.

Snowy Plover

Fun fact: That’s a snowy plover dad. The mom leaves soon after the eggs hatch, while dad sticks around to rear the chick(s).

Western snowy plovers have been making a comeback lately, expanding their breeding range southward into parts of the Southern California coast where they bred historically, but where they’d been missing for the past several decades as a result of human impacts on their habitat.

At the Coal Oil Point reserve near UC Santa Barbara, a small number of breeding pairs were discovered a few years ago. With some suggestive fencing (really just twine strung between stakes), some signs, and a docent program to ask people not to throw frisbees in the dunes or let their dogs run off-leash, the population has grown, with nearby locations to the south (like the sandspit near the Santa Barbara breakwater) subsequently seeing their first successful plover breeding attempts in decades.

I live about 10 miles further south along the coast, in Carpinteria. Last summer my friend and fellow birder Eric Culbertson, walking on a seldom-accessed section of Carpinteria beach that is usually isolated by high tides, came across an adult snowy plover male with a chick. It was the first time snowy plovers had been known to breed on this beach in many years, and it made me really happy.

I know it’s just one species, one that gets attention because it’s cute and charismatic, and the problem of human-caused extinction reaches much, much further. But I like the story because it teaches that by paying attention to the natural world, learning how it works and applying that knowledge, we can make a difference. Living things are tough and resourceful (even when they’re also cute and fluffy). Sometimes they just need a little help.

bourbakiaxiom:

I finally finished Eleanor & Park by Rainbow Rowell – and it was great! As a tribute, here is my copy, with some concert stubs from the relevant era (annoying not to be able to find my Dead Kennedys one, from 1984…)

Sad to think of this book being banned in some US schools: it is both good and true.

That’s really cool. I wish I’d hung onto some of the ephemera from that era. I saw U2 on their first US trip, and XTC opening for the Police. I bet Park would approve.

But I wasn’t interested in hanging onto mementos for the benefit of my 51-year-old self.

By the way, that Marcia Wallace post I just reblogged made me cry. I just spent the last month watching the first eleven seasons of The Simpsons. Hearing that Marcia has passed away is like losing a good friend. Mrs. Krabappel has always been one of my favorites and it’s just hard to know that…

I liked her a lot when I was growing up, and she played the secretary on the Bob Newhart show.

Saturday, October 26th, 2013

Nobody has ever told me why my mother was targeted that day. The media reported that the attack was on a car, but there is no road alongside my mother’s house. Several reported the attack was on a house. But the missiles hit a nearby field, not a house. All reported that five militants were killed. Only one person was killed – a 67-year-old grandmother of nine.

My three children – 13-year-old Zubair, nine-year-old Nabila and five-year-old Asma – were playing nearby when their grandmother was killed. All of them were injured and rushed to hospitals. Were these children the “militants” the news reports spoke of? Or perhaps, it was my brother’s children? They, too, were there. They are aged three, seven, 12, 14, 15 and 17 years old. The eldest four had just returned from a day at school, not long before the missile struck.

But the United States and its citizens probably do not know this. No one ever asked us who was killed or injured that day. Not the United States or my own government. Nobody has come to investigate nor has anyone been held accountable. Quite simply, nobody seems to care.

Night on Bald Mountain sequence in Disney’s Fantasia (1940)

We watched Fantasia a lot while our children were growing up. I think this was my favorite piece (though depending on my mood it would sometimes be the Rite of Spring dinosaurs — I wonder if any gifs of that are floating around).

Courtney Shields (@CBShields): My final ep w/ @TheAoJEOfficial! I know our fans are eager to get Jane home – thankyou for indulging Johanna! #aoje (https://twitter.com/CBShields/status/394175555567775744)

I’m going to miss Johanna!

I’m going to miss her too. Today’s episode was very different in tone, wasn’t it? It was written by Ryan Bright, who previously wrote Charades (ep. 22) and Babies (ep. 29). I take it he’s a humor kind of guy, since the three episodes he’s written are the ones that struck me as the funniest, and today’s, which he also directed, probably goes the farthest of any episode I can remember in terms of going for full-on comedy.

All previous episodes were directed by Nessa. I’m curious about the backstory behind Ryan doing this one, and wonder if there will be more director substitutions going forward, or it this was a one-time thing.

Saturday, October 26th, 2013

I lived in Los Angeles from the age of ten (and really, from the age of two, if you count the eastern reaches of the sprawl). As an adult I escaped once, returned a few years later, then escaped again, hopefully for good. Looking at this image reminds me of all the contradictory feelings I have about it, but especially of the combined claustrophobia and agoraphobia, the sense of being hemmed in by an expanse with no visible edges.
