Monty Python’s The Meaning Of Life

Guys this skit came out in the 1960s

No, it didn’t. The Meaning of Life came out in 1983. I know, because I saw it it in the theater the week it opened with my high school buddies. We didn’t know anything about it going in, and were expecting something with a narrative like Holy Grail or Life of Brian. From the opening short feature (The Crimson Permanent Assurance) we realized something was up.

Seeing the Mr. Creosote scene in that crowded theater, surrounded by an audience that had no idea what was coming, was the most memorable movie-going experience I’ve ever had. The audience was equally divided between people screaming and people laughing to the point of tears; by the end of the scene everyone had done both.

“Lies” – Korn, from their self-titled debut album, 1994

Songs called “Lies”, 9th in a series

I’ve listened to a lot of music I otherwise wouldn’t have listened to because of my son. So I have more familiarity than I otherwise would with what I think of as “angry young man” music that traces its origins back to Korn’s debut album, which apparently is something of an ur-recording that ushered in the “nu metal” genre. The guttural screaming vocals in particular, that you can hear some of here, are apparently a big thing these days. I’m sure they have been for a while now. But it took having a teenage son in charge of the car’s audio for me to realize it.

I know there’s always been an element in rock that speaks to the frustrations of young male listeners, their brains practically swimming in testosterone, their parents relentlessly hassling them about their grades, the objects of their barely-manageable sexual urges seemingly out of reach…

God, being a teenage male sucked. I realize now that being a teenage female would have sucked even more, but that’s no comfort to the me-of-the-past I remember being.

Those movies that offer the fantasy of going back to high school, outwardly the age you were then but able to relive those experiences with adult perspective and coping skills, exert a powerful pull on me. But without being able to take those adult tools back with me, to just go back and relive it as an actual teen? I don’t think I’d want to.

It was a wonderful time. But it was a terrible time, too. Interacting on Tumblr with people who are or recently were going through that reminds me of that every day. I have a lot of sympathy, and respect, for those of you going through adolescence. Heroes and heroines all.

Lyrics:

I would like to search inside
for all of the things that you will hide
What’s the problem?
Can’t you seem to
search through these problems that haunt and taunt you
I smile, while you’re afraid
Your run, while you’re so in pain

Do you ever see it [out from] outside your fears
Thinking about your life
Thinking about your inner fears

I would like to search inside
for all of the things that you will hide
What’s the problem?
Can’t you seem to open your body and let me touch you

I want to see the life you have disguised
The world of things that hurt you
Kept all these useless lies
I want you to fear, fill you on up inside
Once I took you in, I’ll throw you out next time
I tried, you win
My life is ripping your heart out and destroying my pain!
Go!

modern-vampires-of-art-history:

John Singer Sargent, Carnation, Lily, Lily, Rose (1885) / Vampire Weekend, The Kids Don’t Stand A Chance (2008)

I was reading about Carnation, Lily, Lily, Rose just the other day. Sargent painted it in England, during the interval after his early success as a portraitist in Paris had foundered in the scandal following the exhibition of Madame X. It took Sargent nearly a year to complete it, working in the fall of 1885 and then through the summer and fall of 1886. As dusk approached each day he would set up the girls and props in the garden, then paint rapidly during the few minutes when the light was just right.

The painting was both hailed and criticized by the British art press, but on balance helped cement his standing as an important artist, and the portrait commissions began to pick up again. Within a few years he was acknowledged as one of the leading portraitists in the world, and never again lacked for work.

Carnation, Lily, Lily, Rose is housed at the Tate Britain in London.

Kissing in the Rain: Anne & Gilbert

Kissing in the Rain is so sweet and adorable and hilarious. It’s only two episodes in and it’s already just perfect.

Thank you John!

So hey, could this guy’s face be canon? Like he’s part of the #jily #ishipit movement, and he just posts pictures of himself reacting to his irl otp? This particular photoset would be in reaction to the AoGG trailer on the day it’s released.

THE FACE OF THE FANDOM. i love it.

Haha.

1) Yes, awesome.

2) I love how it continues to put the pressure on Yulin in terms of what she does and doesn’t canonize. Like, is it cool to canonically hoist an actual person in-world and fictionalize him? Not just a fic or a piece of fanart, but an actual person? I realize that’s what happens to actors all the time, but does a fan who posts a picture of himself automatically grant the same kind of license to fictionalize his actual face?

I assume Ricky would be all over it, and like I said, awesome! But still, funny to me that this whole thing continues to be a never-ending series of wormy can openings for Yulin. :-)

philamuseum:

Happy Birthday to John Singer Sargent, born on this day in 1856. Although he lived most of his life in Europe, he still considered himself an American. Both of his parents were raised in the United States, and his father actually grew up right here in Philadelphia!

In the Luxembourg Gardens,” 1879, John Singer Sargent

I was looking at this, and it felt super familiar, not just as a painting I’d seen, but as something I’d seen with real, living people. And then I remembered: It looked similar to one of the sets in Matthew Bourne’s recent production of The Sleeping Beauty.

This picture doesn’t show it quite the way I remember it; my memory is that there was an earlier moment that looked exactly like the painting. But now I’m not sure if that’s just my memory twisting things, or if there actually was a moment in the ballet that intentionally referenced the painting.

Probably the former. But still, now I want to see the ballet again. Not that I’d need an excuse. I’ll see anything by Matthew Bourne any chance I get.

Tumblr Bot has asked what is my earliest human memory.  What other sort does it expect me to have?

Haha. Given that it’s an AI program, maybe it hasn’t figured out yet that human experience is different than its own.

I love this. Fanfic of fanart :)

I loved this too.

The whole KiTR experiment reminds me of some of the most-compelling parts of the LBD transmedia. Not in terms of the specific mode of interaction; it’s obviously different than tweeting back and forth with the LBD characters. But in terms of how it feels, there’s a similar sense of being actively engaged with the ongoing creation of the story.

It’s an opportunity to collaborate with the show’s creators, rather than merely consuming their output. Even just reading along, seeing other fans’ contributions, there’s a wonderful sense of being part of something organic, where something wonderful and unexpected can happen at any moment.

It’s a giant directed improv exercise, where we all get to play along.

I realize that the basic concept isn’t new; people have been doing different versions of this for a while. It’s basically a version of what Welcome to Sanditon tried to do. But this approach, as implemented by this particular team with this particular content in this particular way, is working really well for me.

Wednesday, March 19th, 2014

anxiouswren:

I would like to keep a “bird journal”, where I record every bird I see during the day and do a quick little sketch of it, but I don’t think I’d have the time to keep up with it. Maybe I’ll just do them intermittently, on days where I see notable birds and/or have time! :)

Today I saw the first goldfinches of spring, partaking of the birdfeeder outside the kitchen. :) At the same time, there was a dark-eyed junco, which my brain categorizes as a “winter” bird for my area. Then there were my regulars, a song sparrow and a mourning dove, with a robin skulking in the distance.  I saw the mockingbirds on my way to run errands—they flew right over my window as I was at a red light. Lovely animals!

Something I didn’t really appreciate until I took up bird watching again as an adult, after getting way into it as a kid and then burning out on some of the weirdly competitive humans I encountered doing it, was how wonderful it is to appreciate the “ordinary” birds you see every day.

My wife taught me that (though we weren’t yet married at that point) on our first bird-watching outing together. We went to Will Rogers Park off Sunset in the Palisades, and right as we stepped out of the car she noticed some birds flitting on the ground.

“Oh, they’re so cute! What are they?” she said.

“Dark-eyed juncos,” I said. I assumed we’d be moving on to look for more-interesting birds. But what I learned that day was that spending time looking at an everyday bird with someone you love is about as much fun as you can have bird-watching.

timekiller-s:

Yes. Because all these people going around preaching against vaccination scare the living crap out of me. Although tin all honesty I vaguely remember seeing this illustration elsewhere and many many years ago in an entirely different context.

I still have the scar on my arm from first smallpox vaccination when I was a tot. I don’t enjoy vaccinations, and I am fucking TERRIFIED of needles (yes even sewing needles). But you’d better believe if I need a shot I’ll suck it up and get it.

Sigh. I still get aggravated every time I see Jenny McCarthy’s face on The View on the TV at the gym. Celebrities who use their celebrity status to advocate for things that contribute to a public health problem are… aggravating.
