I don’t think it’s impossible for us to get (even if it’s just) a little plot development on Lizzie’s Q&A video tomorrow. Gigi first asked Lizzie about the San Francisco tour with her and Darcy during the last Q&A video…

image

Actually getting pretty excited for tomorrow… :D

I WANT SOMEONE IN THE VID WITH LIZZIE WHOM WE HAVEN’T SEEN YET!

I believe the only choices at this point for an in-universe cast member who is both (a) human and (b) has not previously appeared with Lizzie in a Q&A video would be one of the following (arranged in order of my sense of their likelihood of appearing):

  • Bing
  • Mary
  • Maria
  • Darcy

I think we have a pretty good shot at Bing. If we don’t get him, though, I suspect it will be Lizzie-only.

Friday, February 22nd, 2013

nprfreshair:

Bradley Cooper talks to Terry Gross about the line between comedy and drama in the Oscar-nominated ‘Silver Linings Playbook’:

We never discussed the idea of whether it was going to be a comedic tone or a dramatic tone. It was all about being a real tone. … If you have two characters that have no filter and are going to have a discussion about the medicines that they take, chances are, comedy could, you know, be a byproduct. And that … occurred when Tiffany Maxwell and Pat Solitano have that discussion around the dining room table about Klonopin and trazodone and all of the various drugs that they take.

Image via NPR

According to Wynn / Encore, as reported today by the LA Times, current Best Picture betting odds in Vegas are:

“Argo” – 1 to 2

“Lincoln” – 9 to 5

“Les Misérables” – 30 to 1

“Silver Linings Playbook” – 35 to 1

“Zero Dark Thirty” – 40 to 1

“Amour” – 75 to 1

“Life of Pi” – 100 to 1

“Django Unchained” – 125 to 1

“Beasts of the Southern Wild” – 250 to 1

This year, for the first time in a while, I’ve seen most of them. (The only ones I still haven’t seen are Amour and Beasts of the Southern Wild, though I’m looking forward to seeing both.) And for me:

  • Argo was a good but not a great movie.
  • Lincoln was actually interesting and specific in a way that kind of undercuts its otherwise total Oscar-bait elements, such that I don’t think it should win either.
  • Les Mis was kind of thrilling, but not Best Picture thrilling.
  • Zero Dark Thirty was subtly but deeply problematic (again, speaking just for myself) in the choices it made about how to represent the role of torture.
  • Life of Pi was beautiful and thought-provoking and surprisingly good, but not Best Picture material.
  • Django Unchained was fun in parts, if ridiculous throughout, and reminded me that nope, I really have become someone who isn’t particularly impressed with Tarantino these days, or likely ever in the future.

We have an Oscar party every year, and we have a ballot, and I usually suck (though a few years ago I think I tied for first?). But there’s always that decision: Do I pick the one I really love, and want to win, so if it does I’ll be doubly happy? Or do I go cold and cynical and stick with the Vegas bookies, who, after all, are completely right about what kinds of movies normally do win?

I look at the odds this year and I can’t fault them; that’s totally the way those top four choices should be ranked — in terms of the Oscar voting process, and its historical tendency to reward and not reward certain kinds of movies, and how things have been playing out this awards season.

But this year I don’t care. There’s exactly one movie (out of the seven I’ve seen) that I felt motivated to see more than once, that has grown on me each time I’ve seen it, that I would watch again and enjoy right now, that I think has a pure heart, and a beautiful message, and performances and moments that elevate it to being worthy of the Best Picture Oscar.

It’s the one with that goofball in the photo above. And it’s the one I’m marking on my ballot on Sunday, dammit.

Q: What piece of advice would you give to Stephen Fry, aged 10.
A: You’re not alone. Everything you feel is fine. Only feel guilty about things you have done that are mean and cheap and unkind. Don’t feel guilty about what you feel, no matter what the world might think.
Everyone is scared inside, not just you. That’s why reading is so good. Keep doing it. Writers are people brave enough to make you feel better about being human because they’re not afraid to reveal their own frailties, weaknesses, desires, failures, and appetites.

ibmiller: eudaimonium: list of Jane Austen adaptations:↳ 08….

Friday, February 22nd, 2013

ibmiller:

eudaimonium:

list of Jane Austen adaptations:
↳ 08. Persuasion (1995)

This adaptation is so utterly gorgeous. Amanda Root is so powerful as Anne, and Ciaran Hinds is stellar as Wentworth.  And Roger Michell’s direction is imaginative and beautiful – much better at grasping “gritty” yet beautiful in a costume drama than Joe Wright, much as I admire Wright’s technical mastery of tracking shots and spatial isolation.

I loved this movie and had rewatched it at least 10 times before I ever read Austen’s book, though now the book is my favorite Austen. But really, what a wonderful adaptation.

Prejudicial confession:

Fast-forward a few years. When I first watched Notting Hill I liked it, but in a guilty-pleasure way. I told at least one person that the writing was wonderful (because I was and am a big fan of Richard Curtis), but that the direction was obviously the work of some ham-fisted director of music videos, and pointed to the scene in the private garden, and specifically the crane shot where William walks away from Anna then back toward her, as my proof.

“Look at it,” I scoffed. “There’s no reason whatsoever for him to walk away and back again like that, except that it matches the raise-and-lower of the camera to make an artful-looking shot. Which really just calls attention to itself and ends up looking really dumb. This director is clearly a clown.”

And time passed, and I found myself watching Notting Hill again, and again, and quite possibly again. And I still scoffed at that one crane shot, but my heart wasn’t in it, because actually, I’d come to love that movie.

And then I finally got around to taking a look at its IMDB page, and giving that ham-fisted director of music videos a closer look. What else had he done?

Oops.

Okay; yes, I’m an idiot, and no one should listen to my opinions about anything.

Pretty dresses at the Getty, first of three. From the Getty placard:

Portrait of Anne, Countess of Chesterfield (1777-1778)

Thomas Gainsborough (English, 1727-1788)

Oil on canvas

When this portrait of Anne Thistlewaite (1759-1798) was exhibited by Gainsborough in 1778, critics agreed that he had captured the sitter’s aristocratic refinement. While one contemporary observer found the hands and drapery to be unsubstantial and unfinished, others recognized that when the portrait is viewed from a distance, the loose brushwork coalesces into rich, luxurious textures and forms.

[me again]

Someone (*cough* Ian *cough*) asked what was up with all the art museum posts lately. It’s just… I’m like this. Sorry if it’s too much.

In the interest of hanging onto any followers I can, I’ve tried using the queue. So: Only one of these per day for the next few days. Or, well, only one queued one. The obsessive impulse could certainly strike again in the meantime. But I’ll try to queue them if I can. These things have been hanging around on a wall somewhere for hundreds of years; I should be able to wait a few days before posting them.

Should be.

cirqueimaginaire:

True story. I went to a Morrissey concert at MSG in the dark ages and I was sitting behind 80% of the B-52s because I had tickets from Warner Brothers (who owns Sire.)

Morrissey was wearing a sheer button down shirt, which he took off and threw into the crowd in front of the stage. It got ripped to shreds and there was practically a riot. People were showing other people their tiny shred of Morrissey shirt like they had a holy relic.

Which member of the B-52s was not present? Was this far enough back in the Dark Ages that Ricky was still alive?

Thursday, February 21st, 2013

I loved all the in-jokes and callouts to previous episodes in Something Lighter… Please. There was Bing having to stop himself from saying hi to Charlotte, Lizzie saying Jane was busy doing something “super important”, and of course snickerdoodles.

I also liked the callout to ep. 70 (New Jane) in Jane’s dress. That episode included a link to 8000Nerves for people who wanted to pay $123 for Jane’s blue dress. I don’t see a green or sleeveless version there, but the fabric pattern of today’s is so similar that I have to think the reference was intentional.

ehmeegee:

Tightness in my throat
What, now, is this strange feeling?
Everything is dead.

On Sunday morning
Too long without a scalpel
My heart is heavy
With the lack of brains to scoop
Monday brings the peace.

Softly, wind rustles.
Inhaling the winter air,
I dream of decomp.

We are all machines:
Thrusting biomechanics.
Existential mess.

Fishing brain matter
Out of the occipital,
Removing the soul.

Soft, pink, organic.
Everything that compels us
Is flushed down the sink.

Context.
