AoJE’s superpower is its ability to extend the vlog-adaptation format in ways that are unexpected and wonderful, but that make me say afterwards, oh, of COURSE. It’s an obvious thing to do in hindsight, to have an in-world character rewatch Jane’s videos. LBD had it happen a couple of times off-camera, but doing it on-camera was inspired.
Mary gets to be us, the fans watching the videos, and we get to be her. Her reactions mimic ours, but in her case it’s not just willing suspension of disbelief, not just loving the show so much that it becomes, like the Skin Horse, Real. For Mary, Jane is literally real, sitting right next to her, and watching her watch the videos made the show more Real to me than ever.
Awesome episode of awesome show by awesome people is awesome.
