I wish I could see it! But I just am not very good at getting up when it’s still dark. I have enough trouble getting up, period.

It’s definitely an acquired skill.

I just recently watched Northanger Abbey, and I enjoyed it–it’s much more of a comedy than North & South. In terms of prioritising, I guess I’d want to know which ones you still haven’t seen. If you want more Gaskell, Wives & Daughters is also good, and also a bit lighter than North & South. I also liked the Cranford adaptations.

With the exception of that Northanger Abbey, I believe I’ve seen all the recent Austen adaptations. I also saw the recent BBC Cranford adaptation, and have generally seen most (though not all) of the period drama/romance movies that have come out in the past few decades.

I’ll put that Northanger Abbey adaptation on my list. Thanks!

What did it sound like?

It’s interesting; there are many examples on YouTube, but most of them seem to be regional “accents” with shorter and less-varied songs than the one that prompted my post.

This one is pretty close:

Yes, you need the audiobook. I didn’t actually get the book book because I knew I would rather hear MKW read it. I’m about an hour into it so far and she is GREAT.

I know, right?

I got the audiobook and started over from the beginning, even though I’d read the first 6 chapters or so already. She talked in her video about how anxious she felt because “doing voices isn’t my thing”, but so far I think she’s doing a great job. I was listening to the first Lizzie/Lydia scene at the gym this morning and her Ashley!Lizzie was amazing.

I love how your reactions were so similar, down to the repeated interrobangs.

Yes! I realize! :-) It was, in fact, the two of you being so enthusiastic about the adaptation that finally woke me up to the magnitude of my oversight.

Fixing it soon. Thank you both!

Wow, that sounds exciting–4 boats so close together–and I’m glad that SCA hasn’t had to drop out. I hope the next few hours go well for them! I don’t remember how many teams there are total.

There are 7 teams. Vestas broke their boat in leg 2, and Dongfeng broke their mast in this leg, so there will only be 5 finishers.

I had no idea there were so many activities that would have qualified if only I’d engaged in them today.

But nope, it wasn’t tennis.

Jogging?

No, but a really good guess, in that I did previously jog, and I did pretty much stop around that time, when my right knee started complaining.

Followup hint: I actually kind of tweaked the same knee in the course of today’s activity. But this was way more fun than jogging. Because jogging is the worst, Sally. I mean, I know it keeps you healthy. But God, at what cost?

Rule change: In the interest of fun, I’m rescinding my earlier “only one guess per tumblr account” rule. As of now, each tumblr user can make unlimited guesses, though they must wait to hear if their latest guess is correct or not before making another. So anyone who’s already guessed and been told they were wrong may now guess again if they want to.

eeek! that’s scary.

I felt like I owed it to her, after pointing out that Leg 2 video in which she had to go up when the boat was pitching violently and she ended up seasick. This one is much more the kind of trip to the masthead that a bow person probably would want to have immortalized.

So the boat is broken—is it beyond repair? Will they get a new boat for the next leg? (I assume they have to abandon this leg?)

Based on the small amount of information to come out so far, there is a tiny chance that the boat can still be saved. If that happens, the team could make repairs and ship the boat to a future stopover — maybe Auckland? — so the crew could resume racing there.

But it’s unlikely. The location where they went aground is too remote, and every hour that passes before a salvage vessel reaches the scene reduces their chances. It was near high tide when they went aground, which may have bought them a few hours, but the weather shore of a coral reef with an ocean swell breaking on it is not a place where a boat can survive for long.

There is no other boat for them to use. The race is strictly one-design, and only seven Volvo Ocean 65s have ever been built. There has been talk of building several more for the next race three years from now (along with re-using the current ones), assuming the race can attract sufficient sponsors for that. But for this race, Team Vestas Wind is probably done.

anonsally replied to your post: Video updates regarding Vestas Wind

So, is there a… protocol or something for this type of situation? Like, does the nearest boat come to rescue the sailors on the wreck? Does that mean that Team Alvimedica is forfeiting their place in this leg too? Just curious how it works…

It’s explicit in the racing rules that safety comes before competition, but the rule is kind of an afterthought; it’s just a fact that sailors at sea are going to stop and help each other regardless of what’s happening with the race. There’s a lot of history, in the Volvo/Whitbread and other races, of boats suspending racing to help competitors in distress. And just as a practical matter, the places this particular race goes, a lot of time the competitors are going to be the closest available aid.

The race control jury will meet and probably will come up with some kind of make-good such that Alvimedica isn’t penalized for helping. It could be that Alvimedica is awarded points for the leg consistent with the position they were in when they suspended racing. Or they may be allowed to resume racing with a time adjustment they can subtract from their finish time to account for the time spent assisting Vestas. Or something else.

I didn’t realise the teams were so international.

I was surprised by that too. Seeing the mix of nationalities of each team was my main motivation for making those in the first place. I’d looked through the team rosters before, but having it displayed graphically with the little flags helps my brain process it better.

It’s interesting to me that the least diverse team is Dongfeng, with just 3 countries represented.

Oh wow, that’s long-term. But there are breaks, so it sounds like they can see their families?

Yes; that video I posted earlier today about the surprise video on Dongfeng with greetings from family and loved ones was a little misleading about that. They’re racing for a long time, but the individual legs, even the longer ones, take less than a month to complete.

The families typically fly in and meet them at the stopovers. Expect to see many joyous arrival videos, and subsequent tearful departure videos.

Approximately how long will the race take?

The race overall consists of 9 ocean legs, plus short in-port races that happen during the stopovers and are scored as a separate competition.

Leg 1 (the one they’re sailing now) should finish in Cape Town by early November. The start of Leg 2 (which finishes in Abu Dhabi) is on November 19. And so on around the world, until the final ocean leg finishes in Gothenburg, Sweden, in late June 2015.
