Dongfeng’s navigator Pascal Bidégorry made a bold move by calling for a route through the middle of the Cape Verde Islands, but it seems to be working so far.

Vestas and Mapfre hedged their bets, covering Dongfeng’s move by sailing through the islands farther west, then heading south to close with them.

The other four boats (ADOR, Brunel, Alvimedica, and SCA) all went north of the islands, though the two trailing boats in that group have now gybed and sailed south somewhat while ADOR and Brunel continue westward.

So there’s a real split now, with Dongfeng’s track more than 100 nm south of that of ADOR and Brunel. It will be interesting to see what develops over the next few days. All the boats eventually have to leave the trade winds and sail south through the equatorial doldrums to round the island of Fernando off the coast of Brazil. But that’s a thousand miles away.
