New species for the year list from going up to Ranger Peak:
* Yellow-billed Magpie – heard two while driving up on Happy Canyon Road. They’re basically a gimme, but I’ll take them.
* Mountain Chickadee – a number of them once I got to the pines.
* Brown Creeper – I love these. Stopped at a birdy spot just because I wanted to watch a flock of Dark-eyed Juncos being adorable, and there it was, creeping up the trunk of a live oak.
* Lewis’s Woodpecker – one had been reported from a particular spot along Figueroa Mountain Road a few days ago, so I thought I’d try. Saw the bird right where it was supposed to be, even before I parked. 😃
Next stop: Waller Park in Orcutt, where I can try to fend off all the toddlers feeding the Mallards in hopes of seeing Santa Barbara County’s rarest bird. 😬
Current count of new birds for the county year list: 6. Onward!

Armour Ranch Road has lots of neat birds, including the following species new for the county year list:
* Lark Bunting
* Golden Eagle (being chased by a Red-tailed Hawk, which was fun).
On to high-elevation conifers at Ranger Peak and Figueroa Mountain Road.

I’m heading out on my weekend birding extravaganza! Wish me luck!

One time my uncle drove all the way from Ontario to Texas(3082 km/1915 miles) to take a picture of a bird(grackle) and after he got the photographs he wanted he turned around and went straight back home.
…For a grackle?? Aren’t they fairly common? Like, wouldn’t you be able to find one closer to Ontario? Or is it a Very Special Birb?
I have no idea man. He’s kind of a weird dude.
I will assume that he took pictures of the Allgrackle, in which case driving all the way to Texas to snap some pics and then returning home would make perfect sense. :)
All I remember is the name grackle because it’s a really great word. 😊
I’m doing my own version of this this weekend. I’ve sort of fallen for the listing thing kind of hard, and need to visit the northern part of SB county so I can get some of those species I can’t get down here on the south coast for my county year list. Those Snow Geese at the Santa Maria River estuary aren’t going to see themselves…

White Crowned Sparrow showing off its beautiful understated self. Note to all my Michigan folks! These are easily seen in Michigan and if you are ever walking or looking out the window they are pretty easy to pick out as opposed to House Sparrow :) #birding #LasCrues #NewMexico with #tamron and canon (at Mesilla Valley Bosque State Park)
