Attack of the whirligig beetles

I don’t know of any other sport that works like this, where the amount of effort the athletes expend can be inversely proportional to their actual progress. But it’s totally the case in sailboat racing. The light stuff can mean constant sail changes and maneuvers, all in drifting conditions where you see a bit of flotsam alongside and you’re still next to it minutes later.

The tracker headings are averaged over the previous 15 minutes. It seems weird that the boats would spend time actually sailing away from their destination, but it’s all about the wind. If there’s a ruffle on the water anywhere nearby you have to fight to get to it, even if it means going backwards for a bit. Anything to get moving.
