im going to see animal collective tonight :-)

My son has tickets to a show later in the tour. He was telling me this morning that they’re apparently doing wildly different sets each night, which makes him both anxious and excited.

Have fun!

Critters you come across when working in the field. If anyone knows the species of this SoCal lizard, awesome!

If I saw it I’d think Western Fence Lizard.

“Have you seen my pipe? Oh wait–there–it’s right in my mouth.” -Constable Jim

We are ACTUALLY peeing ourselves with excitement to announce that Jim O’Heir–yes, Jim O’Heir–will be joining Edgar Allan Poe’s Murder Mystery Dinner Party as none other than Constable Jim, an original character.

You may know Jim as Jerry/Gary/Larry/Terry Gergich from Parks & Recreation. And if you don’t, what are you doing with your life?? Get thee to a Netflix!

Edgar Allan Poe’s Murder Mystery Dinner Party NOW ON KICKSTARTER!

Like…can you even? I can’t even. I thought I could even but I just can’t. Parks and recreation has been so very comforting to me over the years and I am absolutely honored that Jim agreed to take on this role.

@seanpersaud and I wrote this part specifically for him and it is crazy to see this poster now….

Thanks for all your support guys.

So apparently one of the people I follow has gotten replies back, and all I’m saying is, if they’re rolling out replies the way they did with chat (people who already have it can “infect” other people with it), well, here’s an original post. Infect me, please.

Haven’t heard anything about this, but if it’s true it’s great news. Keeping my eyes open…

icarus-suraki:

almostdefinitelydying:

icarus-suraki:

You know how you sometimes try to share something (a book, a movie, a song) you’re really, really into with someone else that you think will also be really, really into it and they…aren’t?

Like, they’re just sort of lukewarm on it at first and then they start straight up making fun of it? So it sort of sours you on this thing that you really, really fuckin’ liked?

Yeah. That’s where I am right now.

I’m sorry. It sucks.. It’s like “here, have a piece of my innermost soul” and then they laugh at it…

Hilariously (I guess?) the “thing” in question that I tried to share was Fury Road.

My folks kept saying, “Hey, Fury Road is up for all these awards. Is it really that good? Should we see it?” And I said, “I happen to have it on DVD and you happen to have a sizable television with a DVD player–let’s watch it sometime!”

So we did. And it didn’t work out as planned.

I had figured that, since they tend to like things like Star Wars, they would be able to deal with this, get into it, catch on to the nuances, understand some of the underlying ideas, and so on.

Instead, they kept walking in and out to get coffee or whatever, kept pausing it for one thing and another, didn’t laugh at the right parts, laughed at the wrong parts, nearly missed Doof Warrior’s flamethrowing guitar entrance, kept asking me who these people were or who those people were, didn’t think the storyline was “all that good,” didn’t pick up on the visual storytelling elements, actually talked over “Hope is a mistake” and then had to ask me what Max just said, thought the Vuvalini were “sort of unnecessary” and didn’t get why I like them so much, and (maybe worst of all) thought Furiosa’s anguished scream in the desert was “overly melodramatic.”

But, they said, we can see why it would be nominated for some technical stuff.

And I’m just like…are you actually being serious with me right now? I fucking love this movie. I don’t think you understand.

So I’m feeling a bit sour and salty right now.

I could totally see this happening. For me, it took some time to get into Fury Road. I mean, I _liked_ it fine when I first saw it (and my first viewing was in the theater, which I think was important), but I was mostly responding at first with: whoa! That was a fun ride! And it had some really cool elements that, the more I thought about them, seemed cooler and cooler.

And then because I’d seen it with my son but not with my wife, and she wanted to see it, too, I saw it in theaters a second time, and started to really fall in love with it, and then I fell down the rabbit hole with all my wonderful fellow obsessives, and we know where that ended up.

But it was a slow fuse at the beginning. I had a hard time really _seeing_ all the cool stuff because I wasn’t expecting it to be there. The movie’s almost deceptive in that way: it looks like a genre movie with stunts and explosions, and a lot of people (or at least people like me) have been conditioned to have low expectations of movies like that. And with the visual storytelling, you have to be paying attention to see it (or have obsessed online friends willing to point it out in loving detail).

In all honesty, too, especially at first when I wasn’t really processing all that was going on in terms of the deeper parts of the story, the scream in the desert kind of did seem overly melodramatic, and the Vuvalini did seem sort of underdeveloped. I don’t see them that way now, but I empathize with a first-time viewer who has that reaction.

Beginnings are delicate things. It can be hard when you love something and want to share it, just like it can be hard to be on the other side of that, when someone you care about who’s really excited to share something that you’re just not connecting with.

Maybe they’ll come around in time? But in the meantime, sorry you had to deal with that.

Catching up on our Tumblr inbox.

shipwreckedcomedy:

As it turns out, running a Kickstarter can get a little hectic. So we’re going to do some pre-spring cleaning of our Tumblr inbox and address some questions we’ve been getting about #poeparty.

image

This is true, although we’re not sure they wouldn’t try to kill each other after 4 hours in close proximity, and this isn’t Edgar Allan Poe’s Murder Mystery YouTube Livestream. But…. we shall see.

image

This is incredibly sweet and definitely something we needed to hear. The beauty of content on the internet is that it gives fans a sense of ownership, and we love all of you being involved every step of the way. So… thank you for that.

image

Although we wanted her to be involved, unfortunately Yulin was too busy to return to the fold for Mr. Poe’s big night.

image

Absolutely! @davidcater has been doing such an incredible job on our posters, we figured some of our fans might want to purchase more than one. With that in mind, we’ll be launching BackerKit very soon to help fulfill all of our perks. When the Kickstarter is over (provided we’re fully funded), you’ll get a survey to complete and an option to add on more of our character posters – plus a couple other goodies that will only be available to our backers.

image

We have a couple perks that involve physically being here in LA: one is an actual dinner party with available cast members, and the other is a visit to set during production. We are in the early stages of nailing down a shooting schedule, and right now, we’re looking at the end of April through May. Shooting will take a few weeks, so you will have a pretty big window of time to choose from. And of course, as soon as we know any specifics for sure, we will let you know.

We are so blown away by all the feedback we’ve been getting, and we’re excited to reveal all the stuff we still have in store for you. Thank you all so much, and spread the word!

How many times did you have to apply to BYU to get int?

Sunday, February 21st, 2016

Haaaaa ha haaaaaaaaa.

See, in highschool I decided art wasn’t a career–I was going to go into International Relations, learn three languages, and become an official translator for the UN and eventually be an ambassador.  Then the summer before college I worked at a stained glass studio and one of my co-workers was in the animation program at BYU.  He was all, “Megan, you never talk politics. Ever. You love movies.  Why don’t you go into animation?”

Problem–I didn’t take any art classes.  Ever. Instead I took a crap ton of AP courses to get super far ahead on my crazy 10 year plan to be a US ambassador. So I went to college and took my first Intro to Animation class.

I applied to the program in April of 2009.  I was turned down, but asked to apply again at the end of the summer. Apparently I showed promise? This was encouraging!

I applied in August of 2009. I was turned down again. Bummer. But I could apply one last time at the deadline next year! SO I retook figure drawing and joined the animation club to practice my skills.  I filled a full sketchbook for the first time in my life.

I applied in April of 2010. I was turned down A THIRD TIME but INVITED TO TRY AGAIN THAT SUMMER. Vividly remember very slowly, carefully tearing up that rejection letter into the tiniest pieces I could manage.  (you were only supposed to apply to the program twice. Here, on my THIRD TRY they were asking me to apply a FOURTH TIME. JUST LET ME IN ALREADY)

SO I re-retook figure drawing, audited classes from other teachers, retook intro to animation a third time from a different instructor, drew in all my classes (actually had a professor pull me aside and be like, ‘if you don’t respect my lectures enough to listen, why come to class’, and in my head I was all, “FORGET YOU MAN, I GOT A DREAM.” and just kept drawing)

And my FOURTH APPLICATION, two years after I started trying, in August of 2010 they BYU animation program finally accepted me.  My town threw me a fireworks show (ok, it was the Founding Days fireworks show, but I imagined they were all for me)
