Saturday, September 13th, 2014

Is it okay if I pretend these two goofballs are Lily and James? Because look: it’s James’s cassette-tape phone (which I realize is just Sean’s actual phone). And I know they’re going to be different characters and it will be fun and its own thing and all.

But just in the meantime.

On Day 3 of production on I Ship It | #WORTHIT

I really, really, really like the footage from Day 3. Sure, there were the usual logistical curveballs like FilmLA location fees + breaking in a brand new steadicam rig + trying to get a 1960’s vintage bike to set when all our crew cars were packed with gear and crafty and wardrobe. But when I look at our pretty pretty pretty footage from the day, that all somehow melts away and I can’t wait to crack into the edit. This is a short post because suddenly it’s 3:10am and crew call for Day 4 is in less than 6 hours what yay okay.

Massive props to our hardworking cast and crew for powering through a 12-hour day in 90+ degree weather and looking good doing it. Particular props go to Sean Persaud and Mary Kate Wiles, who are always a blast to direct separately and then somehow repeatedly manage to kick it to 11 whenever I work with them together. Also a huge thanks to Valerie Chiang (ninebagatelles on Tumblr and Instagram) and Chris Higgins for taking some gorgeous BTS stills today that will be going up here and on my Facebook Page soon (though realistically probably after we wrap. Sigh.)

Day 4 tomorrow is a bedroom interior – I’m pretty excited about it, not only because hey! No film permits required! But also because living space interiors are really a time for production design to shine, and we have some fun things planned in terms of PD for this film (Jen and I are playing around with our usual PD aesthetic in slightly different ways this time around).

Day 2 photo recap is postponed as the footage is currently with our editor and I didn’t get screencaps in time!

Much love,

I was already really excited about this but now, once again, I am reminded that California really looks a lot like home and even though this isn’t set in Australia it will probably feel a little like it is and that’s kind of nice.

A Better Way to Campaign:

If anyone who follows me is wondering where I’ve been lately, this is the answer.

Fun fact: Building a voter-outreach tool to support friend-to-friend campaigning is difficult but fun. Getting people to actually use it is just difficult.

nadimkobeissi:

Daniel Rehn (Tumblr) is a great guy who takes the time to salvage beautiful art from the computer age. Today he introduced me to these gems, all book covers or magazine art from two or three decades ago.

The last of those (The Complete HyperCard Handbook by Danny Goodman) is the book that helped me create what were arguably my first computer programs. Same beat-up cover and everything.

It’s 25 years later, and pretty much my entire professional career from that day to this can be traced back to that book. Seeing its cover again made me think about this passage:

“So Matilda’s strong young mind continued to grow, nurtured by the voices of all those authors who had sent their books out into the world like ships on the sea. These books gave Matilda a hopeful and comforting message: You are not alone.”

newyorker:

For the first time in more than a decade, the Metropolitan Museum’s seventeen van Gogh paintings are all on view at once. Peter Schjeldahl reflects on his visit:

“I wasn’t alone with them. You seldom are with van Goghs. Dozens of people were looking, while, in a neighboring room, one or two or no viewers at a time paused among twenty-two paintings by Cezanne.”

“Are we aestheticizing this loader? Are we aestheticizing the iconography of our persecutors?”

“Are we aestheticizing this loader? Are we aestheticizing the iconography of our persecutors?”

zsultan, on loading graphics (via sexpigeon)

The funny thing is that Tumblr views itself as persecuted. I’m on their side in this, and I think it’s important for reasons that go way beyond Tumblr.

But srsly. Guys. Or I guess in this case just one guy, and it sounds like he’s getting teased internally for the quote. But in the original context it came off as serious, at least in that moment.

Which again. Kind of hilarious.

AMAZING THING

Thursday, September 11th, 2014

flutish:

I was at my library doing some women in translation research-y things, and as I was leaving I decided to look at the booksale (rule #1: Always look at booksales). I flipped through the hardcovers, then the paperbacks, then the kids section… and then I got to the old books.

Now, usually “old” books in these sorts of sales are books from the 1930-50s – no dust jacket, hardcover, and pretty cool looking but otherwise worthless. This time I managed to snag a couple good choices: Nana by Zola and a book about biology from the 1920s (!!!). Then, my hand trailing over the old books about “Women’s Stories”, I saw a book covered in cardboard.

image

I was curious. Of course I was curious.

I pulled the book off the shelf and removed the cardboard. Inside was a very small, falling apart book. I opened it up – a novel by Washington Irving; interesting, but not amazing. I moved to close the book and the pages flipped aside to reveal the dedication on the inside cover.

An important confession: I love books with dedications. I love books with signatures. I love books with any sort of bookplate or stamp or mark of ownership. So, of course, I read it.

image

And then I realized I was holding in my hands a book that was dedicated in 1838. The publication date, I quickly checked, was 1835.

This beautiful little book cost $1. Excuse me while I dance with joy for the rest of the week.
