Hey, I’m sorry if this is super weird, but you’re beautiful, and I wondered if you’d ever thought about doing any topless pics?

Wednesday, March 19th, 2014

Thank you for your kind inquiry. If you do not mind, I will impart some gentle advice to guide you in further communications.

Weigh the probability. I am an author of books for young adults. Does it strike you as likely that I would go casting about in my public tumblr box for people to take photos of my chesticular bookends? Normally, I find questions about books. And while everyone likes a change now and again, there is such a thing as too much change. If you were to work the numbers,  what do you think the actual chances were that I was going to reply in the affirmative? Were they high? If they were, it seems within reason that you might have been in a similar condition. No. The chances were never good. So either you are an eternal optimist (and we certainly need optimists), or this was written with some other intent in mind.

I realize you didn’t come to me looking for advice on how to communicate, much in the same way that I did not come to you looking to have topless pictures taken—but here we are together. Let us make the most of it!

The key to any effective letter is this: know your audience! Everything stems from that critical piece of knowledge. You had a moment of self-awareness in the first part of your sentence. Pause there and reflect. Asking women you don’t know (or often those you do) if they want to take some topless pictures is almost a guarantee of weird. This is why Hallmark doesn’t make a “how about some topless pictures?” card. You hovered on the edge of wisdom, and you retreated. Do not retreat, my friend.

With that, I must offer my regrets. But I do not want to leave you without recourse. Have you heard of the author Nicolas Sparks? Perhaps you could make a similar inquiry to him? Or would that not be appropriate?

I will leave it up to your best judgement.

What’s up with Kissing in the Rain?

Wednesday, March 19th, 2014

stpauligirl:

I was a HUGE fan of the Lizzie Bennet Diaries, and I am also incredibly pleased with The Autobiography of Jane Eyre.

However, after the spectacular disappointment of Emma Approved (I only made it through about 8 or 9 episodes before giving up) I have been hesitant to start watching any more web series.

Which brings me to Kissing in the Rain. Many of the people I follow and whose tastes in media I share are watching this. But I am not.

I am a little confused by all the screen caps and gifs I am seeing. Aren’t there only 2 episodes? I don’t understand where all this content is coming from. Also, the difference between canon and fan-canon.

So basically my questions are thus: Is the writing good? (This is ESSENTIAL.) Is the acting good? Why should I be watching this series?

I can’t speak for anyone else. (And luckily I don’t have to, because many someones else are already speaking for themselves.) But speaking for myself:

  • Yes, there are only two episodes (so far). And those episodes are actually pretty short (just a couple of minutes and change for each). But they are conceptually rich, with many layers of backstory and meta. It was intentionally written to provide a small window into a larger world.
  • Where all the content is coming from: As I said, lots of layers. The episodes themselves feature two actors performing a scene in a movie, then an off-camera director says “cut!”, and then you get a scene of the actors interacting between takes. There are companion drabbles that provide additional backstory written by Yulin Kuang, the show runner/writer/director. And there’s lots of fanfic, some of which has been made canonical. (See below.)
  • Fan-canon is just what the fans are writing and speculating. But some of the fan-canon gets blessed by Yulin into being canon-canon, by virtue of being reblogged to the show’s main tumblr account. At that point it’s part of the “official” story. See About the Experiment.
  • Q: Is the writing good? A: Oh yes.
  • Q: Is the acting good? A: Oh my god yes.
  • Why should I be watching this series? See above. Also, as someone who also is an LBD and AoJE fan, and was disappointed by some aspects of Emma Approved, I’ve found KiTR to be exactly what I’m looking for in a web series.

You owe it to yourself to check it out. I don’t think you’ll be disappointed.

Wednesday, March 19th, 2014

One of my favorite Deb Talan songs. I love how in the (live) recording, you can almost hear a hesitation before the applause. It’s the first song on the album, and my head-canon is that it’s the first song she performed in the set, and most of the crowd is thinking, oooookay. Is every song going to be about molluscs?

Yes! Yes they are! (Well, no. That’s just me. But it would have been cool if they were.)

I saw Bluenose II last fall and we realized we could put Lynx in her mainsail.  She’s a big schooner.

I think it’s cool that people used to use these boats for work. And part of the work is racing.

Tuesday, March 18th, 2014

“And here is the most important thing I’ve learned from 10 years in this world: fandom is about people. It is not about a tv show or a ship, it’s not about a character or a creator or about that one fanfic that changed the way you regard fanfic as a whole. Fandom is about finding people who love what you love. It’s about finding someone in Israel who has the same reaction to Milo Ventimiglia’s bottom lip, or someone in Singapore who will share in your Downton Abbey geekery, or someone in Michigan who knows what you mean when you can’t express your emotions beyond “!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.” And who will then ask you about your day, or send you a link they know will make you laugh, or recommend something else (a tv show, band, podcast, book, youtube video) they know you’re going to love. Because they know you.”

Kissing in the Rain (Episode 1)

I’ve always wanted to make one of these melty crayon rain things…AND NOW I HAVE A VAILD REASON TO. *does crafty dance* This is Lily and James from shipwreckedcomedy‘s Kissing in the Rain. GO WATCH IT – IT’S MY NEW FAVORITE THING.

OMFG HAVE YOU SEEN THIS. HAS EVERYONE SEEN THIS? BECAUSE THIS IS AMAZING. I have always loved those melty crayon rain things too and this is just effing awesome, I want to hang it on my wall or something this is just too great I can’t ugh HI I LOVE YOU KATIE.

YULIN CAN THIS EXIST IN THE CANON? I mean, like, a mega talented fan of James & Lily’s first movie (one who has been all about the #ishipit hastag), creates this wonderful artwork and she sends it into the studio to be given to Lily and James? One for each of them?

and now i wait for someone else to add to this headcanon what they think james and lily would each do with their new artwork. and who would get which one.

This is the first fanmail James has ever received.

Dear 10-Year-Old Self,

Before you ask me when you have your first kiss or if you’ll ever have a boyfriend, I need to tell you some more important stuff first. What’s more important than a first kiss, you ask? Plenty.

First of all, don’t let that kid in your class, Danny, who called you fat, make you self-consciously wear oversized sweatshirts for the next four years to hide your body. That kid is horrible and years from now he will be boring and bald and trying to get in touch with you to come to the set of the TV show you work on. No, you don’t work on Cheers. That show’s not on the air anymore. That would’ve been awesome, though.

Another thing: Say thank you, always. Gratitude is the closest thing to beauty manifested in an emotion. When you’re grateful, people are attracted to you.

Also: Make sure you appreciate Mom and Dad. Yes, they never seem to let you do anything now except read books. Once you turn 18 you’ll never get to live with them again, and you’ll live far away, and you will miss them so much it hurts.

Next: Learn forgiveness and bestow it generously.

Finally: Don’t let anyone give you any crap. Mastering a balance of these last two will take you a lifetime, so you had better get started now.

Mindy Kaling

I just really wanna know about how they made it rain I want to see pictures of the rigs

I have a whole video for that once the series is concluded. I scoured the internet looking up different rain rigs, we landed on two of which were quite simple and one which was a little more involved with PVC pipe and sprinkler head nozzles. We used different rigs in different shots. Our DP

onthewallnow

figured out where the rain could fall in relation to the lights and camera – lights are just important as the rigs themselves to get the rain to read on camera. We ran camera tests of the rain before production to compare how the rigs worked individually. My lovely mechanical engineering roommate who designs theme parks and roller coasters as her real life job helped me a lot through the building of the main rig.
