Dads are just people. I know from painful and repeated personal experience that they are totally fallible. They mean well. But they’re frequently idiots.

Also, dads aside, as a creator you should listen to your audience exactly as much — and exactly as little — as they deserve to be listened to. If some particular person doesn’t love something you created, fine; it wasn’t something that person loved, in that moment. Maybe that information will be helpful to you when you make your next creation. Or maybe it won’t. You get to decide.

Here I was about to correct you, based on the old-school pedantry that “actually, pandas are not bears.” But I was wrong! At least, the first google result for “are pandas bears?” asserts that giant pandas (which this appears to be the adorable baby fun-sized version of) are in fact (drumroll) bears! (Though lesser pandas, of the adorable gif I’ve seen at least 6 times in my Tumblr dash, are indeed more-closely related to raccoons. So chastened pedants can take comfort in that.)

Since genetic sequencing has allowed taxonomists to move beyond morphological similarities to assessing relatedness based on shared DNA, all kinds of comeuppances have been coming up.

So. There it is. What a time to be alive.

Heh. We’re going on a ride.

One of the more memorable voyages I took on my father’s Columbia 52 Victoria was through the streets of Los Angeles on the way from the boatyard in El Segundo to the launching in Marina del Rey. He was concerned that despite being given a special route, there might be low-hanging power lines that needed to be gingerly lifted up with notched 2×4’s so the boat could pass under them. He decided that he should make the trip on deck in case that became necessary.

At the last minute he consented to my request to join him in case flirting with electrocution required an extra set of hands. It turned out there were no power lines along the route that needed hoisting, but it was an exciting trip nevertheless.

I was 14.

Eleanor Louise Kresge, age 15

She was born on January 19, 1905. She earned a degree in primary education, married a Methodist minister, and had two children, both boys. Her older son had three children of his own, a girl and two boys, the youngest of whom grew up to spend too much time on Tumblr.

There was a Kresge Hall at Carnegie Mellon! Any chance of a Pittsburgh connection?

Yeah, that’s the same Kresge family. Sebastian Kresge, who founded the Kresge Corporation (think Kmart), donated a lot of money to various causes, and I think that theater at CMU probably was named for him.

Sebastian was born in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, and my grandmother was a semi-distant relative. She and my grandfather are buried not far from there in Mossville Cemetery.

They were married for 68 years.
