Whoa. That’s a big split for SCA. They’re 32 miles from the leaders. But given that separation it’s entirely possible that going off in their own direction really is their fastest available route.

Being close to the African coast has (mostly) been fast lately. Wind speeds are low across the fleet; mostly 10 to 11 knots. So maybe they’ll be able to make up some of the distance over the next several hours.

It’s kind of funny to me how similar this first part of the Volvo has been in terms of sailing conditions to the kind of offshore racing I did growing up in Southern California. One thing is definitely different, though: the longest race I ever did was from San Francisco to Newport Beach, and took about as much time as the VOR racers have already been racing. But they’re just getting started.
