Closing In

The Volvo fleet is heading north through the Arabian Sea, with Brunel, Dongfeng, and ADOR currently 1-2-3. If they finish in that order it will be kind of cool, because it will mean they’ve inverted the top three positions from Leg 1, and with the low-point scoring they’ll be in a three-way tie going into Leg 3:

  • ADOR: 1 + 3 = 4
  • Dongfeng: 2 + 2 = 4
  • Brunel: 3 + 1 = 4

The current order could definitely change, though. It’s pretty much a drag race from here to the easternmost tip of Oman, but once they’re in the Gulf of Oman the wind gets really tricky, with lots of calms and important strategic decisions.

Farther back, Alvimedica has moved past Mapfre and SCA continues in last place, though again, there’s a chance of some shuffling once the boats hit the inshore racing at the end.

At the Vestas Wind press call-in yesterday there wasn’t much news; they’re looking at building a new boat to rejoin the fleet at a later point in the race, but haven’t made a firm decision on that yet. If they do re-enter the race I hope it will be in time for Leg 5, which starts from Auckland on March 15. I know that would be a really tight schedule, and might not be realistic. But if you’re not going to do the Southern Ocean/Cape Horn leg it doesn’t really feel like the Whitbread/Volvo to me.
