is that tag a typo? ajoe asks? or is it tricky?

Oh, good point. I didn’t notice that. Yeah, I suspect it’s a typo by Jane. Her previous “ask” responses appear to have been tagged “aoje asks”. And now it looks like this one has been fixed, too.

pbsthisdayinhistory:

June 27, 1880: Helen Keller is Born

On this day in 1880, Helen Keller was born in Tuscumbia, Alabama. Following a childhood illness, Helen Keller became blind, deaf, and mute. With the help of her teacher, Anne Sullivan, Keller made progress with her ability to communicate. She continued her education and went on to graduate from Radcliff College in 1904, becoming the first deaf-blind person to earn a Bachelors of Arts degree.

Despite her disability, Keller became an author, educator, activist, humanitarian, as well as a co-founder of the American Civil Liberties Union.

Wednesday, June 26th, 2013

“In its silence, a book is a challenge: it can’t lull you with surging music or deafen you with screeching laugh tracks or fire gunshots in your living room; you have to listen to it in your head. A book won’t move your eyes for you the way images on a screen do. It won’t move your mind unless you give it your mind, or your heart unless you put your heart in it … To read a story well is to follow it, to act it, to feel it, to become it — everything short of writing it, in fact. Reading is not interactive with a set of rules or options, as games are; reading is actual collaboration with the writer’s mind. No wonder not everyone is up to it.”

This Sandhill crane is busy reinforcing the grassy tuft upon which its two eggs sit near the Pinedale Field Office in Wyoming. Egg laying usually occurs during April and May when the cranes return from their wintering grounds in the southern U.S. and South America.

Sandhill cranes share parenting responsibilities, both helping to incubate the eggs and brood and feed the chicks.

What a beautiful bird. America is a great place.

As a child bird-watcher, it was interesting the way different birds engendered different emotions in me. Seeing (and hearing) these birds always inspired a sense of majesty, and awe. Still does.

“As seen in the immediate cessation of Steve’s deportation, the Supreme Court’s ruling has a profound impact on the LGBT community. Roughly 24,700 other binational same-sex couples can now breathe a sigh of relief, knowing that they will not be torn away from the people they love. For a population of about 267,000 LGBT undocumented individuals, the Supreme Court ruling comes as a future goal post to look forward to now that federal laws has ended the discrimination against their love. It also will finally allow the federal government to treat all LGBT families equally by allowing them access to federal benefits and protections.”

Crash (x)

AoJe: 5,000 subscribers (congratulations, btw)
LBD: 200,000 subscribers

They’re different things, at different points in their respective runs, and it’s not a competition.

Even so, I feel badly for the 195,000 Lizzie Bennet Diaries subscribers who are not (yet) subscribed to the Autobiography of Jane Eyre. Because they’re missing something wonderful.

eyrequotes:

My camera’s pretty old so I’m not surprised by the glitches. It always auto-focuses all over the place. There’s no way to fix it without replacing it – I checked.
And I honestly don’t mean to capture this stuff on film. And I definitely intend to stop… BUT SOMETHING IS GOING ON!
I’m so confused by everything in this video. And none of the theories I can come up with make any sense. I don’t know what to do.

(Also- my apologies if you’re squeamish.)

“In a stunning turn of events early today, Republican leaders in the Texas Senate conceded early…”

Wednesday, June 26th, 2013

In a stunning turn of events early today, Republican leaders in the Texas Senate conceded early today that hotly contested abortion legislation was not approved as they had earlier claimed.

The bill, expected to be debated all over again in another special legislative session, would ban abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy and require that all procedures take place in a surgical center. The bill that was a top priority for Republican legislative leaders, and experts estimate it could lead to the closing of 37 of the state’s 42 abortion clinics.

In a chaotic scene that captivated national attention, a filibuster by Sen. Wendy Davis, D-Fort Worth, designed to derail the abortion bill was itself thwarted a couple hours short of her midnight goal late Tuesday.

Her effort appeared initially to succeed anyway because Davis and her fellow Democrats were still able to gum up the works in the Texas Senate with parliamentary debate until the clock struck midnight. That’s when the 30-day special legislative session was supposed to end.

However, Republicans insist that they began a vote on the abortion bill just before midnight and it passed.

Democrats contend the vote was not final before midnight, and therefore should not be allowed to stand. They vowed a legal fight to overturn it.

Finally, around 3 a.m., senators emerged from a closed-door meeting to announce that Republican leaders agree the bill was not passed in accordance with Senate rules.

Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst explained briefly in a prepared statement that the bill will not be forwarded to the governor, who was prepared to sign it. “It’s been fun, but see you soon,” Dewhurst said.

“It’s been fun,” says the male Republican lieutenant governor about he and his GOP buddies fucking around with critically important women’s health issues.

Wednesday, June 26th, 2013

nprfreshair:

Yesterday Texas Senator Wendy Davis (D-Fort Worth) filibustered a Republican bill outlawing most abortions in the state long enough to help block the bill. That meant standing for nearly 11 hours. The clock ultimately ran out on the bill, the vote occurring after midnight as is constitutionally mandated in the state.
