I especially liked Yulin fangirling at the end. As a fan of Yulin fangirling, I feel like Yulin fangirling has its own coherent and compelling narrative arc.

This is my favorite Yulin fangirling so far.

Ivan Konstantinovich Aivazovsky – Sunset, Crimea [1865] on Flickr.

This work is an elegant example of the beauty of the artist’s smaller works and his talent in conveying the effects of the setting sun on the water. It was completed in 1865, during an exceptionally prolific period. ‘Between 1862 and 1867…he painted more than two hundred pictures, not counting the small ones, of which he painted many.’

Red sky at night

The sunset as the teams left Cape Town was beautiful.

Yann Riou on Dongfeng got footage of someone (maybe Kevin Escoffier?) working the bow, with Mapfre ahead of them. Corinna Halloran on SCA videoed Annie Lush (I think?) grinding with Alvimedica to leeward.

I’m happy to have the on-board videos again. I wish all the teams were as good as Dongfeng and SCA about posting them quickly with minimal post-OBR editing.

As the sun set SCA was leading, though just barely. Then they and Mapfre tacked inshore a little early, sailed into lighter wind, and had to tack out again, causing them to fall behind the other five boats. Around 2315 UTC Vestas also got burned from being too far inshore and had to tack out.

At sunrise SCA was at the back of the fleet with Vestas a mile and half to starboard and Mapfre three miles ahead. Throughout the day today, SCA has seemed a bit off the pace, though it’s hard to tell why from the tracker. Lighter wind? Steering/trimming? Sail selection? Weed on the keel? As of the 1540 update, SCA and Vestas are trailing the fleet, about 12 miles behind current leader Alvimedica.

Winds were lighter than expected this morning (Stacey Jackson talks about that in the SCA video), but were back up to the mid-20s in the latest update. The boats have finished beating, and now are reaching southeast toward stronger wind. Tonight they’ll cross the Agulhas Current, which tends to build up nasty waves as it flows counter to the wind. Hopefully everything on the boats holds together.

Yulin’s twitter is the main reason I regret not spending more time on twitter. Because when she’s too busy making cool things to tease properly here, she still manages to find time to tease over there.

The Gouache Colored Collages of Fabienne Rivory

Fabienne Rivory is a French artist who is making artwork that blends paint and photography since 2007. She loves to explore interactions between photography and painting, real world and imagination, memories and reality. Her paintings of the series ‘Miroir’ are made of watercolor or inks that are then digitally combined with photos. The finished works contain a certain vibrancy and mediate a more subjective and poetic vision. ‘These are dreamed images trying to recreate a momentary emotion that anyone can feel in front of nature’s beauty, a particular architectural shape, a landscape passing by or the silhouette of a beloved one.’

Leg 2 Start

That was so much fun. The start was basically a circus, complete with clown car, when all the boats came into the third mark with 30+ knots of wind, then sailed into a hole and stopped right at the mark. First out of the clown car: SCA, yay! They moved from back to front by cutting back toward shore, sailing away from the next mark but toward the wind, catching it first and moving into the lead.

SCA dropped back a few positions as the boats rounded the final “departure” buoy and headed south, but then made a good call in another parking lot under the mountains and regained the lead as the sun was setting and the live coverage ended.

Can’t wait to see what happens next.

Timestamps of highlights after a cut.

  • 9:52 – live coverage starts
  • 14:00 – prestart
  • 15:16 – start
  • 39:00 – clown-car mark rounding
  • 40:30 – SCA’s inshore pass
  • 54:00 – final turning mark (departure buoy)
  • 1:17:00 – SCA regains the lead
  • 1:25:00 – helicopter shot (briefly interrupted by simulation) of Sophie Ciszek working the bow on SCA
  • 1:27:30 – Alan Block (Mr. Clean of Sailing Anarchy) makes a final comment noting the history of fatalities in the race and wishing all the boats a safe journey

rhamphotheca:

A Storm in the Rocky Mountains, Mt. Rosalie is an oil painting on canvas completed by Albert Bierstadt in 1866 and now held by the Brooklyn Museum. Inspired by sketches of the Southern Rocky Mountains, it depicts Native American hunter/gatherers hunting deer in the foreground, as the Rockies tower above them; some are cast in sun, while others are covered in clouds. Mount Evans, depicted in the painting, was at the time unnamed; Bierstadt christened it Mount Rosalie, for his friend’s wife Rosalie Osborne.

Alan Block (“Mr. Clean” of Sailing Anarchy)…

Alan Block (“Mr. Clean” of Sailing Anarchy) interviews Sam Davies in Cape Town on the eve of Leg 2.

In the Sailing Anarchy thread where he posted the video he labeled it “my crush.” The video description says “dreamy.” I’d comment on that except, well, (mumble) reasons.

Good interview, including detailed discussion of the whole “Person in charge” vs. “Skipper” thing. In general, his interviews of people in Cape Town over the last few days have been great. It’s basically just him with an iPhone running around talking to people. Too bad he’s not planning to be at the Abu Dhabi or Sanya stopovers.

i-got-my-wish-i-suppose:

So I had a rehearsal at my old school for a music performance thing (carols and such) and we were practicing in the old chapel which has the most amazing acoustics.

Long story short we were mucking around and singing and this popped into my head and i had to record it. I can’t do Reuben justice but none the less this song is the bomb and you should always put good acoustics to use.

Figured I would share it anyway.

(the original is by reuben hudson and you should definitely listen to it and love it forever.)

Stunning!

shootingmovies: Interstellar (2014) – Christopher Nolan 5…

shootingmovies:

Interstellar (2014) – Christopher Nolan

5 bullets on this film:

  • I’m crying as I write this. Literally. It’s really sad. Like, really. You will probably have an existencial crisis.
  • The main theme is so cool and exciting.
  • I want Matthew McConaughey to be my father (what)
  • Yeah, it’s a bit long, but the special effects surprise you and it’s like watching a 3D movie for the first time.
  • The story is veery well written and unpredictable.

I was prepared to dislike this movie. After Gravity, which I know many people loved, positive buzz for a big-budget sci fi film isn’t enough. I have to know: is the writing going to actively insult my intelligence?

Especially early on, Interstellar kind of tiptoed right up to that line. But then, having set up the story it wanted to tell, it did something I very much appreciated: it stepped back from it. It said, in effect, “We know these parts don’t necessarily make sense. So let’s push them away and focus on the actually-interesting story we want to tell.”

It’s basically the same story Heinlein told in his 1956 novel Time for the Stars. And as it turns out, that’s kind of a great thing for a modern sci fi film to aspire to. Don’t worry about being as intellectually legitimate and compelling as good adult sci fi. Just be as good as good juvenile sci fi of 50 years ago. Because even that is way above the standard of a modern effects movie.

See it with a good sound system if you can. I loved all the visual and sonic homages to other great movies, but most of all I loved the score toward the end, with its echo of the closing notes of Koyaanisqatsi.

It’s not perfect. It’s sometimes kind of cheesy, kind of talky, earnest in a way that might not sit well, especially if you go in expecting a thrill ride with popcorn.

I wasn’t looking for that, and didn’t miss it when I didn’t get it. But sitting in the theater, watching some of those slow, emotional scenes playing out early in the movie, was kind of thrilling. Not because of any fireworks on screen. But because of what the movie is brave enough to be.
