Epiphany – We’ll be the victors

Imants Ziedonis (my translation from the Latvian original)

If we handle things safely, we’ll be the victors.

We’ll tie the elephant’s trunk to its tail. Only let’s not get nervous. We can strike out all the old names from the calendar, and add new ones. We’ll make the wolves into pets, and also the hedgehogs, the hares, and the buck deer. We’ll leave the forests with our brothers, the wild boars, and the woodpeckers will be our typesetters. We’ll grow moss in our hair – grey, green, and brown-fronded lichen. Hello, black blueberries, and red cranberries! Hello to all of you, with resin-drenched beards!

If we go barefoot over the pinecones, we’ll be the victors.

You’re a clever squirrel, you’re like a telegram flying between two tree-tops. You are restless and lively – you will be our banner. As we go forwards, squirrels will flutter over the forest, and, when we reach the forest edge, all the tree-tops will be swaying with squirrels.

We are not exaggerating at all. We truly are the most sound and healthy ones, and we will help our brethren who don’t live in the forest. We really are the strongest. Our muscles are brown as mushrooms, and heart runs fast and strong as the deer. When we die, our eyes turn to amber. Our mothers taught us to do good – not to anger, or envy, or hate. Our fathers taught us to get our fists into the the throat of the wolf, so its jaws can’t get us.

All who are tarrying, come, we will help you!
